Scalable Unix Commands for Parallel Processors: A High-Performance Implementation

We describe a family of MPI applications we call the Parallel Unix Commands. These commands are natural parallel versions of common Unix user commands such as ls, ps, and find, together with a few similar commands particular to the parallel environment. We describe the design and implementation of these programs and present some performance results on a 256-node Linux cluster. Zwei Punkte stechen bis jetzt heraus: Protektionismus und eine expansive Fiskalpolitik. Protektionismus würde einen langsameren Wachstumspfad für die US-amerikanische Wirtschaft implizieren, eine expansive Fiskalpolitik mit Steuersenkungen und einer starken Erhöhung der Infrastrukturausgaben würde, allerdings nur kurzfristig, das Gegenteil bedeuten

Demographie und Einwanderung

Die demographischen Effekte sind in Ostdeutschland viel drastischer als in Westdeutschland und viel gravierender auf dem Land als in der Stadt. Die Bevölkerung in Ostdeutschland schrumpft schneller als im Westen, und sie wird immer älter. Manchen Regionen droht die Entvölkerung. Nach Prognosen des Statistischen Bundesamts ist im Jahr 2030 jeder dritte Ostdeutsche 65 Jahre und älter. Der Umgang mit diesem Problem, gerade im Osten, wird in meinen Augen die größte Herausforderung der nächsten Jahrzehnte sein

Domain-decomposed preconditionings for transport operators

The performance was tested of five different interface preconditionings for domain decomposed convection diffusion problems, including a novel one known as the spectral probe, while varying mesh parameters, Reynolds number, ratio of subdomain diffusion coefficients, and domain aspect ratio. The preconditioners are representative of the range of practically computable possibilities that have appeared in the domain decomposition literature for the treatment of nonoverlapping subdomains. It is shown that through a large number of numerical examples that no single preconditioner can be considered uniformly superior or uniformly inferior to the rest, but that knowledge of particulars, including the shape and strength of the convection, is important in selecting among them in a given problem

Trumps Bilanz nach sechs Monaten

Nach einem halben Jahr im Amt hat die Unsicherheit über Donald Trumps wirtschaftspolitisches Programm ein wenig abgenommen. Bei seiner Wahl hatte ich an dieser Stelle noch argumentiert, das wirtschaftspolitische Programm des künftigen Präsidenten sei 'schemenhaft und widersprüchlich.' Der Protektionismus und die expansive Fiskalpolitik würden gegeneinander wirken, das erstere tendenziell das Wirtschaftswachstum verlangsamen, das zweite es (zumindest kurzfristig) erhöhen. Nach sechs Monaten kann man sagen: Keins von beidem ist tatsächlich so eingetreten wie befürchtet/erwartet

A Multilevel Approach to Topology-Aware Collective Operations in Computational Grids

The efficient implementation of collective communiction operations has received much attention. Initial efforts produced "optimal" trees based on network communication models that assumed equal point-to-point latencies between any two processes. This assumption is violated in most practical settings, however, particularly in heterogeneous systems such as clusters of SMPs and wide-area "computational Grids," with the result that collective operations perform suboptimally. In response, more recent work has focused on creating topology-aware trees for collective operations that minimize communication across slower channels (e.g., a wide-area network). While these efforts have significant communication benefits, they all limit their view of the network to only two layers. We present a strategy based upon a multilayer view of the network. By creating multilevel topology-aware trees we take advantage of communication cost differences at every level in the network. We used this strategy to implement topology-aware versions of several MPI collective operations in MPICH-G2, the Globus Toolkit[tm]-enabled version of the popular MPICH implementation of the MPI standard. Using information about topology provided by MPICH-G2, we construct these multilevel topology-aware trees automatically during execution. We present results demonstrating the advantages of our multilevel approach by comparing it to the default (topology-unaware) implementation provided by MPICH and a topology-aware two-layer implementation.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

Deposit insurance, moral hazard and market monitoring

The paper analyses the relationship between deposit insurance, debt-holder monitoring, and risk taking. In a stylised banking model we show that deposit insurance may reduce moral hazard, if deposit insurance credibly leaves out non-deposit creditors. Testing the model using EU bank level data yields evidence consistent with the model, suggesting that explicit deposit insurance may serve as a commitment device to limit the safety net and permit monitoring by uninsured subordinated debt holders. We further find that credible limits to the safety net reduce risk taking of smaller banks with low charter values and sizeable subordinated debt shares only. However, we also find that the introduction of explicit deposit insurance tends to increase the share of insured deposits in banks’ liabilities

Bank Concentration and Retail Interest Rates

The recent wave of mergers in the euro area raises the question, whether the increase in concentration has at least in part offset the increase in competition in European banking through deregulation. We test this question by estimating a simple Cournot model of bank pricing. We construct country and product specific measures of bank concentration and find that for loans and demand deposits, increasing concentration may have resulted in less competitive pricing by banks, whereas for savings and time deposits, the model is rejected, suggesting increases in contestability and/ or efficiency in these markets. Finanzforschung in Halle: Passt das?

Das IWH hat in den letzten Jahren seine Kapazitäten in der Finanzforschung stark ausgebaut: Eine eigene Abteilung mit mehr als 20 Forschern wurde eingerichtet, darunter zwei W3- und demnächst vier W1-Professuren. Darüber hinaus stellt das IWH eine Datenbank und einen Forschungshub zum Thema 'International Banking' zur Verfügung. Andere Aktivitäten, zum Beispiel im Bereich Industrieökonomik oder Stadtökonomik, wurden deutlich reduziert, um Ressourcen für die neuen Aktivitäten freizumachen
