    Atmospheric cloud physics laboratory project study

    Engineering studies were performed for the Zero-G Cloud Physics Experiment liquid cooling and air pressure control systems. A total of four concepts for the liquid cooling system was evaluated, two of which were found to closely approach the systems requirements. Thermal insulation requirements, system hardware, and control sensor locations were established. The reservoir sizes and initial temperatures were defined as well as system power requirements. In the study of the pressure control system, fluid analyses by the Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory were performed to determine flow characteristics of various orifice sizes, vacuum pump adequacy, and control systems performance. System parameters predicted in these analyses as a function of time include the following for various orifice sizes: (1) chamber and vacuum pump mass flow rates, (2) the number of valve openings or closures, (3) the maximum cloud chamber pressure deviation from the allowable, and (4) cloud chamber and accumulator pressure

    Over the past thirty-five years, the U.S. adult obesity rate has more than doubled from roughly 15% to 35%, reflecting a general diffusion of obesity across all segments of the adult population (USDHHS). Obesity is a concern because it increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and most forms of cancer, except for lung. Earlier studies of obesity of U.S. adults have largely focused on data in a single cross-section or one round of a panel survey. Chen and Huffman (2010) show that food and drink prices significantly affect U.S. women’s probability of being obese but not for men. However, the impact of individual food and drink prices are not always as expected

    The information that a pattern of firing in the output layer of a feedforward network of threshold-linear neurons conveys about the network's inputs is considered. A replica-symmetric solution is found to be stable for all but small amounts of noise. The region of instability depends on the contribution of the threshold and the sparseness: for distributed pattern distributions, the unstable region extends to higher noise variances than for very sparse distributions, for which it is almost nonexistant.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures.     Maximally symmetric stabilizer MUBs in even prime-power dimensions

    One way to construct a maximal set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in a prime-power dimensional Hilbert space is by means of finite phase-space methods. MUBs obtained in this way are covariant with respect to some subgroup of the group of all affine symplectic phase-space transformations. However, this construction is not canonical: as a consequence, many different choices of covariance sugroups are possible. In particular, when the Hilbert space is 2n2^n dimensional, it is known that covariance with respect to the full group of affine symplectic phase-space transformations can never be achieved. Here we show that in this case there exist two essentially different choices of maximal subgroups admitting covariant MUBs. For both of them, we explicitly construct a family of 2n2^n covariant MUBs. We thus prove that, contrary to the odd dimensional case, maximally covariant MUBs are very far from being unique.Comment: 22 page

    Fabrication of Miniaturized Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices (MicroPADs)

    Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (microPADs) are emerging as cost-effective and portable platforms for point-of-care assays. A fundamental limitation of microPAD fabrication is the imprecise nature of most methods for patterning paper. The present work demonstrates that paper patterned via wax printing can be miniaturized by treating it with periodate to produce higher-resolution, high-fidelity microPADs. The optimal miniaturization parameters were determined by immersing microPADs in various concentrations of aqueous sodium periodate (NaIO4) for varying lengths of time. This treatment miniaturized microPADs by up to 80% in surface area, depending on the concentration of periodate and length of the reaction time. By immersing microPADs in 0.5-M NaIO4 for 48 hours, devices were miniaturized by 78% in surface area, and this treatment allowed for the fabrication of functional channels with widths as small as 301 µm and hydrophobic barriers with widths as small as 387 µm. The miniaturized devices were shown to be compatible with redox-based colorimetric assays and enzymatic reactions. This miniaturization technique provides a new option for fabricating sub-millimeter-sized features in paper-based fluidic devices without requiring specialized equipment and could enable new capabilities and applications for microPADs

    Interacting Electrons on a Square Fermi Surface

    Electronic states near a square Fermi surface are mapped onto quantum chains. Using boson-fermion duality on the chains, the bosonic part of the interaction is isolated and diagonalized. These interactions destroy Fermi liquid behavior. Non-boson interactions are also generated by this mapping, and give rise to a new perturbation theory about the boson problem. A case with strong repulsions between parallel faces is studied and solved. There is spin-charge separation and the square Fermi surface remains square under doping. At half-filling, there is a charge gap and insulating behavior together with gapless spin excitations. This mapping appears to be a general tool for understanding the properties of interacting electrons on a square Fermi surface.Comment: 25 pages, Nordita preprint 94/22
