Geometric Frustration and Dimensional Reduction at a Quantum Critical Point
We show that the spatial dimensionality of the quantum critical point
associated with Bose--Einstein condensation at T=0 is reduced when the
underlying lattice comprises a set of layers coupled by a frustrating
interaction. Our theoretical predictions for the critical temperature as a
function of the chemical potential correspond very well with recent
measurements in BaCuSiO [S. E. Sebastian \textit{et al}, Nature
\textbf{411}, 617 (2006)].Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Quantum statistics on graphs
Quantum graphs are commonly used as models of complex quantum systems, for
example molecules, networks of wires, and states of condensed matter. We
consider quantum statistics for indistinguishable spinless particles on a
graph, concentrating on the simplest case of abelian statistics for two
particles. In spite of the fact that graphs are locally one-dimensional, anyon
statistics emerge in a generalized form. A given graph may support a family of
independent anyon phases associated with topologically inequivalent exchange
processes. In addition, for sufficiently complex graphs, there appear new
discrete-valued phases. Our analysis is simplified by considering combinatorial
rather than metric graphs -- equivalently, a many-particle tight-binding model.
The results demonstrate that graphs provide an arena in which to study new
manifestations of quantum statistics. Possible applications include topological
quantum computing, topological insulators, the fractional quantum Hall effect,
superconductivity and molecular physics.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Role of anisotropy in the spin-dimer compound BaCuSi2O6
We present results of magnetisation and electron paramagnetic resonance
experiments on the spin-dimer system BaCuSi2O6. Evidence indicates that the
origin of anisotropic terms in the spin Hamiltonian is from magnetic dipolar
interactions. Axial symmetry-breaking is on a very small energy scale of ~11
mK, confirming Bose Einstein condensation critical scaling over an extended
temperature range in the vicinity of the quantum critical point.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
S_3 Symmetry and Neutrino Masses and Mixings
Based on a universal seesaw mass matrix model with three scalars \phi_i, and
by assuming an S_3 flavor symmetry for the Yukawa interactions, the lepton
masses and mixings are investigated systematically. In order to understand the
observed neutrino mixing, the charged leptons (e, \mu, \tau) are regarded as
the 3 elements (e_1, e_2, e_3) of S_3, while the neutrino mass-eigenstates are
regarded as the irreducible representation (\nu_\eta, \nu_\sigma, \nu_\pi) of
S_3, where (\nu_\pi, \nu_\eta) and \nu_\sigma are a doublet and a singlet,
respectively, which are composed of the 3 elements (\nu_1, \nu_2, \nu_3) of

Automation and robotics considerations for a lunar base
An envisioned lunar outpost shares with other NASA missions many of the same criteria that have prompted the development of intelligent automation techniques with NASA. Because of increased radiation hazards, crew surface activities will probably be even more restricted than current extravehicular activity in low Earth orbit. Crew availability for routine and repetitive tasks will be at least as limited as that envisioned for the space station, particularly in the early phases of lunar development. Certain tasks are better suited to the untiring watchfulness of computers, such as the monitoring and diagnosis of multiple complex systems, and the perception and analysis of slowly developing faults in such systems. In addition, mounting costs and constrained budgets require that human resource requirements for ground control be minimized. This paper provides a glimpse of certain lunar base tasks as seen through the lens of automation and robotic (A&R) considerations. This can allow a more efficient focusing of research and development not only in A&R, but also in those technologies that will depend on A&R in the lunar environment
Strong-Pinning Effects in Low-Temperature Creep: Charge-Density Waves in TaS_3
Nonlinear conduction in the quasi-one dimensional conductor o-TaS_3 has been
studied in the low-temperature region down to 30 mK. It was found that at
temperatures below a few Kelvins the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics
consist of several branches. The temperature evolution of the I-V curve
proceeds through sequential freezing-out of the branches. The origin of each
branch is attributed to a particular strong pinning impurity type.
Similar behavior is expected for other physical systems with collective
transport (spin-density waves, Wigner crystals, vortex lattices in type-II

Feasibility of single-order parameter description of equilibrium viscous liquid dynamics
Molecular dynamics results for the dynamic Prigogine-Defay ratio are
presented for two glass-forming liquids, thus evaluating the experimentally
relevant quantity for testing whether metastable-equilibrium liquid dynamics to
a good approximation are described by a single parameter. For the Kob-Andersen
binary Lennard-Jones mixture as well as for an asymmetric dumbbell model liquid
a single-parameter description works quite well. This is confirmed by
time-domain results where it is found that energy and pressure fluctuations are
strongly correlated on the alpha-time scale in the NVT ensemble; in the NpT
ensemble energy and volume fluctuations similarly correlate strongly.Comment: Phys. Rev. E, in pres
GRB as explosions with standard power
We show that the distribution of observed energies of GRB with known
redshifts can be explained by the hypothesis of the standard energy release
E_0=5 10^51 ergs. Two situations are possible, either the beaming angle differs
from burst to burst, or there is a universal emssion diagram in each burst, the
