Microwave photoresistance of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in a triangular antidot lattice
The microwave (MW) photoresistance has been measured on a high-mobility
two-dimensional electron gas patterned with a shallow triangular antidot
lattice, where both the MW-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) and
magnetoplasmon (MP) resonance are observed superposing on sharp commensurate
geometrical resonance (GR). Analysis shows that the MIRO, MP, and GR are

Magnetization-controlled spin transport in DyAs/GaAs layers
Electrical transport properties of DyAs epitaxial layers grown on GaAs have
been investigated at various temperatures and magnetic fields up to 12T. The
measured longitudinal resistances show two distinct peaks at fields around 0.2
and 2.5T which are believed to be related to the strong spin-disorder
scattering occurring at the phase transition boundaries induced by external
magnetic field. An empirical magnetic phase diagram is deduced from the
temperature dependent experiment, and the anisotropic transport properties are
also presented for various magnetic field directions with respect to the

Spatial oscillations in the spontaneous emission rate of an atom inside a metallic wedge
A method of images is applied to study the spontaneous emission of an atom
inside a metallic wedge with an opening angle of , where N is an
arbitrary positive integer. We show the method of images gives a rate formula
consistent with that from Quantum Electrodynamics. Using the method of images,
we show the correspondence between the oscillations in the spontaneous emission
rate and the closed-orbits of emitted photon going away and returning to the
atom inside the wedge. The closed-orbits can be readily constructed using the
method of images and they are also extracted from the spontaneous emission

Effective Mass of the Four Flux Composite Fermion at
We have measured the effective mass () of the four flux composite
fermion at Landau level filling factor (CF), using the
activation energy gaps at the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states
= 2/7, 3/11, and 4/15 and the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov-de
Haas (SdH) oscillations around . We find that the energy gaps show a
linear dependence on the effective magnetic field (), and from this linear dependence we obtain and
a disorder broadening 1 K for a sample of density /cm. The deduced from the temperature dependence of
the SdH effect shows large differences for and . For
, . It scales as with the mass
derived from the data around and shows an increase in as , resembling the findings around . For ,
increases rapidly with increasing and can be described by . This anomalous dependence on is

Kinetic simulations of X-B and O-X-B mode conversion
We have performed fully-kinetic simulations of X-B and O-X-B mode conversion
in one and two dimensional setups using the PIC code EPOCH. We have recovered
the linear dispersion relation for electron Bernstein waves by employing
relatively low amplitude incoming waves. The setups presented here can be used
to study non-linear regimes of X-B and O-X-B mode conversion.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

More specifically certain variables that could be attributed to differences in consumer behaviour were investigated. Mature female clothing shoppers were segmented as clothing moderates, clothing enthusiasts and the clothing unconcerned. These three cluster groups significantly differed regarding clothing involvement, clothing orientation, activities, interests, opinions, family orientation, needs and media usage. No significant differences were found among the three groups regarding evaluative criteria for clothing and clothing store attributes. Profiles of the clusters were developed, along with applicable marketing implications. Evidence for a New Dissipationless Regime in 2D Electronic Transport
In an ultra-clean 2D electron system (2DES) subjected to crossed
millimeterwave (30--150 GHz) and weak (B < 2 kG) magnetic fields, a series of
apparently dissipationless states emerges as the system is detuned from
cyclotron resonances. Such states are characterized by an exponentially
vanishing low-temperature longitudinal resistance and a classical Hall
resistance. The activation energies associated with such states exceeds the
Landau level spacing by an order of magnitude. Our findings are likely
indicative of a collective ground state previously unknown for 2DES.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Case-control study of stroke and the quality of hypertension control in north west England
Objective: To examine the risk of stroke in relation to quality of hypertension control in routine general practice across an entire health district.
Design: Population based matched case-control study.
Setting: East Lancashire Health District with a participating population of 388,821 aged < or = 80.
Subjects: Cases were patients under 80 with their first stroke identified from a population based stroke register between 1 July 1994 and 30 June 1995. For each case two controls matched with the case for age and sex were selected from the same practice register. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure > or = 160 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure > or = 95 mm Hg, or both, on at least two occasions within any three month period or any history of treatment with antihypertensive drugs.
Main outcome measures: Prevalence of hypertension and quality of control of hypertension assessed by using the mean blood pressure recorded before stroke) and odds ratios of stroke (derived from conditional logistic regression).
Results: Records of 267 cases and 534 controls were examined; 61% and 42% of these subjects respectively were hypertensive. Compared with non-hypertensive subjects hypertensive patients receiving treatment whose average pre-event systolic blood pressure was controlled to or = 160 mm Hg) or untreated had progressively raised odds ratios of 1.6, 2.2, 3.2, and 3.5 respectively. Results for diastolic pressure were similar; both were independent of initial pressures before treatment. Around 21% of strokes were thus attributable to inadequate control with treatment, or 46 first events yearly per 100,000 population aged 40-79.
Conclusions: Risk of stroke was clearly related to quality of control of blood pressure with treatment. In routine practice consistent control of blood pressure to below 150/90 mm Hg seems to be required for optimal stroke prevention
Impact of Subleading Corrections on Hadronic B Decays
We study the subleading corrections originating from the 3-parton (q\bar q g)
Fock states of final-state mesons in B decays. The corrections could give
significant contributions to decays involving an \omega or \eta^{(\prime)} in
the final states. Our results indicate the similarity of \omega K and \omega
\pi^- rates, of order 5\times 10^{-6}, consistent with the recent measurements.
We obtain a_2(B\to J/\psi K)\approx 0.27+0.05i, in good agreement with data.
Without resorting to the unknown singlet annihilation effects, 3-parton Fock
state contributions can enhance the branching ratios of K\eta' to the level
