Closed-loop recycling of plastics enabled by dynamic covalent diketoenamine bonds.
Recycled plastics are low-value commodities due to residual impurities and the degradation of polymer properties with each cycle of re-use. Plastics that undergo reversible polymerization allow high-value monomers to be recovered and re-manufactured into pristine materials, which should incentivize recycling in closed-loop life cycles. However, monomer recovery is often costly, incompatible with complex mixtures and energy-intensive. Here, we show that next-generation plastics-polymerized using dynamic covalent diketoenamine bonds-allow the recovery of monomers from common additives, even in mixed waste streams. Poly(diketoenamine)s 'click' together from a wide variety of triketones and aromatic or aliphatic amines, yielding only water as a by-product. Recovered monomers can be re-manufactured into the same polymer formulation, without loss of performance, as well as other polymer formulations with differentiated properties. The ease with which poly(diketoenamine)s can be manufactured, used, recycled and re-used-without losing value-points to new directions in designing sustainable polymers with minimal environmental impact
Neural precursor cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells exhibit reduced susceptibility to infection with a neurotropic coronavirus.
The present study examines the susceptibility of mouse induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural precursor cells (iPSC-NPCs) to infection with the neurotropic JHM strain of mouse hepatitis virus (JHMV). Similar to NPCs derived from striatum of day 1 postnatal GFP-transgenic mice (GFP-NPCs), iPSC-derived NPCs (iPSC-NPCs) are able to differentiate into terminal neural cell types and express MHC class I and II in response to IFN-γ treatment. However, in contrast to postnatally-derived NPCs, iPSC-NPCs express low levels of carcinoembryonic antigen-cell adhesion molecule 1a (CEACAM1a), the surface receptor for JHMV, and are less susceptible to infection and virus-induced cytopathic effects. The relevance of this in terms of therapeutic application of NPCs resistant to viral infection is discussed
Standard Error of Empirical Bayes Estimate in NONMEM® VI.
The pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics analysis software NONMEM® output provides model parameter estimates and associated standard errors. However, the standard error of empirical Bayes estimates of inter-subject variability is not available. A simple and direct method for estimating standard error of the empirical Bayes estimates of inter-subject variability using the NONMEM® VI internal matrix POSTV is developed and applied to several pharmacokinetic models using intensively or sparsely sampled data for demonstration and to evaluate performance. The computed standard error is in general similar to the results from other post-processing methods and the degree of difference, if any, depends on the employed estimation options
Stability of Filters for the Navier-Stokes Equation
Data assimilation methodologies are designed to incorporate noisy
observations of a physical system into an underlying model in order to infer
the properties of the state of the system. Filters refer to a class of data
assimilation algorithms designed to update the estimation of the state in a
on-line fashion, as data is acquired sequentially. For linear problems subject
to Gaussian noise filtering can be performed exactly using the Kalman filter.
For nonlinear systems it can be approximated in a systematic way by particle
filters. However in high dimensions these particle filtering methods can break
down. Hence, for the large nonlinear systems arising in applications such as
weather forecasting, various ad hoc filters are used, mostly based on making
Gaussian approximations. The purpose of this work is to study the properties of
these ad hoc filters, working in the context of the 2D incompressible
Navier-Stokes equation. By working in this infinite dimensional setting we
provide an analysis which is useful for understanding high dimensional
filtering, and is robust to mesh-refinement. We describe theoretical results
showing that, in the small observational noise limit, the filters can be tuned
to accurately track the signal itself (filter stability), provided the system
is observed in a sufficiently large low dimensional space; roughly speaking
this space should be large enough to contain the unstable modes of the
linearized dynamics. Numerical results are given which illustrate the theory.
In a simplified scenario we also derive, and study numerically, a stochastic
PDE which determines filter stability in the limit of frequent observations,
subject to large observational noise. The positive results herein concerning
filter stability complement recent numerical studies which demonstrate that the
ad hoc filters perform poorly in reproducing statistical variation about the
true signal

One-step volumetric additive manufacturing of complex polymer structures.
Two limitations of additive manufacturing methods that arise from layer-based fabrication are slow speed and geometric constraints (which include poor surface quality). Both limitations are overcome in the work reported here, introducing a new volumetric additive fabrication paradigm that produces photopolymer structures with complex nonperiodic three-dimensional geometries on a time scale of seconds. We implement this approach using holographic patterning of light fields, demonstrate the fabrication of a variety of structures, and study the properties of the light patterns and photosensitive resins required for this fabrication approach. The results indicate that low-absorbing resins containing ~0.1% photoinitiator, illuminated at modest powers (~10 to 100 mW), may be successfully used to build full structures in ~1 to 10 s
Brown Dwarfs in the Pleiades Cluster Confirmed by the Lithium Test
We present 10 m Keck spectra of the two Pleiades brown dwarfs Teide 1 and
Calar 3 showing a clear detection of the 670.8 nm Li resonance line. In Teide
1, we have also obtained evidence for the presence of the subordinate line at
812.6 nm. A high Li abundance (log N(Li) >= 2.5), consistent with little if any
depletion, is inferred from the observed lines. Since Pleiades brown dwarfs are
unable to burn Li the significant preservation of this fragile element confirms
the substellar nature of our two objects. Regardless of their age, their low
luminosities and Li content place Teide 1 and Calar 3 comfortably in the
genuine brown dwarf realm. Given the probable age of the Pleiades cluster,
their masses are estimated at 55 +- 15 Jupiter masses.Comment: 14 pages gzipped and uuencoded. Figures are included. Also available

Layer-Resolved Ultrafast XUV Measurement of Hole Transport in a Ni-TiO2-Si Photoanode
Metal-oxide-semiconductor junctions are central to most electronic and
optoelectronic devices. Here, the element-specificity of broadband extreme
ultraviolet (XUV) ultrafast pulses is used to measure the charge transport and
recombination kinetics in each layer of a Ni-TiO2-Si junction. After
photoexcitation of silicon, holes are inferred to transport from Si to Ni
ballistically in ~100 fs, resulting in spectral shifts in the Ni M2,3 XUV edge
that are characteristic of holes and the absence of holes initially in TiO2.
Meanwhile, the electrons are observed to remain on Si. After picoseconds, the
transient hole population on Ni is observed to back-diffuse through the TiO2,
shifting the Ti spectrum to higher oxidation state, followed by electron-hole
recombination at the Si-TiO2 interface and in the Si bulk. Electrical
properties, such as the hole diffusion constant in TiO2 and the initial hole
mobility in Si, are fit from these transient spectra and match well with values
