    The impact of QCD plasma instabilities on bottom-up thermalization

    QCD plasma instabilities, caused by an anisotropic momentum distributions of the particles in the plasma, are likely to play an important role in thermalization in heavy ion collisions. We consider plasmas with two different components of particles, one strongly anisotropic and one isotropic or nearly isotropic. The isotropic component does not eliminate instabilities but it decreases their growth rates. We investigate the impact of plasma instabilities on the first stage of the ``bottom-up'' thermalization scenario in which such a two-component plasma emerges, and find that even in the case of non-abelian saturation instabilities qualitatively change the bottom-up picture.Comment: 12 pages, latex, one typo corrected, several minor changes in the abstract and the text, to appear in JHE

    Results are presented of a full leading-order evaluation of the shear viscosity, flavor diffusion constants, and electrical conductivity in high temperature QCD and QED. The presence of Coulomb logarithms associated with gauge interactions imply that the leading-order results for transport coefficients may themselves be expanded in an infinite series in powers of 1/log(1/g); the utility of this expansion is also examined. A next-to-leading-log approximation is found to approximate the full leading-order result quite well as long as the Debye mass is less than the temperature.Comment: 38 pages, 6 figure

    Intoxication with therapeutic and illicit drug substances and hospital admission to a Dutch university hospital

    BACKGROUND: This article describes the retrospective analysis of the patients who presented with a drug-related intoxication to the emergency department of the Erasmus Medical Centre in 2000. METHODS: Data were collected from the emergency department's electronic database and the medical charts of the patients. RESULTS: A total of 243 patients were seen with a drug-related intoxication caused by ingestion of one or more medical substances, drugs of abuse (DOA) or combinations with alcohol. Mono-intoxication occurred in 58% of the patients, predominantly caused by DOA (56 patients), analgesics (17 patients) or benzodiazepines (14 patients). Benzodiazepines (55 patients), analgesics (42 patients), alcohol (42 patients), DOA (40 patients) and antidepressants (23 patients) were predominant in combined intoxications. More than half of the patients (142) were discharged after being treated in the emergency department and 80 patients were admitted to the wards.     Gravitational couplings of charged leptons in a medium

    We calculate the leading order matter-induced corrections to the gravitational interactions of charged leptons and their antiparticles in a medium that contains electrons but not the other charged leptons, such as normal matter. The gravitational coupling, which is universal at the tree level, is found to be flavor-dependent, and also different for the corresponding antiparticles, when the corrections of O(α)O(\alpha) are taken into account. General expressions are obtained for the matter-induced corrections to the gravitational mass in a generic matter background, and explicit formulas for those corrections are given in terms of the macroscopic parameters of the medium for particular conditions of the background gases.Comment: Latex, axodraw, 39 pages.     AbstractWe present a case of adult Pompe disease (acid maltase deficiency) with an uncommon clinical presentation characterized by severe fatigue and myalgia prior to the onset of limb girdle weakness. Remarkably, the muscle biopsy demonstrated selective involvement of type 1 muscle fibers. The cause and clinical effects of fiber type specific involvement are currently unknown, but the phenomenon might contribute to the clinical heterogeneity in Pompe disease and the variable response to enzyme replacement therapy

    Geodesic distance for right invariant Sobolev metrics of fractional order on the diffeomorphism group

    We study Sobolev-type metrics of fractional order s0s\geq0 on the group \Diff_c(M) of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a manifold MM. We show that for the important special case M=S1M=S^1 the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(S^1) vanishes if and only if s12s\leq\frac12. For other manifolds we obtain a partial characterization: the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(M) vanishes for M=R×N,s<12M=\R\times N, s<\frac12 and for M=S1×N,s12M=S^1\times N, s\leq\frac12, with NN being a compact Riemannian manifold. On the other hand the geodesic distance on \Diff_c(M) is positive for dim(M)=1,s>12\dim(M)=1, s>\frac12 and dim(M)2,s1\dim(M)\geq2, s\geq1. For M=RnM=\R^n we discuss the geodesic equations for these metrics. For n=1n=1 we obtain some well known PDEs of hydrodynamics: Burgers' equation for s=0s=0, the modified Constantin-Lax-Majda equation for s=12s=\frac 12 and the Camassa-Holm equation for s=1s=1.Comment: 16 pages.     Proactive vitality management in the work context

    In the present research, we use proactivity literature and studies on energy at work to argue that individuals may proactively manage their vitality (i.e., physical and mental energy) to promote optimal functioning at work. We develop and validate a scale to measure proactive vitality management (PVM), and explore the nomological network. We conducted a five-day diary study (N = 133; 521 days), a survey study (N = 813) and a cross-sectional study measuring daily PVM (N = 246) among working individuals from various occupational sectors. The results show that PVM can be reliably measured with eight items that load on one overall factor, both on general and daily level. Furthermore, daily PVM was moderately but positively related to the use of work-related strategies and micro-breaks. Moreover, PVM related positively to relevant personal characteristics (i.e., proactive personality and self-insight) and showed moderate but positive relationships with job crafting and relaxation (convergent validity). PVM was unrelated to psychological detachment and decreasing hindering demands (discriminant validity). Finally, PVM was positively related to well-being, in-role work performance, creative work performance and performance on the Remote Associates Test (criterion validity). We conclude that employees may promote their own work performance through the use of PVM
