    Remediation of chromium(VI) at polypyrrole-coated titanium

    The application of conducting polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PAni) coated substrates in remediation of chromium, Cr(VI), is an area of considerable interest. Here, we discuss the implementation of PPy-coated titanium as a new material for the reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic trivalent state, Cr(III). An alkaline-peroxide based etching process was used to ensure the adhesion of the PPy coatings to the underlying titanium. The PPy films showed excellent resistance to acidic Cr(VI) solutions and remained adherent after continuous exposure to the solutions. In order to optimise the remediation process a number of experimental parameters were investigated, including the thickness of the PPy coating, the reduction potential used in pre-treatment of the PPy and the degree of solution agitation. The durability of the materials on exposure to the Cr(VI) test solutions made them suitable for repeated remediation experiments. Following several test-runs, the cleanup efficiency of the material was found to decrease slightly, however, increasing the exposure/experiment time resulted in significantly improved cleanup ability

    What makes great physical education (PE) teaching? If only it were as simple as reading this article! In 2014, The Sutton Trust reviewed over 200 pieces of research to discover what constitutes great teaching. This is just one piece of evidence-informed research that the Secondary PE PGCE and School Direct course at the University of Worcester is informed by. Coe et al. (2014) acknowledge the extreme difficulties in being able to precisely define effective teaching. However, the focus remains on improving pupil achievement and outcomes. The report identified effective practices, as well as practices that were deemed to be less effective; all of which are grounded in evidence and will be discussed within this article

    Individual leader to interdependent leadership: A case study in leadership development and tripartite evaluation

Copyright @ 2013 Sage Publications.The Problem - In this case study we see a move away from orthodox views of school leadership as “headship” to a more contemporary model of educational leadership wherein we note a departure from functional, curricula-based school leadership toward more human resource development (HRD) approaches. The aim of this study was to consider the effectiveness of an educational development program for middle leaders within an educational establishment. The Solution - We examined the impact of a bespoke higher education leadership development intervention in Leadership (and Change) on the formation and cohesiveness of a newly formed innovative leadership structure. The Stakeholders - The leadership development intervention was designed through a tripartite collaboration including a university, senior school leaders, and staff. The intervention was designed to shift leadership from individual leader agency to interdependent human leadership agency. Through tripartite evaluation we uncover leadership development praxis that transcends the boundaries of conventional educational leadership and reemphasizes the benefits of bridging the academic/practitioner divide and the application of theory to praxis

    Antimicrobial drug usage from birth to 180 days of age in Irish dairy calves and in suckler beef calves

    peer-reviewedConcern about the use of antimicrobials in food producing animals is increasing. The study objective was to quantify antimicrobial drug usage in calves using antimicrobial treatment records from Irish suckler beef and dairy farms. Antimicrobial treatment records for calves born between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015 on 79 suckler beef and 44 dairy farms were analyzed. Calves were followed from birth (day 0) until 6 months of age. According to standard farm protocol, calves exhibiting clinical signs of any disease were identified and antimicrobial treatment was administered. Farmers recorded the following information for each treatment administered: calf identification, age at treatment, disease event, drug name, number of treatment days, and amount of drug administered. In total, 3,204 suckler beef calves and 5,358 dairy calves, representing 540,953 and 579,997 calf-days at risk, respectively, were included in the study. A total of 1,770 antimicrobial treatments were administered to suckler beef (n = 841) and dairy calves (n = 929) between birth and 6 months of age. There was large variation in TIDDDvet and TIDCDvet by farm. This study provides new insights into the time periods and indications for which specific antimicrobial substances are used in Irish dairy and beef suckler calves

    Electrochemical formation of N–substituted polypyrrole nanowires, microwires and open microtubes and their decoration with copper structures

    The substituted pyrrole monomer, N–(2–cyanoethyl)pyrrole, was electropolymerised in a 70% water and 30% ethanol solution with ClO4– and H2PO4– as the dopant species to give nanowires at short electropolymerisation times and microwires at longer deposition periods. On adding toluene to the electropolymerisation solution, hollow microtubes were formed. This was attributed to the adsorption of toluene droplets at the electrode surface which served to separate the dopants from the monomer, with the monomer being highly soluble in the toluene droplet and the inorganic dopants soluble in the water/ethanol mixture. As a result electropolymerisation was confined to the toluene-water/ethanol interface. These polymer systems exhibit redox activity with the oxidation wave centred at about 0.40 V vs SCE, and the broader reduction wave positioned between 0.75 V and 0.25 V vs SCE. Although N-substitution reduces the conductivity of the polymer, various copper deposits, including cubes, leaves and hierarchical structures were deposited at the microwires and microtubes using high overpotentials.     Tyrosine kinase receptor RON functions downstream of the erythropoietin

    Erythropoietin (EPO) is required for cell survival during differentiation and for progenitor expansion during stress erythropoiesis. Although signaling pathways may couple directly to docking sites on the EPO receptor (EpoR), additional docking molecules expand the signaling platform of the receptor. We studied the roles of the docking molecules Grb2-associated binder-1 (Gab1) and Gab2 in EPO-induced signal transduction and erythropoiesis. Inhibitors of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase and Src kinases suppressed EPO-dependent phosphorylation of Gab2. In contrast, Gab1 activation depends on recruitment and phosphorylation by the tyrosine kinase receptor RON, with which it is constitutively associated. RON activation induces the phosphorylation of Gab1, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and protein kinase B (PKB) but not of signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (Stat5). RON activation was sufficient to replace EPO in progenitor expansion but not in differentiation.
