    Multimessenger astronomy with the Einstein Telescope

    Gravitational waves (GWs) are expected to play a crucial role in the development of multimessenger astrophysics. The combination of GW observations with other astrophysical triggers, such as from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites, optical/radio telescopes, and neutrino detectors allows us to decipher science that would otherwise be inaccessible. In this paper, we provide a broad review from the multimessenger perspective of the science reach offered by the third generation interferometric GW detectors and by the Einstein Telescope (ET) in particular.     Modeling gravitational radiation from coalescing binary black holes

    With the goal of bringing theory, particularly numerical relativity, to bear on an astrophysical problem of critical interest to gravitational wave observers we introduce a model for coalescence radiation from binary black hole systems. We build our model using the "Lazarus approach", a technique that bridges far and close limit approaches with full numerical relativity to solve Einstein equations applied in the truly nonlinear dynamical regime. We specifically study the post-orbital radiation from a system of equal-mass non-spinning black holes, deriving waveforms which indicate strongly circularly polarized radiation of roughly 3% of the system's total energy and 12% of its total angular momentum in just a few cycles. Supporting this result we first establish the reliability of the late-time part of our model, including the numerical relativity and close-limit components, with a thorough study of waveforms from a sequence of black hole configurations varying from previously treated head-on collisions to representative target for ``ISCO'' data corresponding to the end of the inspiral period. We then complete our model with a simple treatment for the early part of the spacetime based on a standard family of initial data for binary black holes in circular orbit. A detailed analysis shows strong robustness in the results as the initial separation of the black holes is increased from 5.0 to 7.8M supporting our waveforms as a suitable basic description of the astrophysical radiation from this system. Finally, a simple fitting of the plunge waveforms is introduced as a first attempt to facilitate the task of analyzing data from gravitational wave detectors.Comment: 23 pages, 36 figures, RevTeX

    Whole body protein metabolism and resting energy expenditure (REE) were measured at 11, 23, and 33 wk of pregnancy in nine pregnant (not malnourished) Gambian women and in eight matched nonpregnant nonlactating (NPNL) matched controls. Rates of whole body nitrogen flux, protein synthesis, and protein breakdown were determined in the fed state from the level of isotope enrichment of urinary urea and ammonia during a period of 9 h after a single oral dose of [15N]glycine. At regular intervals, REE was measured by indirect calorimetry (hood system). Based on the arithmetic end-product average of values obtained with urea and ammonia, a significant increase in whole body protein synthesis was observed during the second trimester (5.8 +/- 0.4 g.kg-1.day-1) relative to values obtained both for the NPNL controls (4.5 +/- 0.3 g.kg-1.day-1) and those during the first trimester (4.7 +/- 0.3 g.kg-1.day-1). There was a significant rise in REE during the third trimester both in the preprandial and postprandial states. No correlation was found between REE after meal ingestion and the rate of whole body protein synthesis

    Thirty-two dried milk preparations, designed for infant feeding and obtained from 7 European countries, have been analysed for nitrogen, carbohydrate, fat, the distribution of fatty acids in the fat, and 8 inorganic constituents. The composition of the milks differed considerably. Some were full-cream dried milks. Many had carbohydrate added in the form of lactose, sucrose, or dextrimaltose. Some were `half-cream', others had had all the milk fat removed and replaced by a mixture of animal and vegetable fats or, in one instance, by maize oil alone. The fatty acid composition of these milks varied considerably, and linoleic acid accounted for up to 58% of the total fat in one as compared with 9% of the fat in human milk and 1 to 2% of that in cow's milk. All the milks contained considerably more calcium and phosphorus per 100 g solids than human milk, some of them four times as much. Some milks had had an iron salt added during manufacture, and a few contained added copper
