Multiphoton Processes in Driven Mesoscopic Systems
We study the statistics of multi-photon absorption/emission processes in a
mesoscopic ring threaded by an harmonic time-dependent flux . For this
sake, we demonstrate a useful analogy between the Keldysh quantum kinetic
equation for the electrons distribution function and a Continuous Time Random
Walk in energy space with corrections due to interference effects. Studying the
probability to absorb/emit quanta per scattering event, we
explore the crossover between ultra-quantum/low-intensity limit and
quasi-classical/high-intensity regime, and the role of multiphoton processes in

The Snapshot Hubble U-Band Cluster Survey (SHUCS) II. Star Cluster Population of NGC 2997
We study the star cluster population of NGC 2997, a giant spiral galaxy
located at 9.5 Mpc and targeted by the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey
(SHUCS). Combining our U-band imaging from SHUCS with archival BVI imaging from
HST, we select a high confidence sample of clusters in the circumnuclear ring
and disk through a combination of automatic detection procedures and visual
inspection. The cluster luminosity functions in all four filters can be
approximated by power-laws with indices of to . Some deviations
from pure power-law shape are observed, hinting at the presence of a high-mass
truncation in the cluster mass function. However, upon inspection of the
cluster mass function, we find it is consistent with a pure power-law of index
despite a slight bend at M. No
statistically significant truncation is observed. From the cluster age
distributions, we find a low rate of disruption () in both the
disk and circumnuclear ring. Finally, we estimate the cluster formation
efficiency () over the last 100 Myr in each region, finding %
for the disk, % for the circumnuclear ring, and % for the
entire UBVI footprint. This study highlights the need for wide-field UBVI
coverage of galaxies to study cluster populations in detail, though a small
sample of clusters can provide significant insight into the characteristics of

Growth of seven perennial plant species adapted to the Brazilian Semi-Arid. Abstract - Measuring plant height (y) and canopy diameter (x) in trees may not be an easy task, but stem diameter (z) can be more easily evaluated. This work's objective was two-fold: evaluate the growth of species adapted to the Brazilian Semi-Arid Region in the first two years of age, and obtain linear equations to estimate y and x from z, in those species. A random block design with four replications was employed. The values for x, z, and y were measured biannually from October/2003 to March/2005. Prosopis juliflora and Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia showed the highest stem diameter and plant height values, respectively, and both showed the highest canopy diameter. In the equations to estimate plant height from the stem diameter the value of the coefficient of determination (R2) ranged from 0.76 (Tamarindus indica and Leucaena leucocephala) to 0.92 (Prosopis juliflora and Azadirachta indica). In the equations that allowed to estimate the crown diameter from the stem diameter the R2 value ranged from 0.70 (Leucaena leucocephala) to 0.92 (Azadirachta indica). Este trabalho teve por objetivos avaliar o crescimento de espécies adaptadas ao Semi-Árido brasileiro, nos primeiros dois anos de idade, e obter equações lineares para estimar y e x a partir de z, nessas espécies. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Os valores de x, z e y foram medidos semestralmente de outubro/2003 a março/2005. Prosopis juliflora e Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia apresentaram os maiores diâmetros do caule e altura da planta, respectivamente, e ambas apresentaram o maior diâmetro da copa. An entirely analytical cosmological model
The purpose of the present study is to show that in a particular cosmological
model, with an affine equation of state, one can obtain, besides the background
given by the scale factor, Hubble and deceleration parameters, a representation
in terms of scalar fields and, more important, explicit mathematical
expressions for the density contrast and the power spectrum. Although the model
so obtained is not realistic, it reproduces features observed in some previous
numerical studies and, therefore, it may be useful in the testing of numerical

The age of the Galactic thin disk from Th/Eu nucleocosmochronology II. Chronological analysis
The purpose of this work is to resume investigation of Galactic thin disk
dating using nucleocosmochronology with Th/Eu stellar abundance ratios, a theme
absent from the literature since 1990. [Th/Eu] abundance ratios for a sample of
20 disk dwarfs/subgiants of F5 to G8 spectral type with -0.8 <= [Fe/H] <= +0.3,
determined in the first paper of this series, were adopted for this analysis.
We developed a Galactic chemical evolution model that includes the effect of
refuses, which are composed of stellar remnants (white dwarfs, neutron stars
and black holes) and low-mass stellar formation residues (terrestrial planets,
comets, etc.), contributing to a better fit to observational constraints. Two
Galactic disk ages were estimated, by comparing literature data on Th/Eu
production and solar abundance ratios to the model ((8.7 +5.8-4.1) Gyr), and by
comparing [Th/Eu] vs. [Fe/H] curves from the model to our stellar abundance
ratio data ((8.2 +/- 1.9) Gyr), yielding the final, average value (8.3 +/- 1.8)
Gyr. This is the first Galactic disk age determined via Th/Eu
nucleocosmochronology, and corroborates the most recent white dwarf ages
determined via cooling sequence calculations, which indicate a low age (<~ 10
