Density Functional Theory for Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystals
Even though chiral nematic phases were the first liquid crystals
experimentally observed more than a century ago, the origin of the
thermodynamic stability of cholesteric states is still unclear. In this Letter
we address the problem by means of a novel density functional theory for the
equilibrium pitch of chiral particles. When applied to right-handed hard
helices, our theory predicts an entropy-driven cholesteric phase, which can be
either right- or left-handed, depending not only on the particle shape but also
on the thermodynamic state. We explain the origin of the chiral ordering as an
interplay between local nematic alignment and excluded-volume differences
between left- and right-handed particle pairs
Phase diagrams of charged colloidal rods: can a uniaxial charge distribution break chiral symmetry?
We construct phase diagrams for charged rodlike colloids within the
second-virial approximation as a function of rod concentration, salt
concentration, and colloidal charge. Besides the expected isotropic-nematic
transition, we also find parameter regimes with a coexistence between a nematic
and a second, more highly aligned nematic phase including an
isotropic-nematic-nematic triple point and a nematic-nematic critical point,
which can all be explained in terms of the twisting effect. We compute the
Frank elastic constants to see if the twist elastic constant can become
negative, which would indicate the possibility of a cholesteric phase
spontaneously forming. Although the twisting effect reduces the twist elastic
constant, we find that it always remains positive. In addition, we find that
for finite aspect-ratio rods the twist elastic constant is also always
positive, such that there is no evidence of chiral symmetry breaking due to a
uniaxial charge distribution.Comment: Added a reference to Sec. 4 and extended discussions in Secs. 4 and

Early weight bearing in tibial plateau fractures treated with ORIF: a systematic review of literature
Background: To review the current clinical evidence on advantages and risks of early weight bearing (EWB) after internal fixation for tibial plateau fracture.
Methods: Data source: PubMed and Google Scholar from inception of database to 20 August 2021, using PRISMA guidelines. The included studies were randomized controlled trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies, case reports. Data extraction was performed independently by 2 reviewers. Collected data were compared to verify agreement. Statistical analysis was not performed in this study.
Results: The literature search produced 174 papers from PubMed and 186 from Google Scholar, with a total amount of 360 papers. The two reviewers excluded 301 papers by title or duplicates. Of the 59 remaining, 33 were excluded after reading the abstract, and 17 by reading the full text. Thus, 9 papers were finally included in the review.
Conclusions: EWB can be considered safe and effective in selected cases after internal fixation for tibial plateau fractures. Level of evidence Therapeutic Level III
