    Quantum Hall line junction with impurities as a multi-slit Luttinger liquid interferometer

    We report on quantum interference between a pair of counterpropagating quantum Hall edge states that are separated by a high quality tunnel barrier. Observed Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are analyzed in terms of resonant tunneling between coupled Luttinger liquids that creates bound electronic states between pairs of tunnel centers that act like interference slits. We place a lower bound in the range of 20-40 μ\mum for the phase coherence length and directly confirm the extended phase coherence of quantum Hall edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    White-light and hard X-ray (HXR) observations of two white-light flares (WLFs) show that if the radiative losses in the optical continuum are powered by fast electrons directly heating the WLF source, then the column density constraints imposed by the finite range of the electrons requires that the WLF consist of an over-dense region in the chromosphere, with density exceeding 10 to the 14th power/cu cm. Thus, we recommend that P/OF search for evidences of over-dense structures in HXR images obtained simultaneously with optical observations of flares

    Soft-spectrum gamma-ray bursts

    A typical gamma to ray burst (GRB), when observed over the approximately 30 keV to 1 MeV range, has a 1 to 10 s duration and a spectrum describable in terms of a several-hundred-keV exponential function. However, KONUS data indicate that some GRBs may belong to a separate class of short (approximately 0.1 s), soft (kT 50 keV) events. This result has been questioned because the KONUS experiments, with only 4 s spectral time resolution and a lack of information approximately 30 keV, are not particularly well suited for the detection and study of these bursts. The UC Berkely/Los Alamos Solar X-Ray Spectrometer/GRB experiment on the International Cometry Explorer (ICE), with nearly continuous coverage of approxiomately one-sixth of the sky down to 5 keV at 0.5 s resolution, is better designed for such a task. Using ICE data, it was confirmed that soft-spectrum events do indeed exist, apparently with properties that set them apart from the general GRB population.     Integer quantum Hall effect on a six valley hydrogen-passivated silicon (111) surface

    We report magneto-transport studies of a two-dimensional electron system formed in an inversion layer at the interface between a hydrogen-passivated Si(111) surface and vacuum. Measurements in the integer quantum Hall regime demonstrate the expected sixfold valley degeneracy for these surfaces is broken, resulting in an unequal occupation of the six valleys and anisotropy in the resistance. We hypothesize the misorientation of Si surface breaks the valley states into three unequally spaced pairs, but the observation of odd filling factors, is difficult to reconcile with non-interacting electron theory.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter

    Properties of 1D transport strongly depend on the proper choice of boundary conditions. It has been frequently stated that the Luttinger Liquid (LL) conductance is renormalized by the interaction as ge2hg \frac{e^2} {h} . To contest this result I develop a model of 1D LL wire with the interaction switching off at the infinities. Its solution shows that there is no renormalization of the universal conductance while the electrons have a free behavior in the source and drain reservoirs.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex 2.0, attempted repair of tex error

    Spin-filter effect of the europium chalcogenides: An exactly solved many-body model

    A model Hamiltonian is introduced which considers the main features of the experimental spin filter situation as s-f interaction, planar geometry and the strong external electric field. The proposed many-body model can be solved analytically and exactly using Green functions. The spin polarization of the field-emitted electrons is expressed in terms of spin-flip probabilities, which on their part are put down to the exactly known dynamic quantities of the system. The calculated electron spin polarization shows remarkable dependencies on the electron velocity perpendicular to the emitting plane and the strength of s-f coupling. Experimentally observed polarization values of about 90% are well understood within the framework of the proposed model.Comment: accepted (Physical Review B); 10 pages, 11 figures; http://orion.physik.hu-berlin.de
