    Distribution of clay minerals in surface sediments from the eastern Barents and south-western Kara seas

    Surface samples from the eastern Barents and south-western Kara seas have been analysed for clay mineralogy. Transport paths, the role of regional sources and local bedrock outcrops and the influence of hydrodynamic and glacigenous processes for clay distribution on the shelves are discussed in relation to central Arctic Ocean deep sea and sea ice sediments. Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya show significantly different clay mineral associations. Although smectite concentrations are fairly high, Franz Josef Land can be excluded as a source for central Arctic sea ice sediments, which are relatively rich in smectite. In the Kara Sea, smectite concentrations in coastal sediments surpass even the Franz Josef Land concentrations. The large cyclonic gyre in the eastern Barents Sea between Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, which serves as a mixing zone between Arctic and North Atlantic water, is apparently reflected within the smectite distribution pattern. With the exception of Franz Josef Land, the area of investigation is typically low in kaolinite. In particular, coastal areas and areas north of Novaya Zemlya, influenced by the inflow of Arctic waters, show the lowest kaolinite concentrations. A high kaolinite occurrence within the Nansen Basin is most probably related to Franz Josef Land and emphasizes the importance of long-range downslope transport of sediments across the continental slope. The surface water circulation pattern in close interaction with local outcrops onshore Novaya Zemlya and locally restricted occurrences within the eastern Barents Sea significantly alter the illite dispersal pattern. Illite concentrations are lowest around Franz Josef Land. Chlorite is generally low in the area of investigation.     Inheritance of molecular markers and sex in the Australian freshwater crayfish, Cherax destructor Clark

    Inheritance of three kinds of molecular genetic markers (mtDNA, random-amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) and allozymes) and sex were investigated in crossbreeding experiments between three populations of the Australian freshwater crayfish Cherax destructor. Crossbreeding did not disrupt the ively maternally inherited, and allozyme and RAPD markers were transmitted following expected Mendelian principles for co-dominant and dominant traits respectively. Unlike these three markers, sex ratios were found to be distorted by crossbreeding in some families. Two crossbred families produced only females. The implications of these findings for freshwater crayfish population genetics, taxonomy and aquaculture are discussed.<br /

    Constant turnover of arachidonic acid and inhibition of a potassium current in Aplysia giant neurons

    Steady-state currents at hyperpolarized membrane potentials were studied in the homologous giant neurons, LP1 and R2, of Aplysia using two-electrode voltage clamp. Nearly half of the steady-state current at voltages more hyperpolarized than −70 mV had characteristics similar to the inwardly rectifying potassium current ( I R ) described previously in Aplysia neurons. The pharmacological agents 4-bromophenacylbromide, indomethacin, and the phorbol ester, 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate were found to modulate I R . I R was stimulated with BPB and indomethacin and inhibited with TPA. These agents altered I R by a mechanism independent of c AMP, which can also modulate I R . The effects of these modulators are consistent with their actions on arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism in Aplysia nervous system, suggesting AA may constitutively inhibit I R . When ganglia were perfused for 12 hr with medium containing BSA to absorb extracellular fatty acids, I R was increased nearly twofold. This increase was partially inhibited by addition of AA to the perfusion medium, and completely inhibited by pretreatment of ganglia with BPB.     The Ascendance of New York Fashion

    This article examines the evolution of New York City from a low-end, high-volume apparel manufacturing hub to an international fashion capital. Drawing on evolutionary economic theories of path-dependence, it argues that New York City's initial specialization in ready-to-wear apparel has shaped its subsequent development as a mass-market oriented industry. At the same time, however, it shows how key institutional actors were able to alter the industry's course of development at critical historical junctures by nurturing and promoting their own local design talent. As such, the article's investigation into New York's ascendance as an international fashion center challenges the dominant interpretation of path-dependence in regional development theory and practice. It contends that industries are not held captive to past choices and illustrates how an industry's origins can shape but not over-determine its economic development trajectory.
