Quasiperiodicity and non-computability in tilings
We study tilings of the plane that combine strong properties of different
nature: combinatorial and algorithmic. We prove existence of a tile set that
accepts only quasiperiodic and non-recursive tilings. Our construction is based
on the fixed point construction; we improve this general technique and make it
enforce the property of local regularity of tilings needed for
quasiperiodicity. We prove also a stronger result: any effectively closed set
can be recursively transformed into a tile set so that the Turing degrees of
the resulted tilings consists exactly of the upper cone based on the Turing

Diffractive Dissociation and Eikonalization in High Energy pp and p Collisions
We show that eikonal corrections imposed on diffraction dissociation
processes calculated in the triple Regge limit, produce a radical change in the
energy dependence of the predicted cross section. The induced correction is
shown to be in general agreement with the new experimental data measured at the

Drug-induced alterations in tumour perfusion yield increases in tumour cell radiosensitivity
The perfusion of human tumour xenografts was manipulated by administration of diltiazem and pentoxifylline, and the extent that observed changes in tumour perfusion altered tumour radiosensitivity was determined. 2 tumour systems having intrinsically different types of hypoxia were studied. The responses of SiHa tumours, which have essentially no transient hypoxia, were compared to the responses of WiDr tumours, which contain chronically and transiently hypoxic cells. We found that relatively modest increases in net tumour perfusion increased tumour cell radiosensitivity in WiDr tumours to a greater extent than in SiHa tumours. Moreover, redistribution of blood flow within WiDr tumours was observed on a micro-regional level that was largely independent of changes in net tumour perfusion. Through fluorescence-activated cell sorting coupled with an in vivo–in vitro cloning assay, increases in the radiosensitivity of WiDr tumour cells at intermediate levels of oxygenation were observed, consistent with the expectation that a redistribution of tumour blood flow had increased oxygen delivery to transiently hypoxic tumour cells. Our data therefore suggest that drug-induced changes in tumour micro-perfusion can alter the radiosensitivity of transiently hypoxic tumour cells, and that increasing the radiosensitivity of tumour cells at intermediate levels of oxygenation is therapeutically relevant. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign   http://www.bjcancer.co
Update on the ICUD-SIU consultation on multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging in localised prostate cancer
Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) imaging is a rapidly evolving field. Dramatic improvements in prostate MRI during the last decade will probably change the accuracy of diagnosis. This chapter reviews recent current evidence about MRI diagnostic performance and impact on PCa management. Materials and methods: The International Consultation on Urological Diseases nominated a committee to review the literature on prostate MRI. A search of the PubMed database was conducted to identify articles focussed on MP-MRI detection and staging protocols, reporting and scoring systems, the role of MP-MRI in diagnosing PCa prior to biopsy, in active surveillance, in focal therapy and in detecting local recurrence after treatment. Results: Differences in opinion were reported in the use of the strength of magnets [1.5 Tesla (T) vs. 3T] and coils. More agreement was found regarding the choice of pulse sequences; diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI), dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI), and/or MR spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) are recommended in addition to conventional T2-weighted anatomical sequences. In 2015, the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS version 2) was described to standardize image acquisition and interpretation. MP-MRI improves detection of clinically significant PCa (csPCa) in the repeat biopsy setting or before the confirmatory biopsy in patients considering active surveillance. It is useful to guide focal treatment and to detect local recurrences after treatment. Its role in biopsy-naive patients or during the course of active surveillance remains debated. Conclusion: MP-MRI is increasingly used to improve detection of csPCa and for the selection of a suitable therapeutic approach
Low efficacy of the combination artesunate plus amodiaquine for uncomplicated falciparum malaria among children under 5 years in Kailahun, Sierra Leone.
OBJECTIVE: In 2004, Sierra Leone adopted artesunate plus amodiaquine as first-line antimalarial treatment. We evaluated the efficacy of this combination in Kailahun, where a previous study had shown 70.2% efficacy of amodiaquine in monotherapy. METHODS: Method and outcome classification of the study complied with WHO guidelines. Children 6-59 months with uncomplicated malaria were followed-up for 28 days. PCR genotyping was used to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection. Reinfections were reclassified as cured. RESULTS: Of 172 children who were referred to the study clinic, 126 satisfied inclusion criteria and were enrolled. No early treatment failures were reported. The day 14, efficacy was 98.2% (95% CI: 93.8-99.8). Of 65 recurrent parasitaemias analysed by PCR, 17 were recrudescences. The PCR-adjusted day 28 efficacy was 84.5% (95% CI: 76.4-90.7). All true failures occurred in the last 8 days of follow-up. Of 110 children who completed the 28-day follow-up, 54 (49.1%) experienced a novel infection. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of this combination was disappointing. The high reinfection rate suggested little prophylactic effect. In Kailahun a more efficacious combination might be necessary in the future. The efficacy of AS + AQ needs to be monitored in Kailahun and in the other regions of Sierra Leone
Computing Aggregate Properties of Preimages for 2D Cellular Automata
Computing properties of the set of precursors of a given configuration is a
common problem underlying many important questions about cellular automata.
Unfortunately, such computations quickly become intractable in dimension
greater than one. This paper presents an algorithm --- incremental aggregation
--- that can compute aggregate properties of the set of precursors
exponentially faster than na{\"i}ve approaches. The incremental aggregation
algorithm is demonstrated on two problems from the two-dimensional binary Game
of Life cellular automaton: precursor count distributions and higher-order mean
field theory coefficients. In both cases, incremental aggregation allows us to
obtain new results that were previously beyond reach
