Toxicity of secondary compounds to the seed-eating larvae of the bruchid beetle Callosobruchus maculatus
By incorporating various secondary compounds in the normal diet of larval Callosobruchus maculatus bruchids, we show that the effects of any particular compound are dosage-dependent. Alkaloids are generally the most toxic of the compounds tested. Non-protein amino acids are more toxic than protein amino acids but the latter can be toxic at 1 and 5% incorporation in the diet. The non-protein amino acid homoarginine has a salutary effect on larval survival at low concentrations. A variety of other secondary compounds found in seeds are toxic at various levels representative of those levels found in seeds in nature, and for all secondary compounds tested a 0.1-5% incorporation in the diet often has a detrimental effect on production of adult beetles. We conclude that many of the secondary compounds found in seeds are likely to be toxic to at least some animal, and thus are likely to be responsible at least in part for the extreme host-specifity shown by seed-eating insects.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23041/1/0000612.pd
Charge Symmetry Breaking in 500 MeV Nucleon-Trinucleon Scattering
Elastic nucleon scattering from the 3He and 3H mirror nuclei is examined as a
test of charge symmetry violation. The differential cross-sections are
calculated at 500 MeV using a microsopic, momentum-space optical potential
including the full coupling of two spin 1/2 particles and an exact treatment of
the Coulomb force. The charge-symmetry-breaking effects investigated arise from
a violation within the nuclear structure, from the p-nucleus Coulomb force, and
from the mass-differences of the charge symmetric states. Measurements likely
to reveal reliable information are noted.Comment: 5 page
Charge-Symmetry Violation in Pion Scattering from Three-Body Nuclei
We discuss the experimental and theoretical status of charge-symmetry
violation (CSV) in the elastic scattering of pi+ and pi- on 3H and 3He.
Analysis of the experimental data for the ratios r1, r2, and R at Tpi = 142,
180, 220, and 256 MeV provides evidence for the presence of CSV. We describe
pion scattering from the three-nucleon system in terms of single- and
double-scattering amplitudes. External and internal Coulomb interactions as
well as the Delta-mass splitting are taken into account as sources of CSV.
Reasonable agreement between our theoretical calculations and the experimental
data is obtained for Tpi = 180, 220, and 256 MeV. For these energies, it is
found that the Delta-mass splitting and the internal Coulomb interaction are
the most important contributions for CSV in the three-nucleon system. The CSV
effects are rather sensitive to the choice of pion-nuclear scattering
mechanisms, but at the same time, our theoretical predictions are much less
sensitive to the choice of the nuclear wave function. It is found, however,
that data for r2 and R at Tpi = 142 MeV do not agree with the predictions of
our model, which may indicate that there are additional mechanisms for CSV

Impact of Scotland’s comprehensive, smoke-free legislation on stroke
<p>Background: Previous studies have reported a reduction in acute coronary events following smoke-free legislation.
Evidence is lacking on whether stroke is also reduced. The aim was to determine whether the incidence of stroke, overalland by sub-type, fell following introduction of smoke-free legislation across Scotland on 26 March 2006.</p>
<p>Methods and Findings: A negative binomial regression model was used to determine whether the introduction of smokefree legislation resulted in a step and/or slope change in stroke incidence. The model was adjusted for age-group, sex, socioeconomic deprivation quintile, urban/rural residence and month. Interaction tests were also performed. Routine hospital administrative data and death certificates were used to identify all hospital admissions and pre-hospital deaths due to stroke (ICD10 codes I61, I63 and I64) in Scotland between 2000 and 2010 inclusive. Prior to the legislation, rates of all stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage and unspecified stroke were decreasing, whilst cerebral infarction was increasing at 0.97% per annum. Following the legislation, there was a dramatic fall in cerebral infarctions that persisted for around 20
months. No visible effect was observed for other types of stroke. The model confirmed an 8.90% (95% CI 4.85, 12.77,
p,0.001) stepwise reduction in cerebral infarction at the time the legislation was implemented, after adjustment for
potential cofounders.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Following introduction of national, comprehensive smoke-free legislation there was a selective reduction in cerebral infarction that was not apparent in other types of stroke.</p>
Viewing Nature Scenes Positively Affects Recovery of Autonomic Function Following Acute-Mental Stress
A randomized crossover study explored whether viewing different scenes prior to a stressor altered autonomic function during the recovery from the stressor. The two scenes were (a) nature (composed of trees, grass, fields) or (b) built (composed of man-made, urban scenes lacking natural characteristics) environments. Autonomic function was assessed using noninvasive techniques of heart rate variability; in particular, time domain analyses evaluated parasympathetic activity, using root-mean-square of successive differences (RMSSD). During stress, secondary cardiovascular markers (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure) showed significant increases from baseline which did not differ between the two viewing conditions. Parasympathetic activity, however, was significantly higher in recovery following the stressor in the viewing scenes of nature condition compared to viewing scenes depicting built environments (RMSSD; 50.0 ± 31.3 vs 34.8 ± 14.8 ms). Thus, viewing nature scenes prior to a stressor alters autonomic activity in the recovery period. The secondary aim was to examine autonomic function during viewing of the two scenes. Standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDRR), as change from baseline, during the first 5 min of viewing nature scenes was greater than during built scenes. Overall, this suggests that nature can elicit improvements in the recovery process following a stressor. © 2013 American Chemical Society
Pion interaction with the trinucleon up to the eta production threshold
Pion elastic, charge exchange scattering and induced eta production on the
trinucleon systems are investigated in a coupled-channels approach in momentum
space with Fadeev wave functions. The channel is
included using an isobar model with S-, P-, and D-wave resonances. While the
coherent reactions like He(He can be reasonably well reproduced
up to =500 MeV, large discrepancies appear for the incoherent
processes, He(H and He(H at backward
angles and energies above -resonance. In the forward direction the
calculations underestimate the experimental measurements very
close to threshold but agreement with the data improves with increasing pion
energy. Predictions are made for the asymmetries of the various reactions on

Neutron structure function and inclusive DIS from H-3 and He-3 at large Bjorken-x
A detailed study of inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from mirror A =
3 nuclei at large values of the Bjorken variable x is presented. The main
purpose is to estimate the theoretical uncertainties on the extraction of the
neutron DIS structure function from such nuclear measurements. On one hand,
within models in which no modification of the bound nucleon structure functions
is taken into account, we have investigated the possible uncertainties arising
from: i) charge symmetry breaking terms in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, ii)
finite Q**2 effects neglected in the Bjorken limit, iii) the role of different
prescriptions for the nucleon Spectral Function normalization providing baryon
number conservation, and iv) the differences between the virtual nucleon and
light cone formalisms. Although these effects have been not yet considered in
existing analyses, our conclusion is that all these effects cancel at the level
of ~ 1% for x < 0.75 in overall agreement with previous findings. On the other
hand we have considered several models in which the modification of the bound
nucleon structure functions is accounted for to describe the EMC effect in DIS
scattering from nuclei. It turns out that within these models the cancellation
of nuclear effects is expected to occur only at a level of ~ 3%, leading to an
accuracy of ~ 12 % in the extraction of the neutron to proton structure
function ratio at x ~ 0.7 -0.8$. Another consequence of considering a broad
range of models of the EMC effect is that the previously suggested iteration
procedure does not improve the accuracy of the extraction of the neutron to
