Is the Quantum Hall Effect influenced by the gravitational field?
Most of the experiments on the quantum Hall effect (QHE) were made at
approximately the same height above sea level. A future international
comparison will determine whether the gravitational field
influences the QHE. In the realm of (1 + 2)-dimensional phenomenological
macroscopic electrodynamics, the Ohm-Hall law is metric independent
(`topological'). This suggests that it does not couple to . We
corroborate this result by a microscopic calculation of the Hall conductance in

Making SENSE--Sustained Effort Network for treatment of Status Epilepticus as a multicenter prospective registry.
BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the different treatment options of status epilepticus (SE) in adults is scarce. Large randomized trials cover only one treatment at early stage and suggest the superiority of benzodiazepines over placebo, of intravenous lorazepam over intravenous diazepam or over intravenous phenytoin alone, and of intramuscular midazolam over intravenous lorazepam. However, many patients will not be treated successfully with the first treatment step. A large randomized trial covering the treatment of established status (ESETT) has just been funded recently by the NIH and will not start before 2015, with expected results in 2018; a trial on the treatment of refractory status with general anesthetics was terminated early due to insufficient recruitment. Therefore, a prospective multicenter observational registry was set up; this may help in clinical decision-making until results from randomized trials are available.
METHODS/DESIGN: SENSE is a prospective, multicenter registry for patients treated for SE. The primary objective is to document patient characteristics, treatment modalities and in-house outcome of consecutive adults admitted for SE treatment in each of the participating centres and to identify predictors of outcome. Pre-treatment, treatment-related and outcome variables are documented systematically. To allow for meaningful multivariate analysis in the patient subgroups with refractory SE, a cohort size of 1000 patients is targeted.
DISCUSSION: The results of the study will provide information about risks and benefits of specific treatment steps in different patient groups with SE at different points of time. Thus, it will support clinical decision-making and, furthermore, it will be helpful in the planning of treatment trials.

Quantum Zeno effect and parametric resonance in mesoscopic physics
As a realization of the quantum Zeno effect, we consider electron tunneling
between two quantum dots with one of the dots coupled to a quantum point
contact detector. The coupling leads to decoherence and to the suppression of
tunneling. When the detector is driven with an ac voltage, a parametric
resonance occurs which strongly counteracts decoherence. We propose a novel
experiment with which it is possible to observe both the quantum Zeno effect
and the parametric resonance in electric transport.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
The UK market for energy service contracts in 2014–2015
This paper provides an overview of the UK market for energy service contracts in 2014 and highlights the growing role of intermediaries. Using information from secondary literature and interviews, it identifies the businesses offering energy service contracts, the sectors and organisations that are purchasing those contracts, the types of contract that are available, the areas of market growth and the reasons for that growth. The paper finds that the UK market is relatively large, highly diverse, concentrated in particular sectors and types of site and overwhelmingly focused upon established technologies with high rates of return. A major driver is the emergence of procurement frameworks for energy service contracts in the public sector. These act as intermediaries between clients and contractors, thereby lowering transaction costs and facilitating learning. The market is struggling to become established in commercial offices, largely as a result of split incentives, and is unlikely to develop further in this sector without different business models, tenancy arrangements and policy initiatives. Overall, the paper concludes that energy service contracts can play an important role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, especially when supported by intermediaries, but their potential is still limited by high transaction costs
Evidence for non-linear quasiparticle tunneling between fractional quantum Hall edges
Remarkable nonlinearities in the differential tunneling conductance between
fractional quantum Hall edge states at a constriction are observed in the
weak-backscattering regime. In the = 1/3 state a peak develops as
temperature is increased and its width is determined by the fractional charge.
In the range this width displays a symmetric behavior
around = 1/2. We discuss the consistency of these results with available
theoretical predictions for inter-edge quasiparticle tunneling in the
weak-backscattering regime
Analysis of Shot Noise at Finite Temperatures in Fractional Quantum Hall Edge States
We investigate shot noise at {\it finite temperatures} induced by the
quasi-particle tunneling between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) edge states. The
resulting Fano factor has the peak structure at a certain bias voltage. Such a
structure indicates that quasi-particles are weakly {\it glued} due to thermal
fluctuation. We show that the effect makes it possible to probe the difference
of statistics between FQH states where quasi-particles have the
same unit charge.Finally we propose a way to indirectly obtain statistical

Tricritical behaviour of Ising spin glasses with charge fluctuations
We show that tricritical points displaying unusal behaviour exist in phase
diagrams of fermionic Ising spin glasses as the chemical potential or the
filling assumes characteristic values. Exact results for infinite range
interaction and a one loop renormalization group analysis of thermal
tricritical fluctuations for finite range models are presented. Surprising
similarities with zero temperature transitions and a new tricritical

Staged treatment response in status epilepticus: Lessons from the SENSE registry.
Although in epilepsy patients the likelihood of becoming seizure-free decreases substantially with each unsuccessful treatment, to our knowledge this has been poorly investigated in status epilepticus (SE). We aimed to evaluate the proportion of SE cessation and functional outcome after successive treatment steps.
We conducted a post hoc analysis of a prospective, observational, multicenter cohort (Sustained Effort Network for treatment of Status Epilepticus [SENSE]), in which 1049 incident adult SE episodes were prospectively recorded at nine European centers. We analyzed 996 SE episodes without coma induction before the third treatment step. Rates of SE cessation, mortality (in ongoing SE or after SE control), and favorable functional outcome (assessed with modified Rankin scale) were evaluated after each step.
SE was treated successfully in 838 patients (84.1%), 147 (14.8%) had a fatal outcome (36% of them died while still in SE), and 11 patients were transferred to palliative care while still in SE. Patients were treated with a median of three treatment steps (range 1-13), with 540 (54.2%) receiving more than two steps (refractory SE [RSE]) and 95 (9.5%) more than five steps. SE was controlled after the first two steps in 45%, with an additional 21% treated after the third, and 14% after the fourth step. Likelihood of SE cessation (p < 0.001), survival (p = 0.003), and reaching good functional outcome (p < 0.001) decreased significantly between the first two treatment lines and the third, especially in patients not experiencing generalized convulsive SE, but remained relatively stable afterwards.
The significant worsening of SE prognosis after the second step clinically supports the concept of RSE. However, and differing from findings in human epilepsy, RSE remains treatable in about one third of patients, even after several failed treatment steps. Clinical judgment remains essential to determine the aggressiveness and duration of SE treatment, and to avoid premature treatment cessation in patients with SE
Edge-State Velocity and Coherence in a Quantum Hall Fabry-Perot Interferometer
We investigate nonlinear transport in electronic Fabry-Perot interferometers
in the integer quantum Hall regime. For interferometers sufficiently large that
Coulomb blockade effects are absent, a checkerboard-like pattern of conductance
oscillations as a function of dc bias and perpendicular magnetic field is
observed. Edge-state velocities extracted from the checkerboard data are
compared to model calculations and found to be consistent with a crossover from
skipping orbits at low fields to E x B drift at high fields. Suppression of
visibility as a function of bias and magnetic field is accounted for by

Spin glass behavior in URh_2Ge_2
URh_2Ge_2 occupies an extraordinary position among the heavy-electron
122-compounds, by exhibiting a previously unidentified form of magnetic
correlations at low temperatures, instead of the usual antiferromagnetism. Here
we present new results of ac and dc susceptibilities, specific heat and neutron
diffraction on single-crystalline as-grown URh_2Ge_2. These data clearly
indicate that crystallographic disorder on a local scale produces spin glass
behavior in the sample. We therefore conclude that URh_2Ge_2 is a 3D
