College Students and Beliefs in the American Dream: The Impact of Race, Class, and Gender

The concept of the American Dream and its promises of prosperity and social mobility, primarily through hard work, has been prevalent throughout modern U.S. history. However, what defines the American Dream has been arbitrary and varied, and research has shown that attitudes and beliefs surrounding the Dream have changed over time with shifts in the economic and political environments. The research for this thesis uses qualitative methods, specifically thematic analysis, to analyze 16 in-depth, one-on-one interviews to examine how students attending a predominantly white university in the Southeastern United States perceive the American Dream today while factoring in how those perceptions are affected by the social statuses of participants. Findings suggest that regardless of social location, most participants still believed the American Dream was attainable through hard work and determination, despite obstacles individuals faced, including intersecting statuses. Black students, compared with white students, however, were more likely to acknowledge the structural barriers involved in obtaining the Dream

As a studio artist and a creative writer, I contemplated what would happen if I utilized the principles of fine art in the application of the written word. If I became the subject of the written word, could I formulate the telling of my story in such a way that a reader could find themselves sculpted within its pages? Eight Pieces of Pie tells my story, that as a single woman at the age of forty-three years, eight months and six days, I discovered I was unavailable. I delved back to my first memories to discover how my emotional unavailability formed, how it perpetuated, and how I engaged in unhealthy relationships with unavailable men in the areas of spiritual, geographical, mental, legal, sexual, additive, financial, and emotional unavailability. Eight Pieces of pie tells the story and how I broke through my sabotaging behavior to a healthy life with healthy relationships

Photofading of Black Dyes in Cotton and Polyester Fibers Resulting from Environmental Exposure to Sunlight

Color is one of the most important properties analyzed during forensic fiber examinations due to its discriminatory power. Differing colors in fibers are usually sufficient grounds for exclusion, but in cases where a lengthy period has passed between crime commission and evidence recovery, the high probability of environmental degradation having altered the questioned fibers’ properties could lead to false exclusions. Photofading, the loss of color resulting from exposure to light, is a common form of degradation observed in fibers. Although well-known in the dyeing industry, it is not typically factored into forensic fiber examinations. Published photofading research has been limited to idealized simulations involving dye solutions rather than dyed textiles, and studies with dyed textiles have focused on cellulosic fibers and non-black dyes despite the prevalence of manufactured and black fibers. This study investigated photofading in black cotton and polyester fibers that were exposed to sunlight in various environments over a 3.5-month period. The objective was to determine how fiber type and environmental conditions impacted the rate of photofading. Results of a control experiment indicated that photofading rates were dependent on the strength of fiber-dye interactions (which is predicated on the chemical properties of both) rather than fiber type alone. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 during the later stages of research, results for the environmental exposure experiment were unable to be gathered. A discussion of the expected results is presented instead, along with possibilities for future photofading studies and the greater forensic implications that such work may have

THE ASSESSMENT OF COLLEGE FEMALE ATHLETES’ PERSPECTIVES ON THEIR COACHES’ DISCUSSION ON FOOD RELATIONSHIPS AND BODY POSITIVITY

    Get PDF
This study examined the differences in how often college female athletes’ coaches discussed food relationships and body positivity with how often the college female athletes wished their coaches discussed food relationships and body positivity. I hypothesized that the coaches’ discussions of food relationships and body positivity did not meet the expectations of the college female athletes. Twenty-six participants from Southeastern University in a population of female athletes completed an online survey that produced quantitative data to determine the discrepancy. The survey consisted of three main topics of eating habits, eating disorders, body positivity, and their relationship building with their coaches. The results concluded that the coaches were meeting the expectations of the athletes in the categories of eating habits, body positivity, and in their relationship building. However, the results for the topic of eating disorders were insignificant. Thus, the coaches appear to have discussed these topics positively and constructed positive relationships with their athletes
