Andrew Melville, sacred chronology and world history: the Carmina Danielis 9 and the Antichristus
The accepted view of the ecclesiastical reformer Andrew Melville (1545–1622) as the dynamic leader of the Presbyterian movement in Jacobean Scotland has been severely eroded in recent years, with particular criticism of the actual importance of his contribution to the Kirk and to Scottish higher education. While this reductionism has been necessary, it has resulted in an inversion of the overwhelmingly positive traditional image of Melville, and does not give us a rounded assessment of his life and works. This article attempts to partially redress this balance by looking at a neglected aspect of Melville's Latin writings, which showcase his talents as a humanist intellectual and biblical commentator. It focuses on two long poems that are both commentaries and paraphrases of Daniel and Revelation: the Carmina Danielis and the Antichristus. Through these poems, we see how Melville engaged with two problems exercising reformed theologians across Europe: the dating of key biblical events and the historicised meaning of prophecies within these texts. We also find evidence that Melville read widely among both contemporary and ancient commentators on both these issues
Competitiveness Indices for Irish Manufactured Exports. Quarterly Economic Commentary Special Article, July 1981
This paper is devoted primarily to the construction of competitiveness
indices for Irish manufactured exports. Our principal motivation in
conducting such an exercise is the fact that no satisf a,ctory measures of
competitiveness have as yet been developed for Ireland despite which the
concept of competitiveness, and the problems assoicated with declining
competitiveness in particular, frequently figure in public discussions of
Ireland's economic performance. This concern is exemplified, for instance, by
the fact that it is a recurring theme in the Quarterly Bulletins and Annual
Reports of the Central Bank
Sectoral Changes in the Labour Force over the Period 1961-1980 with Particular Reference to Public Sector and Services Employment. Special Article in Quarterly Economic Commentary, Winter 2015
A knowledge of the significant changes which have been taking place in the
sectoral composition of employment is fundamental to a proper understanding
of the recent evolution of the labour force. This paper traces the changes in the
numbers at work in broad sectors of the Irish economy over the period
1961-80. The basic information is given in Appendix I, Table A which
contains an annual sectoral subdivision under four broad headings (Agriculture,
Manufacturing, Building and Services); Tables 1 and lA following show
these data for selected years* in this period with a somewhat more detailed
sectoral subdivision, the second table giving absolute and relative employment
changes by sector for the 1961/1971 and 1971/1979 periods
Private Sector Credit, Policy and Enforcement: 1978-1982. Quarterly Economic Commentary Special Article, May 1983
This paper is concerned with exammmg certain aspects of the Central
Bank's quantitative credit guidelines over the period 1978 to 1982. The
sectoral or personal lending guidelines are not considered in this paper. The
approach is to consider first the policy aspects to the guidelines and in
particular the relationship between the guideline and the external reserve
objective. Secondly, the issue of neutralization of interest rates is discussed and
some evidence is presented on this matter. Finally, the paper examines how
Central Bank enforcement may act as an indicator of the existence and timing
of credit rationing and concludes by demonstrating how policy and
enforcement combined to cause a reduction in the Associated Banks' relative
lending share
Noise spectroscopy and interlayer phase-coherence in bilayer quantum Hall systems
Bilayer quantum Hall systems develop strong interlayer phase-coherence when
the distance between layers is comparable to the typical distance between
electrons within a layer. The phase-coherent state has until now been
investigated primarily via transport measurements. We argue here that
interlayer current and charge-imbalance noise studies in these systems will be
able to address some of the key experimental questions. We show that the
characteristic frequency of current-noise is that of the zero wavevector
collective mode, which is sensitive to the degree of order in the system. Local
electric potential noise measured in a plane above the bilayer system on the
other hand is sensitive to finite-wavevector collective modes and hence to the
soft-magnetoroton picture of the order-disorder phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Export Tourism Input-Output Multipliers for Ireland. Quarterly Economic Commentary Special Article, May 1982
This paper focuses on some difficulties involved in the interpretation of
earlier studies and goes on to calculate upper bound estimates of some of the
principal economic effects of Irish export tourism in 1976. The 1976 input-output
data of Henry (1980) form the basis for the calculations herein

Joule-assisted silicidation for short-channel silicon nanowire devices
We report on a technique enabling electrical control of the contact
silicidation process in silicon nanowire devices. Undoped silicon nanowires
were contacted by pairs of nickel electrodes and each contact was selectively
silicided by means of the Joule effect. By a realtime monitoring of the
nanowire electrical resistance during the contact silicidation process we were
able to fabricate nickel-silicide/silicon/nickel- silicide devices with
controlled silicon channel length down to 8 nm.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
