Pressure-control purge panel for automatic butt welding
Modification of a purge panel for use in an automatic butt weld reduces the drop in pressure between the regulators and the weld head and tube purge fitting. The invention affects air regulators for plants, regulating circuits for pneumatic valves, and automatic welding machines
Durable solid lubricant coatings for foil gas bearings to 315 deg C
The durability and friction characteristics of bonded solid lubricant films on compliant gas bearings were measured. Coating compositions, which were judged to be suitable for use to at least 315 C, were selected for this study. Most of the data were obtained with polyimide-bonded graphite fluoride coatings and with silicate-bonded graphite coatings. These coatings were applied to the bore of Inconel 750 foil bearings. The journals were A286 stainless steel, with a rms surface finish of 0.2 microns. The foils were subjected to repeated start/stop cycles under a 14 kPa (2 psi) bearing unit load. Sliding contact occurred during lift-off and coast down at surface velocities less than 6 m/s (3000 rpm). Testing continued until 9000 cycles were accumulated or until a rise in starting torque indicated that the coating had failed. The coatings were evaluated in the temperature range from 25 C to 315 C. Comparisons in coating performance as well as discussions of their properties and methods of application are given
Effects of silver and group 2 fluorides addition to plasma sprayed chromium carbide high temperature solid lubricant for foil gas bearing to 650 deg C
A new self-lubricating coating composition of nickel aluminide-bonded chromium carbide formulated with silver and Group II fluorides was developed in a research program on high temperature solid lubricants. One of the proposed applications for this new coating composition is as a wide temperature spectrum solid lubricant for complaint foil gas bearings. Friction and wear properties were obtained using a foil gas bearing start/stop apparatus at temperatures from 25 to 650 C. The journals were Inconel 718. Some were coated with the plasma sprayed experimental coating, others with unmodified nickel aluminide/chromium carbide as a baseline for comparison. The addtitional components were provided to assist in achieving low friction over the temperature range of interest. Uncoated, preoxidized Inconel X-750 foil bearings were operated against these surfaces. The foils were subjected to repeated start/stop cycles under a 14-kPa (2-psi) bearing unit loading. Sliding contact occurred during lift-off and coastdown at surface velocities less than 6 m/s (3000 rpm). Testing continued until 9000 start/stop cycles were accumulated or until a rise in starting torque indicated the journal/bearing had failed. Exact results for Casimir interactions between dielectric bodies: The weak-coupling or van der Waals Limit
In earlier papers we have applied multiple scattering techniques to calculate
Casimir forces due to scalar fields between different bodies described by delta
function potentials. When the coupling to the potentials became weak,
closed-form results were obtained. We simplify this weak-coupling technique and
apply it to the case of tenuous dielectric bodies, in which case the method
involves the summation of van der Waals (Casimir-Polder) interactions. Once
again exact results for finite bodies can be obtained. We present closed
formulas describing the interaction between spheres and between cylinders, and
between an infinite plate and a retangular slab of finite size. For such a
slab, we consider the torque acting on it, and find non-trivial equilibrium

Results of special mechanical analyses of Luna 16 material
The studies carried out on the Luna 16 regolith have confirmed the data that were already published internationally. By means of activation analysis under irradiation in the reactor, activation analysis with a 14 MeV U-generator, and mass spectroscopy on samples of 10 or 20 mg, six main and 63 trace elements were quantitatively determined and compared with known data
Reactivation of the mitosis-promoting factor in postmitotic cardiomyocytes
Cardiomyocytes cease to divide shortly after birth and an irreversible cell cycle arrest is evident accompanied by the downregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase activities. To get a better understanding of the cardiac cell cycle and its regulation, the effect of functional recovery of the mitosis-promoting factor (MPF) consisting of cyclin B1 and the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdc2 was assessed in primary cultures of postmitotic ventricular adult rat cardiomyocytes ( ARC). Gene transfer into ARC was achieved using the adenovirus-enhanced transferrinfection system that was characterized by the absence of cytotoxic events. Simultaneous ectopic expression of wild-type versions of cyclin B1 and Cdc2 was sufficient to induce MPF activity. Reestablished MPF resulted in a mitotic phenotype, marked by an abnormal condensation of the nuclei, histone H3 phosphorylation and variable degree of decay of the contractile apparatus. Although a complete cell division was not observed, the results provided conclusive evidence that cell cycle-related events in postmitotic cardiomyocytes could be triggered by genetic intervention downstream of the G1/S checkpoint. This will be of importance to design novel strategies to overcome the proliferation arrest in adult cardiomyocytes
Search for Higgs Bosons in SUSY Cascade Decays and Neutralino Dark Matter
The Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) is a well
motivated theoretical framework, which contains an extended Higgs sector,
including a light Higgs with Standard Model-like properties in most of the
parameter space. Due to the large QCD background, searches for such a Higgs,
decaying into a pair of bottom quarks, is very challenging at the LHC. It has
been long realized that the situation may be ameliorated by searching for Higgs
bosons in supersymmetric decay chains. Moreover, it has been recently suggested
that the bobber decay channel may be observed in standard production channels
by selecting boosted Higgs bosons, which may be easily identified from the QCD
background. Such boosted Higgs bosons are frequent in the MSSM, since they are
produced from decays of heavy colored supersymmetric particles. Previous works
have emphasized the possibility of observing boosted Higgs bosons in the light
higgsino region. In this work, we study the same question in the regions of
parameter space consistent with a neutralino dark matter relic density,
analyzing its dependence on the non-standard Higgs boson, slepton and squark
masses, as well as on the condition of gaugino mass unification. In general, we
conclude that, provided sleptons are heavier than the second lightest
neutralinos, the presence of boosted Higgs is a common MSSM feature, implying
excellent prospects for observation of the light MSSM Higgs boson in the near

An H-Theorem for the Lattice Boltzmann Approach to Hydrodynamics
The lattice Boltzmann equation can be viewed as a discretization of the
continuous Boltzmann equation. Because of this connection it has long been
speculated that lattice Boltzmann algorithms might obey an H-theorem. In this
letter we prove that usual nine-velocity models do not obey an H-theorem but
models that do obey an H-theorem can be constructed. We consider the general
conditions a lattice Boltzmann scheme must satisfy in order to obey an
H-theorem and show why on a lattice, unlike the continuous case, dynamics that
decrease an H-functional do not necessarily lead to a unique ground state.Comment: 6 pages, latex, no figures, accepted for publication in Europhys.
