Ion induced quark-gluon implosion
We investigate nuclear fragmentation in the central proton-nucleus and
nucleus - nucleus collisions at the energies of LHC. We argue that within the
semi-classical approximation because of fast increase with energy of cross
sections of soft and hard interactions each nucleon is stripped in the average
process off ``soft'' partons and fragments into a collection of leading quarks
and gluons with large . Valence quarks and gluons are streaming in the
opposite directions when viewed in the c.m. of the produced system. The
resulting pattern of the fragmentation of the colliding nuclei leads to an
implosion of the quark and gluon constituents of the nuclei. The matter density
produced at the initial stage in the nucleus fragmentation region is estimated
to be 50 GeV/fm at the LHC energies and probably 10

Charged and superconducting vortices in dense quark matter
Quark matter at astrophysical densities may contain stable vortices due to
the spontaneous breaking of hypercharge symmetry by kaon condensation. We argue
that these vortices could be both charged and electrically superconducting.
Current carrying loops (vortons) could be long lived and play a role in the
magnetic and transport properties of this matter. We provide a scenario for

Open Space – a collaborative process for facilitating Tourism IT partnerships
The success of IT projects depends on the success of the partnerships on which they are based. However past research by the author has identified a significant rate of failure in these partnerships, predominantly due to an overly technical mindset, leading to the question: “how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within tourism, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?” The tourism partnership literature is explored for additional insights revealing that issues connected with power, participation and normative positions play a major role. The method, Open Space, is investigated for its ability to engage stakeholders in free and open debate. This paper reports on a one-day Open Space event sponsored by two major intermediaries in the UK travel industry who wanted to consult their business partners. Both the running of the event and its results reveal how Open Space has the potential to address some of the weaknesses associated with tourism partnerships
Bulk viscosity in a cold CFL superfluid
We compute one of the bulk viscosity coefficients of cold CFL quark matter in
the temperature regime where the contribution of mesons, quarks and gluons to
transport phenomena is Boltzmann suppressed. In that regime dissipation occurs
due to collisions of superfluid phonons, the Goldstone modes associated to the
spontaneous breaking of baryon symmetry. We first review the hydrodynamics of
relativistic superfluids, and remind that there are at least three bulk
viscosity coefficients in these systems. We then compute the bulk viscosity
coefficient associated to the normal fluid component of the superfluid. In our
analysis we use Son's effective field theory for the superfluid phonon, amended
to include scale breaking effects proportional to the square of the strange
quark mass m_s. We compute the bulk viscosity at leading order in the scale
breaking parameter, and find that it is dominated by collinear splitting and
joining processes. The resulting transport coefficient is zeta=0.011 m_s^4/T,
growing at low temperature T until the phonon fluid description stops making
sense. Our results are relevant to study the rotational properties of a compact

Meson Exchange Effect on Color Superconductivity
We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of
two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, . The
chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as
gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the
value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns
out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a
spin and isospin singlet state.
We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of
the candidates of in-medium QCD phase at moderate density.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, minor correction
Vortices on Higher Genus Surfaces
We consider the topological interactions of vortices on general surfaces. If
the genus of the surface is greater than zero, the handles can carry magnetic
flux. The classical state of the vortices and the handles can be described by a
mapping from the fundamental group to the unbroken gauge group. The allowed
configurations must satisfy a relation induced by the fundamental group. Upon
quantization, the handles can carry ``Cheshire charge.'' The motion of the
vortices can be described by the braid group of the surface. How the motion of

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) Gag is trafficked in an AP-3 and AP-5 dependent manner
Although human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) types 1 and 2 are closely related lentiviruses with similar replication cycles, HIV-2 infection is associated with slower progression to AIDS, a higher proportion of long term non-progressors, and lower rates of transmission than HIV-1, likely as a consequence of a lower viral load during HIV-2 infection. A mechanistic explanation for the differential viral load remains unclear but knowledge of differences in particle production between HIV-1 and HIV-2 may help to shed light on this issue. In contrast to HIV-1, little is known about the assembly of HIV-2 particles, and the trafficking of HIV-2 Gag, the structural component of the virus, within cells. We have established that HIV-2 Gag accumulates in intracellular CD63 positive compartments, from which it may be delivered or recycled to the cell surface, or degraded. HIV-2 particle release was dependent on the adaptor protein complex AP-3 and the newly identified AP-5 complex, but much less so on AP-1. In contrast, HIV-1 particle release required AP-1 and AP-3, but not AP-5. AP-2, an essential component of clathrin-mediated endocytosis, which was previously shown to be inhibitory to HIV-1 particle release, had no effect on HIV-2. The differential requirement for adaptor protein complexes confirmed that HIV-1 and HIV-2 Gag have distinct cellular trafficking pathways, and that HIV-2 particles may be more susceptible to degradation prior to release
SO(10) Cosmic Strings and SU(3) Color Cheshire Charge
Certain cosmic strings that occur in GUT models such as can carry a
magnetic flux which acts nontrivially on objects carrying
quantum numbers. We show that such strings are non-Abelian Alice strings
carrying nonlocalizable colored ``Cheshire" charge. We examine claims made in
the literature that strings can have a long-range, topological
Aharonov-Bohm interaction that turns quarks into leptons, and observe that such
a process is impossible. We also discuss flux-flux scattering using a

The Role of GLUK5-Containing Kainate Receptors in Entorhinal Cortex Gamma Frequency Oscillations
Using in vitro brain slices of hippocampus and cortex, neuronal oscillations in the frequency range of 30–80 Hz (gamma frequency oscillations) can be induced by a number of pharmacological manipulations. The most routinely used is the bath application of the broad-spectrum glutamate receptor agonist, kainic acid. In the hippocampus, work using transgenic kainate receptor knockout mice have revealed information about the specific subunit composition of the kainate receptor implicated in the generation and maintenance of the gamma frequency oscillation. However, there is a paucity of such detail regarding gamma frequency oscillation in the cortex. Using specific pharmacological agonists and antagonists for the kainate receptor, we have set out to examine the contribution of kainate receptor subtypes to gamma frequency oscillation in the entorhinal cortex. The findings presented demonstrate that in contrast to the hippocampus, kainate receptors containing the GLUK5 subunit are critically important for the generation and maintenance of gamma frequency oscillation in the entorhinal cortex. Future work will concentrate on determining the exact nature of the cellular expression of kainate receptors in the entorhinal cortex
