NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS ON PURELY COHESIVE SOIL UNDER ECCENTRIC LOADING

The classical theory of the bearing capacity of shallow foundations is based on the effective width approach for the case of vertical eccentric loading. This method stipulates that the area of the foundation, used in the calculation of the bearing capacity, is equal to the area of a fictive foundation on which the loading is applied at the center. This paper evaluates the performance of this approach in predicting the ultimate load of the footing. A numerical analysis is performed to estimate the undrained bearing capacity mobilized in a purely cohesive soil under a strip footing, using the finite difference code FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3 dimensions). The results of this analysis show that the effective width approach provides a good approximation of the bearing capacity for this kind of problems

Verrucous carcinoma arising in an extended giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke–Löwenstein tumor): a case report and review of the literature

INTRODUCTION: Verrucous carcinoma of the external genitalia and perianal region is a rare variant of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. It has been reported to have limited metastatic potential. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 54 year-old Moroccan man who presented with locally advanced giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke–Löwenstein tumor) after prolonged intervals of neglect (approximately 10 years). The disease covered his suprapubic, external genitalia and perianal region. It was locally aggressive with extensive tissue destruction. After a biopsy of the lesion, the diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma was confirmed. He initially received chemoradiotherapy, followed by extensive local excision, but he developed septic shock and died a few days later. CONCLUSIONS: The purpose of this case report is to present a case of verrucous carcinoma arising in an extensive giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke–Löwenstein tumor) and discuss the literature on its diagnosis and management

Giant primary adrenal hydatid cyst presenting with arterial hypertension: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Introduction

A primary hydatid cyst of the adrenal gland is still an exceptional localization. The adrenal gland is an uncommon site even in Morocco, where echinococcal disease is endemic.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 64-year-old Moroccan man who presented with the unusual symptom of arterial hypertension associated with left flank pain. Computed tomography showed a cystic mass of his left adrenal gland with daughter cysts filing the lesion (Type III). Despite his negative serology tests, the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst was confirmed on surgical examination. Our patient underwent surgical excision of his left adrenal gland with normalization of blood pressure. No recurrence has occurred after 36 months of follow-up.

Conclusion

There are two remarkable characteristics of this case report; the first is the unusual location of the cyst, the second is the association of an adrenal hydatid cyst with arterial hypertension, which has rarely been reported in the literature.</p

ESTIMATION OF THE POROSITY OF PORTLAND CEMENT PASTES USING BACKSCATTERED ELECTRON IMAGE

Microscopy plays an important role in the examination of cementitious materials. Electron-optical techniques allowexamination of microstructural details. The increased application of scanning electron microscopy in cement and concreteinvestigations has brought attention to the estimation of the porosity. Backscattered Electron image has been established as amethod for quantitative analysis of hardened cement paste. This paper describes work and its application to Ordinary Portlandcement paste. Results show that the technique can be used to determine the porosity of Portland cement pastes. The success ofthese investigations is, influenced by the type and quality of specimen preparation. In particular, backscattered electron and Xrayimaging modes are influenced by the specimen surface characteristics, with the ideal surface being highly polished. Thetechnique can be a powerful tool to determine this essential factor of durability in concrete materials.Keys words: porosities, cement paste, strength, Scanning electron microscope, methanol exchange

Gemcitabine in Previously Treated Advanced or Recurrent Cervical Cancer A Retrospective Study

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common femalersquos cancer in Morocco. The objective of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and the toxicity of gemcitabin in previously treated advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in medical oncology department of University Hospital of Hassan II to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of gemcitabine in patients with previously treated squamous cell carcinoma of cervical cancer over a period of 5 years between 2011 and 2015. Results: Twenty one patients were included into the study. The dose of gemcitabine was 1250 mg/m2 over 30 min weekly two with a 2-weeks rest until progressive disease or adverse effects prohibited further therapy.nbsp There were two partial responses (9%) and no complete response was observed. Six patients had stable disease (28%). Gemcitabine had minimal serious adverse effects. No grade 4 adverse disease was observed. The median progression free survival was 2 months with median overall survival of 4.6 months. nbspConclusion: nbspAccording to our study, gemcitabine has a minimal activity in previously treated advanced cervical cancer in second line. Additional investigation is warranted to identify alternate therapy in this situation
