    Visuo-spatial abilities and geometry: a first proposal of a theoretical framework for interpreting processes of visualization.

    We propose a theoretical interpretation of visuo-spatial abilities, as classified in the field of Cognitive Psychology, in the domain of Euclidean Geometry. In this interpretation we make use of Fischbein’s theory of figural concepts and of Duval’s cognitive apprehensions. Our interpretation lays the foundations for a new theoretical framework that we propose as a tool for qualitative analysis of students’ processes of visualization as they carry out geometrical activities. In particular, we present analyses of excerpts from a set of activities designed and proposed in a didactical intervention aimed at strengthening visuo-spatial abilities of a group of students identified as the weakest from a selected 9th grade class of an Italian high school

    Enhancing the Skill of Geometric Prediction Using Dynamic Geometry

    This study concerns geometric prediction, a process of anticipation that has been identified as key in mathematical reasoning, and its possible constructive relationship with explorations within a Dynamic Geometry Environment (DGE). We frame this case study within Fischbein’s Theory of Figural Concepts and, to gain insight into a solver’s conceptual control over a geometrical figure, we introduce a set of analytical tools that include: the identification of the solver’s geometric predictions, theoretical and phenomenological evidence that s/he may seek for, and the dragging modalities s/he makes use of in the DGE. We present fine-grained analysis of data collected during a clinical interview as a high school student reasons about a geometrical task, first on paper-and-pencil, and then in a DGE.     Approaching Proof in the Classroom Through the Logic of Inquiry

    The paper analyses a basic gap, highlighted by most of the literature concerning the teaching of proofs, namely, the distance between students' argumentative and proving processes. The analysis is developed from both epistemological and cognitive standpoints: it critiques the Toulmin model of reasoning and introduces a new model, the Logic of Inquiry of Hintikka, more suitable for bridging this gap. An example of didactical activity within Dynamic Geometry Environments is sketched in order to present a concrete illustration of this approach and to show the pedagogical effectiveness of the model

    Nociceptors: a phylogenetic view

    The ability to react to environmental change is crucial for the survival of an organism and an essential prerequisite is the capacity to detect and respond to aversive stimuli. The importance of having an inbuilt “detect and protect” system is illustrated by the fact that most animals have dedicated sensory afferents which respond to noxious stimuli called nociceptors. Should injury occur there is often sensitization, whereby increased nociceptor sensitivity and/or plasticity of nociceptor-related neural circuits acts as a protection mechanism for the afflicted body part. Studying nociception and nociceptors in different model organisms has demonstrated that there are similarities from invertebrates right through to humans. The development of technology to genetically manipulate organisms, especially mice, has led to an understanding of some of the key molecular players in nociceptor function. This review will focus on what is known about nociceptors throughout the Animalia kingdom and what similarities exist across phyla; especially at the molecular level of ion channels

    Optimized cross-layer forward error correction coding for H.264 AVC video transmission over wireless channels

    Forward error correction (FEC) codes that can provide unequal error protection (UEP) have been used recently for video transmission over wireless channels. These video transmission schemes may also benefit from the use of FEC codes both at the application layer (AL) and the physical layer (PL). However, the interaction and optimal setup of UEP FEC codes at the AL and the PL have not been previously investigated. In this paper, we study the cross-layer design of FEC codes at both layers for H.264 video transmission over wireless channels. In our scheme, UEP Luby transform codes are employed at the AL and rate-compatible punctured convolutional codes at the PL. In the proposed scheme, video slices are first prioritized based on their contribution to video quality. Next, we investigate the four combinations of cross-layer FEC schemes at both layers and concurrently optimize their parameters to minimize the video distortion and maximize the peak signal-to-noise ratio. We evaluate the performance of these schemes on four test H.264 video streams and show the superiority of optimized cross-layer FEC design.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin
