    Searching for t-bar t Resonances at the Large Hadron Collider

    Many new physics models predict resonances with masses in the TeV range which decay into a pair of top quarks. With its large cross section, t-bar t production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offers an excellent opportunity to search for such particles. We present a detailed study of the discovery potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the gluon in bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) models in the t-bar t -> ell^+/- nu b-bar bq-bar q' (ell=e, mu) final state. We utilize final states with one or two tagged b-quarks, and two, three or four jets (including b-jets). Our calculations take into account the finite resolution of detectors, the energy loss due to b-quark decays, the expected reduced b-tagging efficiency at large t-bar t invariant masses, and include the background originating from Wb-bar b+jets, (Wb+W-bar b)+jets, W+jets, and single top + jets production. We derive semi-realistic 5 sigma discovery limits for nine different KK gluon scenarios, and compare them with those for KK gravitons, and a Z_H boson in the Littlest Higgs model. We also analyze the capabilities of the LHC experiments to differentiate between individual KK gluon models and measure the couplings of KK gluons to quarks. We find that, for the parameters and models chosen, KK gluons with masses up to about 4 TeV can be discovered at the LHC. The ability of the LHC to discriminate between different bulk RS models, and to measure the couplings of the KK gluons is found to be highly model dependent.Comment: revtex3, 27 pages, 5 tables, 6 figure

    Effects of Social Support on Compliance in Rehabilitating Athletes

    The purpose of the study was to better understand if social support has an effect at all on the athlete’s compliance in coming in to do their rehabilitation during an injury. Those who participated in this study were from the colleges and universities in the state of Ohio. The participants were collegiate athletes who were in a rehabilitation program for six or more weeks and had returned to play. Of the 56 surveys returned, 18 (32.14%) of those were fully completed, and nine (16.07%) of those, consisting of seven (77.78%) females and two (22.22%) males, met the criteria set. Athletes were “strongly satisfied” with the listening support that they received from their friends and athletic trainer (6 count each), seven athletes found it “very easy” to obtain more listening support from their athletic trainer, and 6 athletes answered “very much” for their athletic trainer for the questions on each persons contribution of listening support to their overall well-being. Athletes were then asked how they felt the social support they did receive impacted their desire to be compliant. A total of 89% answered yes with giving responses that had common themes such as: they felt encouraged, it was helpful, they were feeling stronger and better, and it motivated them. Those who answered no (11.11%) responded that the social support did not have an impact on their desire to attend rehabilitation due to the fact that they felt “self-motivated”. The definition of social support that was used was an exchange of resources between two individuals perceived by the provider or the recipient to be intended to enhance the well being of the recipient. The definition of compliance that was used was the behavior an athletes demonstrates by pursuing a course of action that coincides with the recommendations of the clinician. It was found that there is a relationship between these two factors, which promotes teaching athletes the importance of having proper social support during rehabilitation to increase compliance

    SummaryPolyploidy is defined as an increase in genome DNA content. Throughout the plant and animal kingdoms specific cell types become polyploid as part of their differentiation programs. When this occurs in subsets of tissues within an organism it is termed somatic polyploidy, because it is distinct from the increase in ploidy that is inherited through the germline and present in every cell type of the organism. Germline polyploidy is common in plants and occurs in some animals, such as amphibians, but will not be discussed further here. Somatic polyploid cells can be mononucleate or multinucleate, and the replicated sister chromatids can remain attached and aligned, producing polytene chromosomes, or they can be dispersed (Figure 1). In this Primer, we focus on why somatic polyploidy occurs and how cells become polyploid — the first of these issues being more speculative, given the status of the field

    Performance of LPG Storage Tanks on Ground Improved by Stone Columns

    This paper describes the construction of four large tanks on poor soil conditions consisting of hydraulic fill placed over estuarine silt in Dublin port. The limited differential settlement that could be tolerated by the tanks required that they could not be placed on the existing ground. The optimum solution was found to be ground treatment using vibro-replacement with the formation of stone columns and compaction of the fill. The paper describes the design method used and the control tests. The predicted settlements are compared with settlement readings of the tanks following construction. These show that the chosen solution has performed well and satisfied the design requirements

    Making judgements about students making work : lecturers’ assessment practices in art and design.

    This research study explores the assessment practices in two higher education art and design departments. The key aim of this research was to explore art and design studio assessment practices as lived by and experienced by art and design lecturers. This work draws on two bodies of pre existing research. Firstly this study adopted innovative methodological approaches that have been employed to good effect to explore assessment in text based subjects (think aloud) and moderation mark agreement (observation). Secondly the study builds on existing research into the assessment of creative practice. By applying thinking aloud methodologies into a creative practice assessment context the authors seek to illuminate the ‘in practice’ rather than espoused assessment approaches adopted. The analysis suggests that lecturers in the study employed three macro conceptions of quality to support the judgement process. These were; the demonstration of significant learning over time, the demonstration of effective studentship and the presentation of meaningful art/design work
