Perceptions of Cultural Ecosystem Services: spatial differences in urban and rural areas of Kokemäenjoki, Finland
This study aims to identify and evaluate the spatial distribution of
Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) benefits perceived by people in both
urban and rural areas. A public participation GIS (PPGIS) approach was
applied with local people who responded to an online survey and mapped
their important places related to CES benefits in the Kokemäenjoki area.
We explore the perceived ecosystem services of the community using
different infrastructure types (green, grey, yellow and blue) based on
the Corine Land Cover (CLC) classes. We identified spatial patterns of
mapped important places using kernel dens ity estimation and related CES
benefit associations with the infrastructures using chi-square
residuals. We found that CES in urban areas are provided more often when
there is more than one type of infrastructure (e.g., grey and green;
grey and blue), but grey infrastructures are preferred in urban areas,
while blue infrastructures produce more CES benefits in rural areas.</p
Predicting the distribution of European Hop Hornbeam: application of MaxEnt algorithm and climatic suitability models
peer reviewedOstrya carpinifolia Scop. (European Hop Hornbeam) is a native tree in Europe as a species of the Betulaceae family. European Hop Hornbeam has a significant value for the European flora, and assessing the effects of climate change on habitats of species is essential for its sustainability. With this point of view, the main aim of the research was to predict the present and future potential distribution of European Hop Hornbeam across Europe. ‘‘IPSL-CM6A-LR’’ climate change model, ninety-six occurrence data, and seven bioclimatic variables were used to predict potential distribution areas with MaxEnt 3.4.1 program. This study applied a change analysis by comparing the present predicted potential distribution of European Hop Hornbeam with the future predicted potential distribution under the 2041–2060 and 2081–2100 SSP2 4.5 and SSP5 8.5 climate change scenarios. Study results indicated that the sum of suitable and highly suitable areas of European Hop Hornbeam is calculated to be 1,136,706 km2 for the current potential distribution. On the contrary, 2,107,187 km2 of highly suitable and suitable areas will be diminished in the worst case by 2100. The most affected bioclimatic variable is BIO 19 (Precipitation of Coldest Quarter), considering the prediction of the species distribution. These findings indicated that the natural ecosystems of the Mediterranean region will shift to northern areas. This study represented a reference for creating a strategy for the protection and conservation of the species in the future
The Prevalence of TNFα-Induced Necrosis over Apoptosis Is Determined by TAK1-RIP1 Interplay
Death receptor-induced programmed necrosis is regarded as a secondary death mechanism dominating only in cells that cannot properly induce caspase-dependent apoptosis. Here, we show that in cells lacking TGFβ-activated Kinase-1 (TAK1) expression, catalytically active Receptor Interacting Protein 1 (RIP1)-dependent programmed necrosis overrides apoptotic processes following Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNFα) stimulation and results in rapid cell death. Importantly, the activation of the caspase cascade and caspase-8-mediated RIP1 cleavage in TNFα-stimulated TAK1 deficient cells is not sufficient to prevent RIP1-dependent necrosome formation and subsequent programmed necrosis. Our results demonstrate that TAK1 acts independently of its kinase activity to prevent the premature dissociation of ubiquitinated-RIP1 from TNFα-stimulated TNF-receptor I and also to inhibit the formation of TNFα-induced necrosome complex consisting of RIP1, RIP3, FADD, caspase-8 and cFLIPL. The surprising prevalence of catalytically active RIP1-dependent programmed necrosis over apoptosis despite ongoing caspase activity implicates a complex regulatory mechanism governing the decision between both cell death pathways following death receptor stimulation
