    FRANTIC 5 (a version of FRANTIC II) : a computer code for evaluating system aging effect

    "November 1986."Includes bibliographical referencesThe FRANTIC 5 code is a modification of the FRANTIC II code for time dependent unavailability analysis. FRANTIC 5 is specially adapted for modeling the aging effects on system and component performance. The FRANTIC 5 code uses the linear aging model, i.e., based on the assumption that component failure rates increase linearly in time. The constant failure rate and the aging acceleration rate for a component can be changed during the plant life, which allows the creation of different time scales for components as a function of the replacement or any significant maintenance or repair action on the component. FRANTIC 5 preserves most of the unique features of FRANTIC II, for example the modeling of periodic testing. The output from FRANTIC 5 consists of the system mean unavailabilities, tables of the system unavailabilities at designated time points and the system mean unavailabilities between consecutive tests. The code is applied for evaluation of aging effects of the Auxiliary Feedwater System of Arkansas Nuclear Unit 1. The usefulness of the method will depend upon the availability of the component aging data needed to develop the model parameters.Prepared for EG&G Idaho, Inc. special research subcontract no.     NAT Gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease: identification of a novel NAT1 allelic variant

    BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is multifactorial, having environmental, toxicological and genetic risk factors. Impaired folate and homocysteine metabolism has been hypothesised to increase risk. In addition to its xenobiotic-metabolising capacity, human arylamine N-acetyltransferase type-1 (NAT1) acetylates the folate catabolite para-aminobenzoylglutamate and is implicated in folate metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine whether polymorphisms in the human NAT genes influence susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: Elderly individuals with and without Alzheimer's disease were genotyped at the polymorphic NAT1 (147 cases; 111 controls) and NAT2 (45 cases; 63 controls) loci by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism, and the genotype and allele frequencies were compared using the chi-squared test. RESULTS: Although a trend towards fast NAT2 acetylator-associated Alzheimer's disease susceptibility was indicated and the NAT1*10/1*10 genotype was observed only in cases of Alzheimer's disease (6/147, 4.1%), no significant difference in the frequency of NAT2 (p = 0.835) or NAT1 (p = 0.371) genotypes was observed between cases and controls. In addition, a novel NAT1 variant, NAT1*11B, was identified. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that genetic polymorphisms in NAT1 and NAT2 do not influence susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease, although the increase in frequency of the NAT1*10 allele in Alzheimer's disease is worthy of further investigation.     In the article the situation and trends in the development of dissertations in pedagogy have being analyzed, positive trends and reasons for the low quality of individual dissertations is indicated. The authors focus on methodological “omissions” that reduce the scientific value of dissertations. Authors include to that the construction by dissertators of key theoretical and methodological premises of the study – a research question, a hypothesis, a concept, novelty, a model of the process under study, an experimental substantiation of the conclusions, which reflect the “deficiencies” of the methodological culture of authors, the specifics of pedagogical research are not taken into account. The authors try to explain why these “conclusions” often cause mistrust among practicing teachers. Constructive recommendations for conducting a dissertation research are also made in the article

    Hypertension during Pregnancy is Associated with Coronary Artery Calcium Independent of Renal Function

    Abstract Background: Hypertension during pregnancy (HDP) increases the risk of future coronary heart disease (CHD), but it is unknown whether this association is mediated by renal injury. Reduced renal function is both a complication of HDP and a risk factor for CHD. Methods: Logistic regression models were fit to examine the association between a history of HDP and the presence and extent of coronary artery calcification (CAC), a measure of subclinical coronary artery atherosclerosis, in 498 women from the Epidemiology of Coronary Artery Calcification Study (mean age 63.3+/-9.3 years). Results: Fifty-two (10.4%) women reported a history of HDP. After adjusting for age at time of study participation, HDP was associated with increased serum creatinine later in life (p=0.014). HDP was positively associated with the presence of CAC after adjusting for age at time of study participation (OR=2.7, 95% CI 1.4-5.4). This association was slightly attenuated with adjustment for body size and blood pressure (OR=2.4, 95% CI 1.2-4.9) but was not further attenuated with adjustment for serum creatinine and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (OR=2.6, 95% CI 1.3-5.3). Results were similar for CAC extent. Conclusions: HDP may increase a woman's risk of future CHD beyond traditional risk factors and renal function.     Variations on the Deuteron

    We consider few problems which are related to the deuteron and have simple analytical solution. Relation is found between the deuteron electric quadrupole moment and the npnp-scattering amplitude. The degree of circular polarization of photons is calculated for the radiative capture of longitudinally polarized thermal neutrons. The anapole, electric dipole and magnetic quadrupole moments of the deuteron are calculated.Comment: 14 pages, late
