Resonance regimes of scattering by small bodies with impedance boundary conditions
The paper concerns scattering of plane waves by a bounded obstacle with
complex valued impedance boundary conditions. We study the spectrum of the
Neumann-to-Dirichlet operator for small wave numbers and long wave asymptotic
behavior of the solutions of the scattering problem. The study includes the
case when is an eigenvalue or a resonance. The transformation from the
impedance to the Dirichlet boundary condition as impedance grows is described.
A relation between poles and zeroes of the scattering matrix in the non-self
adjoint case is established. The results are applied to a problem of scattering
by an obstacle with a springy coating. The paper describes the dependence of
the impedance on the properties of the material, that is on forces due to the
deviation of the boundary of the obstacle from the equilibrium position
Sharp weyl law for signed counting function of positive interior transmission eigenvalues
We consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem that arises when scattering by inhomogeneous media is studied. The ITE problem is not self-adjoint. We show that positive ITEs are observable together with plus or minus signs that are defined by the direction of motion of the corresponding eigenvalues of the scattering matrix (as they approach ). We obtain a Weyl-type formula for the counting function of positive ITEs, which are taken together with the ascribed signs. The results are applicable to the case when the medium contains an unpenetrable obstacle
Localized basis sets for unbound electrons in nanoelectronics
It is shown how unbound electron wave functions can be expanded in a suitably
chosen localized basis sets for any desired range of energies. In particular,
we focus on the use of gaussian basis sets, commonly used in first-principles
codes. The possible usefulness of these basis sets in a first-principles
description of field emission or scanning tunneling microscopy at large bias is
illustrated by studying a simpler related phenomenon: The lifetime of an
electron in a H atom subjected to a strong electric field.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by J. Chem. Phys. (http://jcp.aip.org/
Bounds on positive interior transmission eigenvalues
The paper contains lower bounds on the counting function of the positive
eigenvalues of the interior transmission problem when the latter is elliptic.
In particular, these bounds justify the existence of an infinite set of
interior transmission eigenvalues and provide asymptotic estimates from above
on the counting function for the large values of the wave number. They also
lead to certain important upper estimates on the first few interior
transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as
well as the case when the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle.Comment: We corrected inaccuracies cost by the wrong sign in the Green formula
(17). In particular, the sign in the definition of \sigma was change
Weyl Type Bound on Positive Interior Transmission Eigenvalues
This paper contains a lower bound of the Weyl type on the counting function of the positive eigenvalues of the interior transmission eigenvalue problem which justifies the existence of an infinite set of positive interior transmission eigenvalues. We consider the classical transmission problem as well as the case where the inhomogeneous medium contains an obstacle. One of the essential components of the proof is an estimate for the D-t-N operator for the Helmholtz equation for positive λ that replaces the standard parameter-elliptic estimate valid outside of the positive semi-axis
Uniqueness in the Inverse Conductivity Problem for Complex-Valued Lipschitz Conductivities in the Plane
We consider the inverse impedance tomography problem in the plane. Using Bukhgeim's scattering data for the Dirac problem, we prove that the conductivity is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neuman map.

Time reversal in thermoacoustic tomography - an error estimate
The time reversal method in thermoacoustic tomography is used for
approximating the initial pressure inside a biological object using
measurements of the pressure wave made on a surface surrounding the object.
This article presents error estimates for the time reversal method in the cases
of variable, non-trapping sound speeds.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, expanded "Remarks and Conclusions" section,

Non-uniqueness in conformal formulations of the Einstein constraints
Standard methods in non-linear analysis are used to show that there exists a
parabolic branching of solutions of the Lichnerowicz-York equation with an
unscaled source. We also apply these methods to the extended conformal thin
sandwich formulation and show that if the linearised system develops a kernel
solution for sufficiently large initial data then we obtain parabolic solution
curves for the conformal factor, lapse and shift identical to those found
numerically by Pfeiffer and York. The implications of these results for
constrained evolutions are discussed.Comment: Arguments clarified and typos corrected. Matches published versio
On completeness of description of an equilibrium canonical ensemble by reduced s-particle distribution function
In this article it is shown that in a classical equilibrium canonical
ensemble of molecules with -body interaction full Gibbs distribution can be
uniquely expressed in terms of a reduced s-particle distribution function. This
means that whenever a number of particles and a volume are fixed the
reduced -particle distribution function contains as much information about
the equilibrium system as the whole canonical Gibbs distribution. The latter is
represented as an absolutely convergent power series relative to the reduced
-particle distribution function. As an example a linear term of this
expansion is calculated. It is also shown that reduced distribution functions
of order less than don't possess such property and, to all appearance,
contain not all information about the system under consideration.Comment: This work was reported on the International conference on statistical
