Surface rearrangement at complex adsorbate-substrate interfaces
On the basis of the information theory approach we propose a novel
statistical scheme for analyzing the evolution of coupled adsorbate-substrate
systems, in which the substrate undergoes the adsorbate-induced
transformations. A relation between the substrate morphology and the adsorbate
thermodynamic state is established. This allows one to estimate the surface
structure in terms of incomplete experimental information and the one
concerning the adsorbate thermodynamic response to the structural
modifications.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Selective adsorption from polymer mixtures on solid surfaces
Selective adsorption from binary polymer mixtures on a crystalline surface
is studied in terms of the lattice gas model in conjunction with the results
of the association theory. An interplay of the selectivity and the surface
induced segregation is shown to result in a variety of competing factors
which dominate the adsorption process. The role of the bead diameter,
chain length and the surface activity in the preferential adsorption of one
component is analyzed. A variation of the selectivity coefficient with the
density and composition is also discussed.

Modelling of the elementary surface processes occurring in the course of heterogeneous catalytic reactions
A short review of theoretical results on the Langmuir-Hinschelwood and
Eley-Rideal reaction schemes is presented. It is shown that the rates of elementary processes at the surface are coupled through the bulk properties
of adsorbing species. This concerns the dependence of the chemical potential on the association-dissociation balance and on the adsorbate density near the surface. Adsorption is shown to be sensitive to a mechanism
of dimer adsorption (associative or dissociative). Dissociative adsorption
gives a nonmonotonic behaviour of the coverage with the surface activity.
Simultaneously, the dissociation degree increases with increasing adsorption. The associative adsorption implies the existence of a low-density critical point around which the adsorption isotherms are discontinuous. This
causes an abnormal low surface diffusion at low densities. Implementation
of these results to kinetic properties are briefly discussed.
Clustering as a mechanism of enhanced adsorption
The role of adsorbate clustering in increasing the adsorption on crystalline
surfaces is analyzed in terms of the lattice gas model combined with the
results of the associative theory. The effect of the cluster size and architecture
in equilibrium and transport properties is studied. Some conjectures
related to HCl-ice interfaces are drawn. Adsorbate-induced distortion of solid surfaces. Application to HCl on ice at stratospheric conditions
It is shown that the adsorption of HCl molecules at the surface of ice increases,
if the HCl binding energy increases with the distortion amplitude
of the oxygen sites of ice. At the same time, the adsorption stimulates an increase
of the Lindemann parameter for the ice lattice, driving its melting at
temperatures (T = 190 K) relevant to the polar stratosphere. Similar effects
take place when the lateral interaction between HCl molecules becomes
more attractive due to the coupling through the ice lattice.
Lifetime distributions in the methods of non-equilibrium statistical operator and superstatistics
A family of non-equilibrium statistical operators is introduced which differ
by the system age distribution over which the quasi-equilibrium (relevant)
distribution is averaged. To describe the nonequilibrium states of a system we
introduce a new thermodynamic parameter - the lifetime of a system.
Superstatistics, introduced in works of Beck and Cohen [Physica A \textbf{322},
(2003), 267] as fluctuating quantities of intensive thermodynamical parameters,
are obtained from the statistical distribution of lifetime (random time to the
system degeneracy) considered as a thermodynamical parameter. It is suggested
to set the mixing distribution of the fluctuating parameter in the
superstatistics theory in the form of the piecewise continuous functions. The
distribution of lifetime in such systems has different form on the different
stages of evolution of the system. The account of the past stages of the
evolution of a system can have a substantial impact on the non-equilibrium
behaviour of the system in a present time moment.Comment: 18 page
On the origin of power-law distributions in systems with constrained phase space
Behavior of condensed matter systems deviating from the standard equilibrium conditions is discussed. Statistical properties of coupled dynamic-stochastic systems are studied within a combination of the maximum information principle and the superstatistical approach. The conditions at which the Shannon entropy functional leads to a power-law statistics are investigated. It is demonstrated that, from a quite general point of view, the power-law dependencies may appear as a consequence of "global" constraints restricting both the dynamic phase space and the stochastic fluctuations. As a result, at sufficiently long observation times the dynamic counterpart is driven into a non-equilibrium steady state whose deviation from the usual exponential statistics is given by the distance from the conventional equilibrium
