Massive Fields and the 2D String

    Get PDF
The first massive level of closed bosonic string theory is studied. Free-field equations are derived by imposing Weyl invariance on the world sheet. A two-parameter solution to the equation of motion and constraints is found in two dimensions with a flat linear-dilaton background. One-to-one tachyon scattering is studied in this background. The results support Dhar, Mandal and Wadia's proposal that 2D critical string theory corresponds to the c=1 matrix model in which both sides of the Fermi sea are excited.Comment: 17 pages, Latex. Generating Functional for Gauge Invariant Actions: Examples of Nonrelativistic Gauge Theories

We propose a generating functional for nonrelativistic gauge invariant actions. In particular, we consider actions without the usual magnetic term. Like in the Born-Infeld theory, there is an upper bound to the electric field strength in these gauge theories.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures; v2: misprints correcte

Physical Mechanism of the d->d+is Transition

We discuss the basic physical mechanism of the d->d+is transition, which is the currently accepted explanation for the results of tunneling experiments into abab planes. Using the first-order perturbation theory, we show that the zero-bias states drive the transition. We present various order-of-magnitude estimates and consistency checks that support this picture.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Detecting multi-atomic composite states in optical lattices

We propose and discuss methods for detecting quasi-molecular complexes which are expected to form in strongly interacting optical lattice systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the detection of composite fermions forming in Bose-Fermi mixtures. We argue that, as an indirect indication of the composite fermions and a generic consequence of strong interactions, periodic correlations must appear in the atom shot noise of bosonic absorption images, similar to the bosonic Mott insulator [S. F\"olling, et al., Nature {\bf 434}, 481 (2005)]. The composites can also be detected directly and their quasi-momentum distribution measured. This method -- an extension of the technique of noise correlation interferometry [E. Altman et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 79}, 013603 (2004)] -- relies on measuring higher order correlations between the bosonic and fermionic shot noise in the absorption images. However, it fails for complexes consisting of more than three atoms.Comment: 9 revtex page

Bose Einstein Condensation in solid 4He

We have computed the one--body density matrix rho_1 in solid 4He at T=0 K using the Shadow Wave Function (SWF) variational technique. The accuracy of the SWF has been tested with an exact projector method. We find that off-diagonal long range order is present in rho_1 for a perfect hcp and bcc solid 4He for a range of densities above the melting one, at least up to 54 bars. This is the first microscopic indication that Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC) is present in perfect solid 4He. At melting the condensate fraction in the hcp solid is 5*10^{-6} and it decreases by increasing the density. The key process giving rise to BEC is the formation of vacancy--interstitial pairs. We also present values for Leggett's upper bound on the superfluid fraction deduced from the exact local density.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review

Two-photon correlations as a sign of sharp transition in quark-gluon plasma

    Get PDF
The photon production arising due to time variation of the medium has been considered. The Hamilton formalism for photons in time-variable medium (plasma) has been developed with application to inclusive photon production. The results have been used for calculation of the photon production in the course of transition from quark-gluon phase to hadronic phase in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The relative strength of the effect as well as specific two- photon correlations have been evaluated. It has been demonstrated that the opposite side two-photon correlations are indicative of the sharp transition from the quark-gluon phase to hadrons.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figure

Andreev reflection from non-centrosymmetric superconductors and Majorana bound state generation in half-metallic ferromagnets

We study Andreev reflection at an interface between a half metal and a superconductor with spin-orbit interaction. While the absence of minority carriers in the half metal makes singlet Andreev reflection impossible, the spin-orbit interaction gives rise to triplet Andreev reflection, i.e., the reflection of a majority electron into a majority hole or vice versa. As an application of our calculation, we consider a thin half metal film or wire laterally attached to a superconducting contact. If the half metal is disorder free, an excitation gap is opened that is proportional to the spin-orbit interaction strength in the superconductor. For electrons with energy below this gap a lateral half-metal--superconductor contact becomes a perfect triplet Andreev reflector. We show that the system supports localized Majorana end states in this limit.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
