On the Spectrum and Nature of the Peculiar Type Ia Supernova 1991T
A parameterized supernova synthetic-spectrum code is used to study line
identifications in the photospheric-phase spectra of the peculiar Type Ia SN
1991T, and to extract some constraints on the composition structure of the
ejected matter. The inferred composition structure is not like that of any
hydrodynamical model for Type Ia supernovae. Evidence that SN 1991T was
overluminous for an SN Ia is presented, and it is suggested that this peculiar
event probably was a substantially super-Chandrasekhar explosion that resulted

Non-hermitean delocalization in an array of wells with variable-range widths
Nonhermitean hamiltonians of convection-diffusion type occur in the
description of vortex motion in the presence of a tilted magnetic field as well
as in models of driven population dynamics. We study such hamiltonians in the
case of rectangular barriers of variable size. We determine Lyapunov exponent
and wavenumber of the eigenfunctions within an adiabatic approach, allowing to
reduce the original d=2 phase space to a d=1 attractor. PACS

Specialized mouse embryonic stem cells for studying vascular development.
Vascular progenitor cells are desirable in a variety of therapeutic strategies; however, the lineage commitment of endothelial and smooth muscle cell from a common progenitor is not well-understood. Here, we report the generation of the first dual reporter mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines designed to facilitate the study of vascular endothelial and smooth muscle development in vitro. These mESC lines express green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the endothelial promoter, Tie-2, and Discomsoma sp. red fluorescent protein (RFP) under the promoter for alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). The lines were then characterized for morphology, marker expression, and pluripotency. The mESC colonies were found to exhibit dome-shaped morphology, alkaline phosphotase activity, as well as expression of Oct 3/4 and stage-specific embryonic antigen-1. The mESC colonies were also found to display normal karyotypes and are able to generate cells from all three germ layers, verifying pluripotency. Tissue staining confirmed the coexpression of VE (vascular endothelial)-cadherin with the Tie-2 GFP+ expression on endothelial structures and smooth muscle myosin heavy chain with the α-SMA RFP+ smooth muscle cells. Lastly, it was verified that the developing mESC do express Tie-2 GFP+ and α-SMA RFP+ cells during differentiation and that the GFP+ cells colocalize with the vascular-like structures surrounded by α-SMA-RFP cells. These dual reporter vascular-specific mESC permit visualization and cell tracking of individual endothelial and smooth muscle cells over time and in multiple dimensions, a powerful new tool for studying vascular development in real time
Scaling Theory of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladder Models
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on multi-leg ladders is
investigated. Criticality of the ground-state transition is explored by means
of finite-size scaling. The ladders with an even number of legs and those with
an odd number of legs are distinguished clearly. In the former, the energy gap
opens up as , where is the strength of the
antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. In the latter, the critical phase with

Effects of kinked linear defects on planar flux line arrays
In the hard core limit, interacting vortices in planar type II
superconductors can be modeled as non-interacting one dimensional fermions
propagating in imaginary time. We use this analogy to derive analytical
expressions for the probability density and imaginary current of vortex lines
interacting with an isolated bent line defect and to understand the pinning
properties of such systems. When there is an abrupt change of the direction of
the pinning defect, we find a sinusoidal modulation of the vortex density in
directions both parallel and perpendicular to the defect.Comment: 13 figure
On the Use of Optimized Monte Carlo Methods for Studying Spin Glasses
We start from recently published numerical data by Hatano and Gubernatis
cond-mat/0008115 to discuss properties of convergence to equilibrium of
optimized Monte Carlo methods (bivariate multi canonical and parallel
tempering). We show that these data are not thermalized, and they lead to an
erroneous physical picture. We shed some light on why the bivariate multi

Non-Hermitian Delocalization and Eigenfunctions
Recent literature on delocalization in non-Hermitian systems has stressed
criteria based on sensitivity of eigenvalues to boundary conditions and the
existence of a non-zero current. We emphasize here that delocalization also
shows up clearly in eigenfunctions, provided one studies the product of left-
and right-eigenfunctions, as required on physical grounds, and not simply the
squared modulii of the eigenfunctions themselves. We also discuss the right-
and left-eigenfunctions of the ground state in the delocalized regime and
suggest that the behavior of these functions, when considered separately, may

Correct extrapolation of overlap distribution in spin glasses
We study in d=3 dimensions the short range Ising spin glass with Jij=+/-1
couplings at T=0. We show that the overlap distribution is non-trivial in the

Quasi-bound states in continuum
We report the prediction of quasi-bound states (resonant states with very
long lifetimes) that occur in the eigenvalue continuum of propagating states
for a wide region of parameter space. These quasi-bound states are generated in
a quantum wire with two channels and an adatom, when the energy bands of the
two channels overlap. A would-be bound state that lays just below the upper
energy band is slightly destabilized by the lower energy band and thereby
becomes a resonant state with a very long lifetime (a second QBIC lays above
