The Climate Change Impact on the Glaciers of Georgia

The article reviews the changes of the glacier basins characteristics of Georgia glaciers due to the current climate change. Calculations show significant decrease of the area and number of the glaciers in Georgia over the last 50 years. This reduction is more intensive in eastern Georgia in comparison with the western part of the country. At the same time, some large glaciers complete melting dates are determined according to one of the basic scenarios of current climate change, namely the business as usual. Based on the calculations it is concluded that viewed large glaciers complete melting is not expected within this century even in this worst conditions scenario

Research of Abkhazian glacier retreat in the context of ongoing climate change using satellite remote sensing

დედამიწაზე არსებული გარემოს სისტემებიდან მყინვარები ყველაზე მეტად მოწყვლადია კლიმატის მიმდინარე ცვლილების ზემოქმედების მიმართ. ამდენად, მათი დეგრადაცია თვალსაჩინოდ ასახავს კლიმატის ცვლილების სიჩქარეს. მყინვარებზე თანამედროვე კლიმატის ცვლილების გავლენის მეცნიერულად შესწავლის ერთადერთი გზა არის მაღალი გარჩევადობის თანამგზავრული დისტანციური ზონდირების (თდზ) გამოყენება, რადგან ეს ტექნოლოგია საშუალებას იძლევა ერთდროულად იყოს განხილული მყინვარების მდგომარეობა დიდ ფართობებზე. აფხაზეთის ავტონომიურ რესპუბლიკაში არსებული მყინვარების თანამედროვე მდგომარეობის შესწავლა ადგილობრივი გლაციოლოგიური სკოლის არარსებობის გამო და დღევანდელი პოლიტიკური მდგომარეობის გათვალისწინებით, მით უმეტეს აუცილებელია თდზ-ის საშუალებით. მაღალი გარჩევადობის თდზ-ის გამოყენებით აფხაზეთის მყინვარების უკანდახევის კვლევა არის ამ სამუშაოს ძირითადი მიზანი. დიდი მყინვარის უკანდახევის გარდა განისაზღვრება მყინვარის სრული დნობის თარიღი გარკვეული კლიმატური სცენარის ფარგლებში.Glaciers are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change on all the ecological systems that exist on Earth. Thus, their degradation reflects the rate of climate change. The only way to scientifically study the impact ofmodern climate change on glaciers is to use high-resolution satellite remote sensing (SRS) since this technology allows you to simultaneously study the state of glaciers over large areas. The study of the current state of glaciers inthe Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia due to the lack of a local glaciological school and taking into account the current political situation the study of the glaciers must be carried out by SRS. The research of the retreat of the Abkhazian glaciers using high-resolution SRS is the main goal of this work. In addition to the retreat of a large glacier, an approximate date is determined for the complete melting of the glacier within a certain climate scenario
