    In two recent articles [PRL 90, 026802 (2003); PRB 69, 085307 (2004)], we developed a transport theory for an extended tunnel junction between two interacting fractional-quantum-Hall edge channels, obtaining analytical results for the conductance. Ponomarenko and Averin (PA) have expressed disagreement with our theoretical approach and question the validity of our results (cond-mat/0602532).     Coulomb drag between one-dimensional conductors

    We have analyzed Coulomb drag between currents of interacting electrons in two parallel one-dimensional conductors of finite length LL attached to external reservoirs. For strong coupling, the relative fluctuations of electron density in the conductors acquire energy gap MM. At energies larger than Γ=const×vexp(LM/v)/L+Γ+\Gamma = const \times v_- \exp (-LM/v_-)/L + \Gamma_{+}, where Γ+\Gamma_{+} is the impurity scattering rate, and for L>v/ML>v_-/M, where vv_- is the fluctuation velocity, the gap leads to an ``ideal'' drag with almost equal currents in the conductors. At low energies the drag is suppressed by coherent instanton tunneling, and the zero-temperature transconductance vanishes, indicating the Fermi liquid behavior.Comment: 5 twocolumn pages in RevTex, added 1 eps-Figure and calculation of trans-resistanc

    Detecting synchronization of self-sustained oscillators by external driving with varying frequency

    We propose a method for detecting the presence of synchronization of self-sustained oscillator by external driving with linearly varying frequency. The method is based on a continuous wavelet transform of the signals of self-sustained oscillator and external force and allows one to distinguish the case of true synchronization from the case of spurious synchronization caused by linear mixing of the signals. We apply the method to driven van der Pol oscillator and to experimental data of human heart rate variability and respiration.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Dynamical oscillations in nonlinear optical media

    The spatial dynamics of pulses in Kerr media with parabolic index profile are examined. It is found that when diffraction and graded-index have opposite signs propagating pulses exhibit an oscillatory pattern, similar to a breathing behavior. Furthermore, if the pulse and the index profile are not aligned the pulse oscillates around the index origin with frequency that depends on the values of the diffraction and index of refraction. These oscillations are not observed when diffraction and graded-index share the same sign

    EpitopeViewer: a Java application for the visualization and analysis of immune epitopes in the Immune Epitope Database and Analysis Resource (IEDB)

    BACKGROUND: Structural information about epitopes, particularly the three-dimensional (3D) structures of antigens in complex with immune receptors, presents a valuable source of data for immunology. This information is available in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and provided in curated form by the Immune Epitope Database and Analysis Resource (IEDB). With continued growth in these data and the importance in understanding molecular level interactions of immunological interest there is a need for new specialized molecular visualization and analysis tools. RESULTS: The EpitopeViewer is a platform-independent Java application for the visualization of the three-dimensional structure and sequence of epitopes and analyses of their interactions with antigen-specific receptors of the immune system (antibodies, T cell receptors and MHC molecules). The viewer renders both 3D views and two-dimensional plots of intermolecular interactions between the antigen and receptor(s) by reading curated data from the IEDB and/or calculated on-the-fly from atom coordinates from the PDB. The 3D views and associated interactions can be saved for future use and publication. The EpitopeViewer can be accessed from the IEDB Web site through the quick link 'Browse Records by 3D Structure.' CONCLUSION: The EpitopeViewer is designed and been tested for use by immunologists with little or no training in molecular graphics. The EpitopeViewer can be launched from most popular Web browsers without user intervention. A Java Runtime Environment (RJE) 1.4.2 or higher is required
