Flexible high-voltage supply for experimental electron microscope

    Get PDF
Scanning microscope uses a field-emission tip for the electron source, an electron gun that simultaneously accelerates and focuses electrons from the source, and one auxiliary lens to produce a final probe size at the specimen on the order of angstroms

Spectrum of the gamma-ray diffuse component observed from HEAO-1

    Get PDF
The spectrum of the diffuse X and gamma ray background was measured between 15 keV and 4 MeV with the scintillation detectors aboard the HEAO 1 satellite. The apertures of the detectors were modulated on time scales of hours and the difference in counting rates measured the diffuse component flux. The observed spectrum is presented and compared with other measurements. At least two components are indicated, one below -100 keV and the other above. Possible origins are discussed

Mixed-State Entanglement and Quantum Teleportation through Noisy Channels

The quantum teleportation with noisy EPR state is discussed. Using an optimal decomposition technique, we compute the concurrence, entanglement of formation and Groverian measure for various noisy EPR resources. It is shown analytically that all entanglement measures reduce to zero when Fˉ≤2/3\bar{F} \leq 2/3, where Fˉ\bar{F} is an average fidelity between Alice and Bob. This fact indicates that the entanglement is a genuine physical resource for the teleportation process. This fact gives valuable clues on the optimal decomposition for higher-qubit mixed states. As an example, the optimal decompositions for the three-qubit mixed states are discussed by adopting a teleportation with W-stateComment: 18 pages, 4 figure

An automatic data system for vibration modal tuning and evaluation

    Get PDF
A digitally based automatic modal tuning and analysis system developed to provide an operational capability beginning at 0.1 hertz is described. The elements of the system, which provides unique control features, maximum operator visibility, and rapid data reduction and documentation, are briefly described; and the operational flow is discussed to illustrate the full range of capabilities and the flexibility of application. The successful application of the system to a modal survey of the Skylab payload is described. Information about the Skylab test article, coincident-quadrature analysis of modal response data, orthogonality, and damping calculations is included in the appendixes. Recommendations for future application of the system are also made

Concurrent Magnetic and Metal-Insulator Transitions in (Eu,Sm)B_6 Single Crystals

    Get PDF
The effects of magnetic doping on a EuB_6 single crystal were investigated based on magnetic and transport measurements. A modest 5% Sm substitution for Eu changes the magnetic and transport properties dramatically and gives rise to concurrent antiferromagnetic and metal-insulator transitions (MIT) from ferromagnetic MIT for EuB6. Magnetic doping simultaneously changes the itinerant carrier density and the magnetic interactions. We discuss the origin of the concurrent magnetic MIT in (Eu,Sm)B_6.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, final version to appear in Appl. Phys. Lett

Spinor Dynamics in an Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Condensate

We observe coherent spin oscillations in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium. The variation of the spin oscillations with magnetic field shows a clear signature of nonlinearity, in agreement with theory, which also predicts anharmonic oscillations near a critical magnetic field. Measurements of the magnetic phase diagram agree with predictions made in the approximation of a single spatial mode. The oscillation period yields the best measurement to date of the sodium spin-dependent interaction coefficient, determining that the difference between the sodium spin-dependent s-wave scattering lengths af=2−af=0a_{f=2}-a_{f=0} is 2.47±0.272.47\pm0.27 Bohr radii.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Changes: added reference, minor correction

Spectra and positions of galactic gamma-ray sources

    Get PDF
The UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and Low Energy Gamma-Ray Experiment aboard HEAO-1 scanned the galactic center region during three epochs in 1977 and 1978 from 13 to 180 keV. The results are presented from the scanning epoch of 1978 September. Twenty-two known 2 to 10 keV source positions were necessary for an acceptable fit to the data. The spectra of the 16 strongest, least confused sources are all consistent with power laws with photon spectral indices ranging from 2.1 to 7.2. Acceptable fits to thermal bremsstrahlung models are also possible for most sources. No one source in this survey can be extrapolated to higher energy to match the intensity of the gamma-ray continuum as measured by HEAO-1 large field of view detectors, which implies that the continuum is a composite of contributions from a number of sources

Reconceptualising Personas Across Cultures: Archetypes, Stereotypes & Collective Personas in Pastoral Namibia

    Get PDF
The paucity of projects where persona is the research foci and a lack of consensus on this artefact keep many reticent about its purpose and value. Besides crafting personas is expected to differ across cultures, which contrasts the advancements in Western theory with studies and progress in other sites. We postulate User-Created Personas reveal specific characteristics of situated contexts by allowing laypeople to design persona artefacts in their own terms. Hence analysing four persona sessions with an ethnic group in pastoral Namibia –ovaHerero– brought up a set of fundamental questions around the persona artefact regarding stereotypes, archetypes, and collective persona representations: (1) to what extent user depictions are stereotypical or archetypal? If stereotypes prime (2) to what degree are current personas a useful method to represent end-users in technology design? And, (3) how can we ultimately read accounts not conforming to mainstream individual persona descriptions but to collectives
