The potential of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas (L.) Lamb) as a dual purpose crop in semi-arid crop/livestock systems in Kenya

    Get PDF
Investigates production characteristics, forage quality and animal production potential of some selected Kenyan sweet potato accessions for inclusion into crop/livestock production systems. Presents and discusses results of experiments on fibrous root development and tuber development and vine quality. Includes data on chemical composition of vines after 210 days from planting and chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of rations. Examines the effect of vines and cottnseed cake supplementation on DM intake and calf growth rates

African forage plant genetic resources, evaluation of forage germplasm and extensive livestock production systems. Proceedings of the third PANESA workshop

    Get PDF
This proceeding report is divided in three sessions. In the first session papers on African forage plant genetic resources in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and the PANESA region are presented. The second session discusses forage germplasm evaluation. In this session experiences of ILCA, Tanzania, Mauritius, Uganda, Malawi, Ethiopia and Kenya are presented. Species involved in the studies included Brachiaria, Cynodon, Trifolium, Lablab, Zornia, Stylosanthes and Crotalaria. The third session deals with extensive livestock production systems. Experiences from Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Nigeria and Ethiopia are examined

Animal feed resources for small-scale livestock producers. Proceedings of the second PANESA workshop

    Get PDF
Presents papers on inventory of animal feed resources in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Burundi, Madagascar, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique, research and development experiences in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Zimbabwe; socioeconomic aspects of feed resources; and regional/sub-regional research programmes

Nutritive value of Crotalaria ochroleuca: I. Chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility at different stages of growth

    Get PDF
Reports on the initial stages of a work carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of Crotalaria ochroleuca (marejea). Determines dry matter yield, chemical composition and invitro dry matter digestibility. Examines DM & OM contents and yields, chemical compostion with whole plant, leaf and stem and in vitro DM digestibility of plant parts of "marejea" with advanced plant growth

Utilization of research results on forage and agricultural by-product materials as animal feed resources in Africa. Proceedings of the first joint workshop

    Get PDF
Presents and discusses research results on feed resources, agroindustrial by-products utilisation, forage production, use of crop residues, dairy feeding systems, feeding strategies, introduction and adoption of improved forage technologies, nutritive value of different forages, effects of management on animal performance, effect of supplements on feed utilisation, potential of agricultural by-products as animal feeds, and effects of management on pasture grasses & legumes; and evaluates the utilisation of these results by smallholders

The Pasture Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (PANESA): Its regional collaborative research programme

The Pastures Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (PANESA) deals with forage and other feed resource development in sub-Saharan Africa. Emphasis is placed on forage germplasm evaluation and seeking entry-points of forage resources into mixed crop-livestock smallholder farmer production systems. Operational focus is on the arid/semi-arid, humid/sub-humid and highlands zones of eastern and southern Africa. The net-works mandate seek to improve the research capabilities of national institutions so as to alleviate dry season feed resources shortages. The rationale for the network's formation, country membership, mode of operation and coverage of its collaborative research programme are discussed

Value of a forage legume component in summer beef fattening systems in Malawi

A study conducted to investigate the beef production potential of a Rhodes grass pasture fertilized with inorganic N and grown in association with D. Uncinatum. Includes data on dry matter yields of pure and mixed pastures (Rhodes + Desmodium), soil N status before and after three seasons of treatment, and liveiweight gains per ha and number of grazing days/season
