Group study of an 'undercover' test for visuospatial neglect: Invisible cancellation can reveal more neglect than standard cancellation
Visual neglect is a relatively common deficit after brain damage, particularly strokes. Cancellation tests provide standard clinical measures of neglect severity and deficits in daily life. A recent single-case study introduced a new variation on standard cancellation. Instead of making a visible mark on each target found, the patient made invisible marks (recorded with carbon paper underneath, for later scoring). Such invisible cancellation was found to reveal more neglect than cancellation with visible marks. Here we test the generality of this. Twenty three successive cases with suspected neglect each performed cancellation with visible or invisible marks. Neglect of contralesional targets was more pronounced with invisible marks. Indeed, about half of the patients only showed neglect in this version. For cases showing more neglect with invisible marks, stronger neglect of contralesional targets correlated with more revisits to ipsilesional targets for making additional invisible marks upon them. These results indicate that cancellation with invisible marks can reveal more neglect than standard cancellation with visible marks, while still providing a practical bedside test. Our observations may be consistent with recent proposals that demands on spatial working memory (required to keep track of previously found items only when marked invisibly) can exacerbate spatial neglect
General covariance, and supersymmetry without supersymmetry
An unusual four-dimensional generally covariant and supersymmetric SU(2)
gauge theory is described. The theory has propagating degrees of freedom, and
is invariant under a local (left-handed) chiral supersymmetry, which is half
the supersymmetry of supergravity. The Hamiltonian 3+1 decomposition of the
theory reveals the remarkable feature that the local supersymmetry is a
consequence of Yang-Mills symmetry, in a manner reminiscent of how general
coordinate invariance in Chern-Simons theory is a consequence of Yang-Mills
symmetry. It is possible to write down an infinite number of conserved
currents, which strongly suggests that the theory is classically integrable. A
possible scheme for non-perturbative quantization is outlined. This utilizes
ideas that have been developed and applied recently to the problem of
quantizing gravity.Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX, two minor errors correcte
Probing entropy bounds with scalar field spacetimes
We study covariant entropy bounds in dynamical spacetimes with naked
singularities. Specifically we study a spherically symmetric massless scalar
field solution. The solution is an inhomogeneous cosmology with an initial
spacelike singularity, and a naked timelike singularity at the origin. We
construct the entropy flux 4-vector for the scalar field, and show by explicit
computation that the generalized covariant bound is violated for light sheets in the neighbourhood of the (evolving)
apparent horizon. We find no violations of the Bousso bound (for which
), even though certain sufficient conditions for this bound do not
hold. This result therefore shows that these conditions are not necessary.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; published version with typos correcte
Two dimensional general covariance from three dimensions
A 3d generally covariant field theory having some unusual properties is
described. The theory has a degenerate 3-metric which effectively makes it a 2d
field theory in disguise. For 2-manifolds without boundary, it has an infinite
number of conserved charges that are associated with graphs in two dimensions
and the Poisson algebra of the charges is closed. For 2-manifolds with boundary
there are additional observables that have a Kac-Moody Poisson algebra. It is
further shown that the theory is classically integrable and the general
solution of the equations of motion is given. The quantum theory is described
using Dirac quantization, and it is shown that there are quantum states
associated with graphs in two dimensions.Comment: 10 pages (Latex), Alberta-Thy-19-9
Spherically symmetric scalar field collapse in any dimension
We describe a formalism and numerical approach for studying spherically
symmetric scalar field collapse for arbitrary spacetime dimension d and
cosmological constant Lambda. The presciption uses a double null formalism, and
is based on field redefinitions first used to simplify the field equations in
generic two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The formalism is used to construct
code in which d and Lambda are input parameters. The code reproduces known
results in d = 4 and d = 6 with Lambda = 0. We present new results for d = 5
with zero and negative Lambda.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected, presentational changes, PRD in

Constants of motion for vacuum general relativity
The 3+1 Hamiltonian Einstein equations, reduced by imposing two commuting
spacelike Killing vector fields, may be written as the equations of the
principal chiral model with certain `source' terms. Using this
formulation, we give a procedure for generating an infinite number of non-local
constants of motion for this sector of the Einstein equations. The constants of
motion arise as explicit functionals on the phase space of Einstein gravity,
and are labelled by sl(2,R) indices.Comment: 10 pages, latex, version to appear in Phys. Rev. D
Holographic repulsion and confinement in gauge theory
We show that for asymptotically anti-deSitter backgrounds with negative
energy, such as the AdS soliton and regulated negative mass AdS-Schwarzshild
metrics, the Wilson loop expectation value in the AdS/CFT conjecture exhibits a
Coulomb to confinement transition. We also show that the quark-antiquark () potential can be interpreted as affine time along null geodesics on
the minimal string world sheet, and that its intrinsic curvature provides a
signature of transition to confinement phase. The result demonstrates a UV/IR
relation in that the boundary separation of the pair exhibits an
inverse relationship with the radial descent of the world sheet into the bulk.
Our results suggest a generic (holographic) relationship between confinement in
gauge theory and repulsive gravity, which in turn is connected with singularity
avoidance in quantum gravity.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
