    New results for a photon-photon collider

    We present new results from studies in progress on physics at a two-photon collider. We report on the sensitivity to top squark parameters of MSSM Higgs boson production in two-photon collisions; Higgs boson decay to two photons; radion production in models of warped extra dimensions; chargino pair production; sensitivity to the trilinear Higgs boson coupling; charged Higgs boson pair production; and we discuss the backgrounds produced by resolved photon-photon interactions.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure

    Complex Dynamics and Synchronization of Delayed-Feedback Nonlinear Oscillators

    We describe a flexible and modular delayed-feedback nonlinear oscillator that is capable of generating a wide range of dynamical behaviours, from periodic oscillations to high-dimensional chaos. The oscillator uses electrooptic modulation and fibre-optic transmission, with feedback and filtering implemented through real-time digital-signal processing. We consider two such oscillators that are coupled to one another, and we identify the conditions under which they will synchronize. By examining the rates of divergence or convergence between two coupled oscillators, we quantify the maximum Lyapunov exponents or transverse Lyapunov exponents of the system, and we present an experimental method to determine these rates that does not require a mathematical model of the system. Finally, we demonstrate a new adaptive control method that keeps two oscillators synchronized even when the coupling between them is changing unpredictably.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures.     Isolation of alternative oxidase (AOX) genes of Olea europaea L.

    Alternative oxidase (AOX) is recently suggested to be a potential candidate as functional marker for efficient cell reprogramming under stress (Arnholdt-Schmitt et al., 2006a). The presented work is part of a Marie Curie Chair project, that was established to investigate the potential role of the multigene AOX to assist breeding on efficient rooting of olive shoot cuttings (Arnholdt-Schmitt et al. 2006b). Plant mito-chondrial AOX is a small nuclear-encoded multigene family consisting of the two subfamilies AOX1 and AOX2. The intron-exon structure of AOX has been well characterized in several species, revealing a large degree of conservation. Here we report for the first time about the isolation of AOX multigene se-quences of olive (Olea europaea L.). The genes were isolated from a portuguese clone of the landrace ‘Galega vulgar’

    Guessing probability distributions from small samples

    We propose a new method for the calculation of the statistical properties, as e.g. the entropy, of unknown generators of symbolic sequences. The probability distribution p(k)p(k) of the elements kk of a population can be approximated by the frequencies f(k)f(k) of a sample provided the sample is long enough so that each element kk occurs many times. Our method yields an approximation if this precondition does not hold. For a given f(k)f(k) we recalculate the Zipf--ordered probability distribution by optimization of the parameters of a guessed distribution.     Randomisation of Pulse Phases for Unambiguous and Robust Quantum Sensing

    We develop theoretically and demonstrate experimentally a universal dynamical decoupling method for robust quantum sensing with unambiguous signal identification. Our method uses randomisation of control pulses to suppress simultaneously two types of errors in the measured spectra that would otherwise lead to false signal identification. These are spurious responses due to finite-width π\pi pulses, as well as signal distortion caused by π\pi pulse imperfections. For the cases of nanoscale nuclear spin sensing and AC magnetometry, we benchmark the performance of the protocol with a single nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond against widely used non-randomised pulse sequences. Our method is general and can be combined with existing multipulse quantum sensing sequences to enhance their performance

    The ultracool dwarf DENIS-P J104814.7-395606. Chromospheres and coronae at the low-mass end of the main-sequence

    We have obtained an XMM-Newton observation and a broad-band spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near infrared with X-Shooter for one of the nearest M9 dwarfs, DENIS-P J1048-3956 (4pc). We integrate these data by a compilation of activity parameters for ultracool dwarfs from the literature with the aim to advance our understanding of these objects by comparing them to early-M type dwarf stars and the Sun. Our deep XMM-Newton observation has led to the first X-ray detection of DENIS-P J1048-3956 (log Lx = 25.1) as well as the first measurement of its V band brightness (V = 17.35mag). Flux-flux relations between X-ray and chromospheric activity indicators are here for the first time extended into the regime of the ultracool dwarfs. The approximate agreement of DENIS-P J1048-3956 and other ultracool dwarfs with flux-flux relations for early-M dwarfs suggests that the same heating mechanisms work in the atmospheres of ultracool dwarfs, albeit weaker as judged from their lower fluxes. The observed Balmer decrements of DENIS-P J1048-3956 are compatible with optically thick plasma in LTE at low, nearly photospheric temperature or optically thin LTE plasma at 20000K. Describing the decrements with CaseB recombination requires different emitting regions for Halpha and the higher Balmer lines. The high observed Halpha/Hbeta flux ratio is also poorly fitted by the optically thin models. We derive a similarly high value for the Halpha/Hbeta ratio of vB10 and LHS2065 and conclude that this may be a characteristic of ultracool dwarfs. We add DENIS-P J1048-3956 to the list of ultracool dwarfs detected in both the radio and the X-ray band. The Benz-Guedel relation between radio and X-ray luminosity of late-type stars is well-known to be violated by ultracool dwarfs. We speculate on the presence of two types of ultracool dwarfs with distinct radio and X-ray behavior.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Measurement of miniband parameters of a doped superlattice by photoluminescence in high magnetic fields

    We have studied a 50/50\AA superlattice of GaAs/Al0.21_{0.21}Ga0.79_{0.79}As composition, modulation-doped with Si, to produce n=1.4×1012n=1.4\times 10^{12} cm−2^{-2} electrons per superlattice period. The modulation-doping was tailored to avoid the formation of Tamm states, and photoluminescence due to interband transitions from extended superlattice states was detected. By studying the effects of a quantizing magnetic field on the superlattice photoluminescence, the miniband energy width, the reduced effective mass of the electron-hole pair, and the band gap renormalization could be deduced.Comment: minor typing errors (minus sign in eq.
