Deep Shading: Convolutional Neural Networks for Screen-Space Shading

    No full text
In computer vision, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently achieved new levels of performance for several inverse problems where RGB pixel appearance is mapped to attributes such as positions, normals or reflectance. In computer graphics, screen-space shading has recently increased the visual quality in interactive image synthesis, where per-pixel attributes such as positions, normals or reflectance of a virtual 3D scene are converted into RGB pixel appearance, enabling effects like ambient occlusion, indirect light, scattering, depth-of-field, motion blur, or anti-aliasing. In this paper we consider the diagonal problem: synthesizing appearance from given per-pixel attributes using a CNN. The resulting Deep Shading simulates all screen-space effects as well as arbitrary combinations thereof at competitive quality and speed while not being programmed by human experts but learned from example images

Analysis of Military Construction Cost Growth in USAF Major Defense Acquisition Programs

This study uses descriptive and inferential statistics to identify cost growth Analysis of Military Construction of military construction (MILCON) at the programmatic level, while bridging the gap between Selected Acquisition Report (SAR) estimates and actual project costs. Findings of this study aid the cost community with appropriate allocation of resources in developing these estimates. Overall, Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAP) appear to experience more negative growth (cost savings) in MILCON estimates on reviewed SARs— typically less than 0.2% of the total program cost. SAR estimates became more accurate from the first to last SAR in comparison to the total MILCON programmed for all projects within a program. However, the last SAR’s median MILCON cost estimate was approximately $31 million underestimated on projects currently authorized and appropriated for MDAPs. Preliminary research was restricted to 32 programs of which only 10 had authorized and accessible projects for comparison. Initial results suggest building on this exploratory analysis

Analytic Solution of Emden-Fowler Equation and Critical Adsorption in Spherical Geometry

In the framework of mean-field theory the equation for the order-parameter profile in a spherically-symmetric geometry at the bulk critical point reduces to an Emden-Fowler problem. We obtain analytic solutions for the surface universality class of extraordinary transitions in d=4d=4 for a spherical shell, which may serve as a starting point for a pertubative calculation. It is demonstrated that the solution correctly reproduces the Fisher-de Gennes effect in the limit of the parallel-plate geometry.Comment: (to be published in Z. Phys. Delineating Operating and Support Costs in Aircraft Platforms

    Get PDF
As the costs of Department of Defense (DoD) Weapon Systems increase, the ability to estimate the Operating and Support (O&S) costs accurately for the various weapon systems has become vital to long-term affordability. This research focuses on the O&S costs of the Air Force fixed-wing arsenal (i.e., platforms) for 1996–2016. First, the Cost Element Structure (CES) for 52 aircraft platforms and seven operational mission categories is analyzed to derive the descriptive statistics per aircraft category through examination of actual historical costs. Second, testing to identify statistical differences within the O&S CES construct across various Air Force aircraft categories is conducted. DoD cost estimators and stakeholders alike can benefit from this research by utilizing the results as cross-checks for predicting O&S costs through analogous-based estimates and as an in-depth analysis into categories of CES costs being incurred

The Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Quark Self Energy and Hadron Bags

    Get PDF
The chromo-dielectric soliton model (CDM) is Lorentz- and chirally-invariant. It has been demonstrated to exhibit dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and spatial confinement in the locally uniform approximation. We here study the full nonlocal quark self energy in a color-dielectric medium modeled by a two parameter Fermi function. Here color confinement is manifest. The self energy thus obtained is used to calculate quark wave functions in the medium which, in turn, are used to calculate the nucleon and pion masses in the one gluon exchange approximation. The nucleon mass is fixed to its empirical value using scaling arguments; the pion mass (for massless current quarks) turns out to be small but non-zero, depending on the model parameters.Comment: 24 pages, figures available from the author

Aging in ferromagnetic systems at criticality near four dimensions

We study the off-equilibrium response and correlation functions and the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation ratio for a purely dissipative relaxation of an O(N) symmetric vector model (Model A) below its upper critical dimension. The scaling behavior of these quantities is analyzed and the associated universal functions are determined at first order in epsilon expansion in the high-temperature phase and at criticality. A non trivial limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is found in the aging regime.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
