    A Next Generation High-speed Data Acquisition System for Multi-channel Infrared and Optical Photometry

    We report the design, operation, and performance of a next generation high-speed data acquisition system for multi-channel infrared and optical photometry based on the modern technologies of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, the Peripheral Component Interconnect bus, and the Global Positioning System. This system allows either direct recording of photon arrival times or binned photon counting with time resolution up to 1-μ\mus precision in Universal Time, as well as real-time data monitoring and analysis. The system also allows simultaneous recording of multi-channel observations with very flexible, reconfigurable observational modes. We present successful 20-μ\mus resolution simultaneous observations of the Crab Nebula Pulsar in the infrared (H-band) and optical (V-band) wavebands obtained with this system and 100-μ\mus resolution V-band observations of the dwarf nova IY Uma with the 5-m Hale telescope at the Palomar Observatory.Comment: 11 pages, including 4 figures, to appear in PAS

    Low energy effective theory of Fermi surface coupled with U(1) gauge field in 2+1 dimensions

    We study the low energy effective theory for a non-Fermi liquid state in 2+1 dimensions, where a transverse U(1) gauge field is coupled with a patch of Fermi surface with N flavors of fermion in the large N limit. In the low energy limit, quantum corrections are classified according to the genus of the 2d surface on which Feynman diagrams can be drawn without a crossing in a double line representation, and all planar diagrams are important in the leading order. The emerging theory has the similar structure to the four dimensional SU(N) gauge theory in the large N limit. Because of strong quantum fluctuations caused by the abundant low energy excitations near the Fermi surface, low energy fermions remain strongly coupled even in the large N limit. As a result, there are infinitely many quantum corrections that contribute to the leading frequency dependence of the Green's function of fermion on the Fermi surface. On the contrary, the boson self energy is not modified beyond the one-loop level and the theory is stable in the large N limit.     Non-invasive depth profiling of the stratum corneum in vivo using confocal Raman microscopy considering the non-homogeneous distribution of keratin

    Confocal Raman microscopy has a number of advantages in investigating the human stratum corneum (SC) in vivo and ex vivo. The penetration profiles of xenobiotics in the SC, as well as depth profiles of the physiological parameters of the SC, such as the concentration of water depending on the strength of hydrogen bonds, total water concentration, the hydrogen bonding state of water molecules, concentration of intercellular lipids, the lamellar and lateral packing order of intercellular lipids, the concentration of natural moisturizing factor molecules, carotenoids, and the secondary and tertiary structure properties of keratin are well investigated. To consider the depth-dependent Raman signal attenuation, in most cases a normalization procedure is needed, which uses the main SC’s protein keratin-related Raman peaks, based on the assumption that keratin is homogeneously distributed in the SC. We found that this assumption is not accurate for the bottom part of the SC, where the water concentration is considerably increased, thus, reducing the presence of keratin. Our results demonstrate that the bottom part of the SC depth profile should be multiplied by 0.94 in average in order to match this non-homogeneity, which result in a decrease of the uncorrected values in these depths. The correctly normalized depth profiles of the concentration of lipids, water, natural moisturizing factor and carotenoids are presented in this work. The obtained results should be taken into consideration in future skin research using confocal Raman microscopy

    A Non-Fermi Liquid from a Charged Black Hole; A Critical Fermi Ball

    Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the AdS4AdS_4 background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.Comment: v3) discussion on the singular nature of the zero energy peak added; to appear in Phys.     A critical review on sustainable biochar system through gasification: energy and environmental applications

    This review lays great emphasis on production and characteristics of biochar through gasification. Specifically, the physicochemical properties and yield of biochar through the diverse gasification conditions associated with various types of biomass were extensively evaluated. In addition, potential application scenarios of biochar through gasification were explored and their environmental implications were discussed. To qualitatively evaluate biochar sustainability through the gasification process, all gasification products (i.e., syngas and biochar) were evaluated via life cycle assessment (LCA). A concept of balancing syngas and biochar production for an economically and environmentally feasible gasification system was proposed and relevant challenges and solutions were suggested in this review
