Dynamics of Black Hole Pairs II: Spherical Orbits and the Homoclinic Limit of Zoom-Whirliness

Spinning black hole pairs exhibit a range of complicated dynamical behaviors. An interest in eccentric and zoom-whirl orbits has ironically inspired the focus of this paper: the constant radius orbits. When black hole spins are misaligned, the constant radius orbits are not circles but rather lie on the surface of a sphere and have acquired the name "spherical orbits". The spherical orbits are significant as they energetically frame the distribution of all orbits. In addition, each unstable spherical orbit is asymptotically approached by an orbit that whirls an infinite number of times, known as a homoclinic orbit. A homoclinic trajectory is an infinite whirl limit of the zoom-whirl spectrum and has a further significance as the separatrix between inspiral and plunge for eccentric orbits. We work in the context of two spinning black holes of comparable mass as described in the 3PN Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling included. As such, the results could provide a testing ground of the accuracy of the PN expansion. Further, the spherical orbits could provide useful initial data for numerical relativity. Finally, we comment that the spinning black hole pairs should give way to chaos around the homoclinic orbit when spin-spin coupling is incorporated.Comment: 16 pages, several figure

Rapid Assembly of the Salvileucalin B Norcaradiene Core

    Get PDF
Preparation of the polycyclic core of the cytotoxic natural product salvileucalin B is described. The key feature of this synthetic strategy is a copper-catalyzed intramolecular arene cyclopropanation to provide the central norcaradiene. These studies lay the foundation for continued investigations toward an enantioselective total synthesis of 1

An enantioselective total synthesis of the diterpenoid natural product (+)-salvileucalin B is reported. Key findings include a copper-catalyzed arene cyclopropanation reaction to provide the unusual norcaradiene core and a reversible retro-Claisen rearrangement of a highly functionalized norcaradiene intermediate

Collision integrals and high temperature transport properties for N-N, O-O, and N-O

    Get PDF
Accurate collision integrals are reported for the interactions of N(4 S 0) + N(4 S 0), O(3 P), and N(4 S 0) + O(3 P). These are computed from a semiclassical formulation of the scattering using the best available representations of all of the potential energy curves needed to describe the collisions. Experimental RKR curves and other accurate measured data are used where available; the results of accurate ab initio electronic structure calculations are used to determine the remaining potential curves. The high-lying states are found to give the largest contributions to the collision cross sections. The nine collision integrals, needed to determine transport properties to second order, are tabulated for translational temperatures in the range 250 K to 100,000 K. These results are intended to reduce the uncertainty in future predictions of the transport properties of nonequilibrium air, particularly at high temperatures. The viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, and thermal diffusion factor for a gas composed of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in thermal equilibrium are calculated. It was found that the second order contribution to the transport properties is small. Graphs of these transport properties for various mixture ratios are presented for temperatures in the range 5000 to 15000 K

Study of LPE methods for growth of InGaAsP/InP CW lasers

Two methods for liquid phase growth of InGaAsP/InP lasers were studied. Single phase growth, based on saturated melts and 5 C supercooling, was compared to two phase growth excess InP and 20 C nominal supercooling. Substrates cut on the (100) plane were used, and morphology in both cases was excellent and comparable to that obtainable in AlGaAs materials. A high degree of reproducibility was obtained in the materials grown by the two phased method, which is therefore presently preferred for the preparation of laser material. A refractive index step of 0.28 and an index n = 3.46 were obtained for In.81Ga.19As,5P5 lasing at 1.3 microns. Oxide-stripe lasers with typical room temperature cw threshold currents of 180 mA were obtained and some of them showed single mode behavior without lateral cavity modifications. COntinuous operation of 800 h at room temperature was obtained without noticeable degradation

Testing saturation with diffractive jet production in deep inelastic scattering

We analyse the dissociation of a photon in diffractive deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the diffractive mass is much bigger than the photon virtuality. We consider the dominant q\bar{q}g component keeping track of the transverse momentum of the gluon which can be measured as a final-state jet. We show that the diffractive gluon-jet production cross-section is strongly sensitive to unitarity constraints. In particular, in a model with parton saturation, this cross-section is sensitive to the scale at which unitarity effects become important, the saturation scale. We argue that the measurement of diffractive jets at HERA in the limit of high diffractive mass can provide useful information on the saturation regime of QCD.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, misprints corrected, published versio

    InGaAsP/InP laser development for single-mode, high-data-rate communications

    Get PDF
Materials studies as well as general and specific device development were carried out in the InGaAsP system. A comparison was made of three standard methods of evaluating substrate quality by means of dislocation studies. A cause of reduced yield of good wafers, the pullover of melt from one bin to the next, has been analyzed. Difficulties with reproducible zinc acceptor doping have been traced to segregation of zinc in the In/Zn alloy used for the doping source. Using EBIC measurments, the pn junction was shown to drift in location depending on factors not always under control. An analysis of contact structures by SIMS showed that the depth to which the sintered Au/Zn contact penetrates into the structure is typically 0.13 microns, or well within the cap layer and out of the p-type cladding and thus not deleterious to laser prformance. The problem of single-mode laser development was investigated and it was shown to be related to the growth habit over four different possible substrate configurations. The fabrication of constricted double heterojunctions, mesa stripe buried heterostructures, and buried heterostructures was discussed, and measurements were presented on the device properties of single-mode buried heterostructure lasers. Results include single spectral line emission at 3 mW and a threshold current of 60 mA

Soft interaction model and the LHC data

Most models for soft interactions which were proposed prior to the measurements at the LHC, are only marginally compatible with LHC data, our GLM model has the same deficiency. In this paper we investigate possible causes of the problem, by considering separate fits to the high energy (W>500GeVW > 500\, GeV), and low energy (W<500GeVW < 500\, GeV) data. Our new results are moderately higher than our previous predictions. Our results for total and elastic cross sections are systematically lower that the recent Totem and Alice published values, while our results for the inelastic and forward slope agree with the data. If with additional experimental data, the errors are reduced, while the central cross section values remain unchanged, we will need to reconsider the physics on which our model is built.Comment: 12 pp, 12 figures in .eps file

    Cultivating nutrition

    Get PDF
"Over the past decade, donor-funded policies and programs designed to address undernutrition in the Global South have shifted away from agriculture-based strategies toward nutrient supplementation and food fortification programs. Given the potential benefits resulting from agriculture-based nutrition interventions, this study uses Q methodology to explore the views of a range of stakeholders from both developed and developing countries on the value of—and constraints related to—gender-sensitive, nutrition-oriented agricultural projects. The three distinct viewpoints that emerge from this exercise all support the use of agricultural strategies to improve nutrition and underline the importance of gender-sensitive approaches. The viewpoints differ, however, on the relative importance of nutrition education, the strategic use of nutrient supplementation and food fortification, and the degree to which agriculture-based approaches have an impact on nutrition. The findings indicate that there is common ground among a range of stakeholders—donors, researchers, policymakers, and program practitioners—on the benefits of agriculture and gender-sensitive strategies to improve nutrition. These areas of agreement can serve as a foundation for forging an effective integrative strategy to improve nutrition that includes gender-sensitive agricultural approaches."
