Carbonate Formation in Non-Aqueous Environments by Solid-Gas Carbonation of Silicates
We have produced synthetic analogues of cosmic silicates using the Sol Gel
method, producing amorphous silicates of composition Mg(x)Ca(1-x)SiO3. Using
synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction on Beamline I11 at the Diamond Light
Source, together with a newly-commissioned gas cell, real-time powder
diffraction scans have been taken of a range of silicates exposed to CO2 under
non-ambient conditions. The SXPD is complemented by other techniques including

In situ apparatus for the study of clathrate hydrates relevant to solar system bodies using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy
Clathrate hydrates are believed to play a significant role in various solar
system environments, e.g. comets, and the surfaces and interiors of icy
satellites, however the structural factors governing their formation and
dissociation are poorly understood. We demonstrate the use of a high pressure
gas cell, combined with variable temperature cooling and time-resolved data
collection, to the in situ study of clathrate hydrates under conditions
relevant to solar system environments. Clathrates formed and processed within
the cell are monitored in situ using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and
Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction allows the formation of clathrate
hydrates to be observed as CO2 gas is applied to ice formed within the cell.
Complete conversion is obtained by annealing at temperatures just below the ice
melting point. A subsequent rise in the quantity of clathrate is observed as
the cell is thermally cycled. Four regions between 100-5000cm-1 are present in
the Raman spectra that carry features characteristic of both ice and clathrate
formation. This novel experimental arrangement is well suited to studying
clathrate hydrates over a range of temperature (80-500K) and pressure
(1-100bar) conditions and can be used with a variety of different gases and
starting aqueous compositions. We propose the increase in clathrate formation
observed during thermal cycling may be due to the formation of a quasi
liquid-like phase that forms at temperatures below the ice melting point, but
which allows easier formation of new clathrate cages, or the retention and
delocalisation of previously formed clathrate structures, possibly as amorphous
clathrate. The structural similarities between hexagonal ice, the quasi
liquid-like phase, and crystalline CO2 hydrate mean that differences in the
Raman spectrum are subtle; however, all features out to 5000cm-1 are diagnostic

Pan-Arctic and regional sea ice predictability: initialization month dependence
Seasonal-to-interannual predictions of Arctic sea ice may be important for Arctic communities and industries alike. Previous studies have suggested that Arctic sea ice is potentially predictable but that the skill of predictions of the September extent minimum, initialized in early summer, may be low. The authors demonstrate that a melt season âpredictability barrierâ and two predictability reemergence mechanisms, suggested by a previous study, are robust features of five global climate models. Analysis of idealized predictions with one of these models [Hadley Centre Global Environment Model, version 1.2 (HadGEM1.2)], initialized in January, May and July, demonstrates that this predictability barrier exists in initialized forecasts as well. As a result, the skill of sea ice extent and volume forecasts are strongly start date dependent and those that are initialized in May lose skill much faster than those initialized in January or July. Thus, in an operational setting, initializing predictions of extent and volume in July has strong advantages for the prediction of the September minimum when compared to predictions initialized in May.
Furthermore, a regional analysis of sea ice predictability indicates that extent is predictable for longer in the seasonal ice zones of the North Atlantic and North Pacific than in the regions dominated by perennial ice in the central Arctic and marginal seas. In a number of the Eurasian shelf seas, which are important for Arctic shipping, only the forecasts initialized in July have continuous skill during the first summer. In contrast, predictability of ice volume persists for over 2 yr in the central Arctic but less in other regions
Total scattering descriptions of local and cooperative distortions in the oxide spinel (Mg,Cu)Cr2O4 with dilute Jahn-Teller ions
The normal spinel oxide MgCr2O4 is cubic at room temperature while the normal
spinel CuCr2O4 is tetragonal as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller nature of Cu2+
on the tetrahedral sites. Despite different end-member structures, complete
solid solutions of Mg_{1-x}Cu_xCr2O4 can be prepared that display a first-order
structural transition with composition x = 0.43 at room temperature. Reverse
Monte Carlo analysis of total neutron scattering on data acquired between 300 K
and 15 K on samples with x = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.43 provides unbiased local and
average structure descriptions of the samples, including an understanding of
the transition from local Jahn-Teller distortions in the cubic phase to
cooperative distortions that result in a tetragonal structure. Distributions of
continuous symmetry measures help to understand and distinguish distorted and
undistorted coordination around the tetrahedral site in the solid solutions.
Magnetic exchange bias is observed in field-cooled hysteresis loops of samples
with dilute Cu2+ concentration and in samples with tetragonal--cubic phase

Bacterial Cholangitis, Cholecystitis, or both in Dogs
BACKGROUND: Bacterial cholangitis and cholecystitis are rarely reported, poorly characterized diseases in the dog. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical features of these conditions. ANIMALS: Twentyâseven clientâowned dogs with bacterial cholangitis, cholecystitis, or both. METHODS: Multicenter, retrospective cases series of dogs with bacterial cholangitis, cholecystitis, or both, presenting January 2000 to June 2011 to 4 Veterinary Schools in Ireland/United Kingdom. Interrogation of hospital databases identified all cases with the inclusion criteria; histopathologically confirmed cholangitis or cholecystitis and bile culture/cytology results supporting a bacterial etiology. RESULTS: Twentyâseven dogs met the inclusion criteria with approximately 460 hepatitis cases documented over the same study period. Typical clinical pathology findings were increases in liver enzyme activities (25/26), hyperbilirubinemia (20/26), and an inflammatory leukogram (21/24). Ultrasound findings, although nonspecific, aided decisionâmaking in 25/26 cases. The most frequent hepatobiliary bacterial isolates were Escherichia coli (n = 17; 16 cases), Enterococcus spp. (n = 8; 6 cases), and Clostridium spp. (n = 5; 5 cases). Antimicrobial resistance was an important feature of aerobic isolates; 10/16 E. coli isolates resistant to 3 or more antimicrobial classes. Biliary tract rupture complicated nearly one third of cases, associated with significant mortality (4/8). Discharged dogs had a guarded to fair prognosis; 17/18 alive at 2 months, although 5/10 reâevaluated had persistent liver enzyme elevation 2â12 months later. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Bacterial cholangitis and cholecystitis occur more frequently than suggested by current literature and should be considered in dogs presenting with jaundice and fever, abdominal pain, or an inflammatory leukogram or with ultrasonographic evidence of gallbladder abnormalities
Competitive Activation of a Methyl CâH Bond of Dimethylformamide at an Iridium Center
During the synthesis of [AsPh_4][Ir(CO)_2I_3Me] by refluxing IrCl_3·3H_2O in DMF (DMF = dimethylformamide) in the presence of aqueous HCl, followed by sequential treatment with [AsPh_4]Cl, NaI, and methyl iodide and finally recrystallization from methylene chloride/pentane, three crystalline byproducts were obtained: [AsPh4]_2[Ir(CO)I_5], [AsPh_4]_2[trans-Ir(CO)I_4Cl], and [AsPh_4][Ir(CO)(Îș^2O,C-CH_2NMeCHO)Cl_2I]. The last of these, whose structure (along with the others) was determined by X-ray diffraction, results from activation of a methyl CâH bond of dimethylformamide, rather than the normally much more reactive aldehydic CâH bond
