    Conductance fluctuations and boundary conditions

    The conductance fluctuations for various types for two-- and three--dimensional disordered systems with hard wall and periodic boundary conditions are studied, all the way from the ballistic (metallic) regime to the localized regime. It is shown that the universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) depend on the boundary conditions. The same holds for the metal to insulator transition.     One-Dimensional Extended States in Partially Disordered Planar Systems

    We obtain analytically a continuum of one-dimensional ballistic extended states in a two-dimensional disordered system, which consists of compactly coupled random and pure square lattices. The extended states give a marginal metallic phase with finite conductivity σ0=2e2/h\sigma_{0}=2e^2/h in a wide energy range, whose boundaries define the mobility edges of a first-order metal-insulator transition. We show current-voltage duality, H/TH_{\parallel}/T scaling of the conductivity in parallel magnetic field HH_{\parallel} and non-Fermi liquid properties when long-range electron-electron interactions are included.Comment: 4 pages, revtex file, 3 postscript file

    Supporting Worth Mapping with Sentence Completion

    Expectations for design and evaluation approaches are set by the development practices within which they are used. Worth Centred Development (WCD) seeks to both shape and fit such practices. We report a study that combined two WCD approaches. Sentence completion gathered credible quantitative data on user values, which were used to identify relevant values and aversions of two player groups for an online gambling site. These values provided human value elements for a complementary WCD approach of worth mapping. Initial worth maps were extended in three workshops, which focused on outcomes and user experiences that could be better addressed in the current product and associated marketing materials. We describe how worth maps were prepared for, and presented in, workshops, and how product owners and associated business roles evaluated the combination of WCD approaches. Based on our experiences, we offer practical advice on this combinination

    Dietary iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production. Although U.S. dietary iodine is generally adequate, some groups, especially women of childbearing age, are at risk for mild iodine deficiency. Children's average urinary iodine is higher than that of adults. U.S. dietary iodine sources have not been assessed recently. A survey of iodine content in 20 brands of bread, 18 brands of cows' milk, and eight infant formulae was performed between 2001 and 2002. Three bread varieties contained more than 300 μg iodine per slice. Iodine content in other brands was far lower (mean ± SD, 10.1 ± 13.2 μg iodine/ slice). All cows' milk samples had at least 88 μg iodine/250 ml, ranging from 88-168 μg (116.0 ± 22.1 μg/250 ml). Infant formulae values ranged from 16.2 to 56.8 μg iodine/5 oz (23.5 ± 13.78 μg/5 oz). The public should be aware of the need for adequate dietary iodine intake and should be aware that ingredient lists do not reflect the iodine content of foods

    Change in fatty liver status and 5-year risk of incident metabolic syndrome: a retrospective cohort study

    INTRODUCTION: Fatty liver is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) but it may also occur without MetS. Whether resolution of fatty liver in the general population affects risk of MetS is unknown. Our aim was to determine whether a change in fatty liver status (either the development of new fatty liver or the resolution of existing fatty liver) would modify the risk of de novo MetS.METHODS:Two thousand eighty-nine people without hypertension, diabetes, and MetS were examined at baseline and at 5-year follow-up using a retrospective cohort study design. Fatty liver status was assessed at baseline and at follow-up by ultrasonography. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for de novo MetS at follow-up were calculated controlling for the potential confounders, compared to the reference group (people who never had fatty liver at baseline and follow-up).RESULTS:During follow-up, fatty liver developed in 251 people and fatty liver resolved in 112 people. After the adjustment for multiple confounders, persisting fatty liver and incident fatty liver development were associated with de novo MetS, with aHR of 2.60 (95 % CIs [1.61,4.20]) and 3.31 (95 % CIs [1.99,5.51]), respectively. Risk of new MetS in resolved fatty liver group was attenuated with insignificant aHR of 1.29 accompanying 95 % CIs of 0.60 and 2.80.DISCUSSION:Development or maintenance of fatty liver is positively associated with occurrence of new MetS. Resolution of fatty liver status has similar risk of de novo MetS with those who never had fatty liver. Therefore, cautious management is needed with those with fatty liver

    Analysis technique for exceptional points in open quantum systems and QPT analogy for the appearance of irreversibility

    We propose an analysis technique for the exceptional points (EPs) occurring in the discrete spectrum of open quantum systems (OQS), using a semi-infinite chain coupled to an endpoint impurity as a prototype. We outline our method to locate the EPs in OQS, further obtaining an eigenvalue expansion in the vicinity of the EPs that gives rise to characteristic exponents. We also report the precise number of EPs occurring in an OQS with a continuum described by a quadratic dispersion curve. In particular, the number of EPs occurring in a bare discrete Hamiltonian of dimension nDn_\textrm{D} is given by nD(nD1)n_\textrm{D} (n_\textrm{D} - 1); if this discrete Hamiltonian is then coupled to continuum (or continua) to form an OQS, the interaction with the continuum generally produces an enlarged discrete solution space that includes a greater number of EPs, specifically 2nC(nC+nD)[2nC(nC+nD)1]2^{n_\textrm{C}} (n_\textrm{C} + n_\textrm{D}) [2^{n_\textrm{C}} (n_\textrm{C} + n_\textrm{D}) - 1] , in which nCn_\textrm{C} is the number of (non-degenerate) continua to which the discrete sector is attached. Finally, we offer a heuristic quantum phase transition analogy for the emergence of the resonance (giving rise to irreversibility via exponential decay) in which the decay width plays the role of the order parameter; the associated critical exponent is then determined by the above eigenvalue expansion.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Magnetotransport in inhomogeneous magnetic fields

    Quantum transport in inhomogeneous magnetic fields is investigated numerically in two-dimensional systems using the equation of motion method. In particular, the diffusion of electrons in random magnetic fields in the presence of additional weak uniform magnetic fields is examined. It is found that the conductivity is strongly suppressed by the additional uniform magnetic field and saturates when the uniform magnetic field becomes on the order of the fluctuation of the random magnetic field. The value of the conductivity at this saturation is found to be insensitive to the magnitude of the fluctuation of the random field. The effect of random potential on the magnetoconductance is also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    The formation and evolution of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries during and after galaxy mergers is an important ingredient for our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution in a cosmological context, e.g. for predictions of cosmic star formation histories or of SMBH demographics (to predict events that emit gravitational waves). If galaxies merge in the course of their evolution, there should be either many binary or even multiple black holes, or we have to find out what happens to black hole multiples in galactic nuclei, e.g. whether they come sufficiently close to merge resulting from emission of gravitational waves, or whether they eject each other in gravitational slingshot interactions

    Holstein model in infinite dimensions at half-filling

    The normal state of the Holstein model is studied at half-filling in infinite dimensions and in the adiabatic regime. The dynamical mean-field equations are solved using perturbation expansions around the extremal paths of the effective action for the atoms. We find that the Migdal-Eliashberg expansion breaks down in the metallic state if the electron-phonon coupling λ\lambda exceeds a value of about 1.3 in spite of the fact that the formal expansion parameter λω0/EF\lambda \omega_0/E_F (ω0\omega_0 is the phonon frequency, EFE_F the Fermi energy) is much smaller than 1. The breakdown is due to the appearance of more than one extremal path of the action. We present numerical results which illustrate in detail the evolution of the local Green's function, the self-energy and the effective atomic potential as a function of λ\lambda.Comment: Revtex + 17 postscript figures include

    Full Counting Statistics of Multiple Andreev Reflections in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions

    We present a theory for the full distribution of current fluctuations in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions, subjected to a voltage bias. This theory of full counting statistics of incoherent multiple Andreev reflections is valid for arbitrary applied voltage. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the first four cumulants as well as the low and high voltage regimes of the full counting statistics.
