Discontinuities without discontinuity: The Weakly-enforced Slip Method
Tectonic faults are commonly modelled as Volterra or Somigliana dislocations
in an elastic medium. Various solution methods exist for this problem. However,
the methods used in practice are often limiting, motivated by reasons of
computational efficiency rather than geophysical accuracy. A typical
geophysical application involves inverse problems for which many different
fault configurations need to be examined, each adding to the computational
load. In practice, this precludes conventional finite-element methods, which
suffer a large computational overhead on account of geometric changes. This
paper presents a new non-conforming finite-element method based on weak
imposition of the displacement discontinuity. The weak imposition of the
discontinuity enables the application of approximation spaces that are
independent of the dislocation geometry, thus enabling optimal reuse of
computational components. Such reuse of computational components renders
finite-element modeling a viable option for inverse problems in geophysical
applications. A detailed analysis of the approximation properties of the new
formulation is provided. The analysis is supported by numerical experiments in
2D and 3D.Comment: Submitted for publication in CMAM
Pathogenic bacteria and indicator organisms for anti-microbial resistance in pork meat at retail level in The Netherlands.
Slaughter pigs and pork carcasses are often contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. Consequently raw meat on sale in retail stores may also contain these bacteria. In The Netherlands the calculated contribution by pigs to the relative occurrence of human salmonellosis in the period 1994-1998 was 25.2 % (van Pelt, 2001). Survey and monitoring data on the contamination of raw products with pathogens like Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157 are essential for making risk estimates, and the results of surveys carried out in 1990/2000 and 2002 are presented here. In 2002 also a surveillance of anti-microbial resistance among indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecium/faecalis) isolated from pork meat was started. The results show that pork meat was contaminated with Salmonella in levels between 6.2 - 10.5 %, S. Typhimurium being the predominant serotype, and to a lesser extent with Campylobacter, Listeria and E. coli O157
The Evolutionary Status of Isolated Dwarf Irregular Galaxies II. Star Formation Histories and Gas Depletion
The results of UBV and H alpha imaging of a large sample of isolated dwarf
irregular galaxies are interpreted in the context of composite stellar
population models. The observed optical colors are best fit by composite
stellar populations which have had approximately constant star formation rates
for at least 10 Gyr. The galaxies span a range of central surface brightness,
from 20.5 to 25.0 mag arcsec^{-2}; there is no correlation between surface
brightness and star formation history. Although the current star formation
rates are low, it is possible to reproduce the observed luminosities without a
major starburst episode. The derived gas depletion timescales are long,
typically ~20 Gyr. These results indicate that dwarf irregular galaxies will be
able to continue with their slow, but constant, star formation activity for at
least another Hubble time.
The sample of isolated dIs is compared to a sample of star bursting dwarf
galaxies taken from the literature. The star bursting dwarf galaxies have many
similar properties; the main difference between these two types of gas-rich
dwarf galaxies is that the current star formation is concentrated in the center
of the star bursting systems while it is much more distributed in the quiescent
dIs. This results in pronounced color gradients for the starbursting dwarf
galaxies, while the majority of the quiescent dwarf irregular galaxies have
minor or non-existent color gradients. Thus, the combination of low current
star formation rates, blue colors, and the lack of significant color gradients
indicates that star formation percolates slowly across the disk of normal dwarf
galaxies in a quasi-continuous manner.Comment: 16 pages, uses emulateapj, to appear in The Astronomical Journal

Glutathione S-transferase activity and isoenzyme composition in benign ovarian tumours, untreated malignant ovarian tumours, and malignant ovarian tumours after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.
Glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoenzyme composition, isoenzyme quantities and enzymatic activity were investigated in benign (n = 4) ovarian tumours and malignant ovarian tumours, before (n = 20) and after (n = 16) chemotherapy. Enzymatic activity of GST in cytosols was measured by determining 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene conjugation with glutathione, cytosolic GST subunits were determined by wide pore reversed phase HPLC, using a S-hexylglutathione-agarose affinity column, and isoelectric focussing. Both GST activity and GST pi amount were not related to histopathologic type, differentiation grade, or tumour volume index in untreated malignant tumours. GST isoenzyme patterns were identical in benign tumours and malignant tumours before and after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy, while GST pi was the predominant transferase. Mean GST activity and GST pi amount were decreased (P < 0.05) in malignant ovarian tumours after platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy compared to untreated ovarian malignant tumours. No relation was found in untreated ovarian tumours between GST pi amount and response to platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy. Thus, within the limitations of the current study no arguments were found for a role of GST in in vivo drug resistance of malignant ovarian tumours to platinum/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy
Pathogenic bacteria in pork meat at retail level in the Netherlands
In a survey carried out on raw meat on sale in retail stores in 1999 and 2000, Salmonella was found in 33 (6.2%) of 533 pork samples, the predominant serotype being Salmonella Typhimurium ( 14x) of which 3 isolates belonged to phage type 0104. In minced pork/beef salmonella was isolated from 22 (7.8%) of 281 samples. Also here S. Typhimurium (6x) was the predominant serotype. Campylobacter was not isolated from 524 samples pork and from 4 samples (1.5%) minced pork/beef. YTEC 0157 was detected in 1 (0.7%) of 153 samples pork and in 1 of 50 samples minced pork/beef
The effects of social environment on AD-related pathology in hAPP-J20 mice and tau-P301L mice
In humans, social factors (e.g., loneliness) have been linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease (AD). To date, AD pathology is primarily characterized by amyloid-β plaques and tau tangles. We aimed to assess the effect of single- and group-housing on AD-related pathology in a mouse model for amyloid pathology (J20, and WT controls) and a mouse model for tau pathology (P301L) with and without seeding of synthetic human tau fragments (K18). Female mice were either single housed (SH) or group housed (GH) from the age of 6-7 weeks onwards. In 12-week-old P301L mice, tau pathology was induced through seeding by injecting K18 into the dorsal hippocampus (P301L K18), while control mice received a PBS injection (P301L PBS). P301L mice were sacrificed at 4 months of age and J20 mice at 10 months of age. In all mice brain pathology was histologically assessed by examining microglia, the CA1 pyramidal cell layer and specific AD pathology: analysis of plaques in J20 mice and tau hyperphosphorylation in P301L mice. Contrary to our expectation, SH-J20 mice interestingly displayed fewer plaques in the hippocampus compared to GH-J20 mice. However, housing did not affect tau hyperphosphorylation at Ser202/Thr205 of P301L mice, nor neuronal cell death in the CA1 region in any of the mice. The number of microglia was increased by the J20 genotype, and their activation (based on cell body to cell size ratio) in the CA1 was affected by genotype and housing condition (interaction effect). Single housing of P301L mice was linked to the development of stereotypic behavior (i.e. somersaulting and circling behavior). In P301L K18 mice, an increased number of microglia were observed, among which were rod microglia. Taken together, our findings point to a significant effect of social housing conditions on amyloid plaques and microglia in J20 mice and on the development of stereotypic behavior in P301L mice, indicating that the social environment can modulate AD-related pathology. </p
Departures From Axisymmetric Morphology and Dynamics in Spiral Galaxies
New HI synthesis data have been obtained for six face-on galaxies with the
Very Large Array. These data and reanalyses of three additional data sets make
up a sample of nine face-on galaxies analyzed for deviations from axisymmetry
in morphology and dynamics. This sample represents a subsample of galaxies
already analyzed for morphological symmetry properties in the R-band. Four
quantitative measures of dynamical nonaxisymmetry are compared to one another
and to the quantitative measures of morphological asymmetry in HI and R-band to
investigate the relationships between nonaxisymmetric morphology and dynamics.
We find no significant relationship between asymmetric morphology and most of
the dynamical measures in our sample. A possible relationship is found,
however, between morphology and dynamical position angle differences between
approaching and receding sides of the galaxy.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, AASTeX, accepted for publication in AJ,

A phase I and pharmacokinetic study of intraperitoneal topotecan
Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and pharmacology of intraperitoneal (IP) topotecan. Patients and methods: Fifteen patients with recurrent ovarian cancer in a phase I trial were treated with escalating IP topotecan doses (5–30 mg/m2) for pharmacokinetic analysis. Results: Dose limiting toxicity (DLT) was acute hypotension, chills and fever at the 30 mg/m2 dose level. Haematological toxicity and abdominal pain were mild for all dose levels studied. Pharmacokinetics: Peak plasma levels of total topotecan were reached at 2.7 ± 1.1 h after IP instillation. The apparent V ss was 69.9 ± 25.4 L/m2, plasma clearance 13.4 ± 2.5 L/h/m2 and plasma T1/2 3.7 ± 1.3 h. The plasma AUC was correlated with the dose (R = 0.95, P < 0.01). The plasma AUC ratio of lactone versus total topotecan (lactone + carboxy-forms) increased with the dose from 16% to 55%, (R = 0.84, P < 0.01). Peritoneal total topotecan was cleared from the peritoneal cavity at 0.4 ± 0.3 L/h.m2 with a T1/2 = 2.7 ± 1.7 h. The mean peritoneal/plasma AUC ratio for total topotecan was 54 ± 34. Conclusion: A substantial dose of topotecan can be delivered by the IP route, achieving cytotoxic plasma levels of topotecan, with acceptable toxicity. The recommended dose for further phase II trials is 20 mg/m2 IP, which enables combination with active doses of other cytotoxic drugs, in view of its limited myelotoxicity when given by this route. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Neutral Gas Distribution and Kinematics of the Nearly Face-on Spiral Galaxy NGC 1232
We have analyzed high velocity resolution HI synthesis observations of the
nearly face-on Sc galaxy NGC 1232. The neutral gas distribution extends well
beyond the optical extent of the galaxy. As expected, local peaks in the HI
column density are associated with the spiral arms. Further, the HI column
density drops precipitously near the center of the galaxy. Closed contours in
the velocity field suggest either that the system is warped, or that the
rotation curve declines. The velocity dispersion is approximately constant
throughout the system, with a median value of 9.9 +/- 1.8 km/s. When corrected
for rotational broadening, there is no indication of a radial trend in the
neutral gas velocity dispersion in this galaxy.Comment: 14 pages of text, 10 pages of figures. Accepted to the A
