Properties of holographic dark energy at the Hubble length
We consider holographic cosmological models of dark energy in which the
infrared cutoff is set by the Hubble's radius. We show that any interacting
dark energy model, regardless of its detailed form, can be recast as a non
interacting model in which the holographic parameter evolves slowly
with time. Two specific cases are analyzed. We constrain the parameters of both
models with observational data, and show that they can be told apart at the
perturbative level.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. Contribution to the Proceedings ERE201
Block to granular-like transition in dense bubble flows
We have experimentally investigated 2-dimensional dense bubble flows
underneath inclined planes. Velocity profiles and velocity fluctuations have
been measured. A broad second-order phase transition between two dynamical
regimes is observed as a function of the tilt angle . For low
values, a block motion is observed. For high values, the velocity
profile becomes curved and a shear velocity gradient appears in the flow.Comment: Europhys. Lett. (2003) in pres
A Lightweight Regression Method to Infer Psycholinguistic Properties for Brazilian Portuguese
Psycholinguistic properties of words have been used in various approaches to
Natural Language Processing tasks, such as text simplification and readability
assessment. Most of these properties are subjective, involving costly and
time-consuming surveys to be gathered. Recent approaches use the limited
datasets of psycholinguistic properties to extend them automatically to large
lexicons. However, some of the resources used by such approaches are not
available to most languages. This study presents a method to infer
psycholinguistic properties for Brazilian Portuguese (BP) using regressors
built with a light set of features usually available for less resourced
languages: word length, frequency lists, lexical databases composed of school
dictionaries and word embedding models. The correlations between the properties
inferred are close to those obtained by related works. The resulting resource
contains 26,874 words in BP annotated with concreteness, age of acquisition,
imageability and subjective frequency.Comment: Paper accepted for TSD201
Subdiffusive axial transport of granular materials in a long drum mixer
Granular mixtures rapidly segregate radially by size when tumbled in a
partially filled horizontal drum. The smaller component moves toward the axis
of rotation and forms a buried core, which then splits into axial bands. Models
have generally assumed that the axial segregation is opposed by diffusion.
Using narrow pulses of the smaller component as initial conditions, we have
characterized axial transport in the core. We find that the axial advance of
the segregated core is well described by a self-similar concentration profile
whose width scales as , with . Thus, the
process is subdiffusive rather than diffusive as previously assumed. We find
that is nearly independent of the grain type and drum rotation rate
within the smoothly streaming regime. We compare our results to two
one-dimensional PDE models which contain self-similarity and subdiffusion; a
linear fractional diffusion model and the nonlinear porous medium equation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Phys Rev Lett. For more

Explicit modelling of SOA formation from α-pinene photooxidation: sensitivity to vapour pressure estimation
The sensitivity of the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) to the estimated vapour pressures of the condensable oxidation products is explored. A highly detailed reaction scheme was generated for α-pinene photooxidation using the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A). Vapour pressures (P^(vap)) were estimated with three
commonly used structure activity relationships. The values of P^(vap) were compared for the set of secondary species generated by GECKO-A to describe α-pinene oxidation. Discrepancies in the predicted vapour pressures were found to increase with the number of functional groups borne by the species. For semi-volatile organic compounds (i.e. organic species of interest for SOA formation), differences in the predicted Pvap range between a factor of 5 to 200 on average. The simulated SOA concentrations were compared to SOA observations in the Caltech chamber during three experiments performed under a range of NO_x conditions. While the model captures the qualitative features of SOA formation for the chamber experiments, SOA concentrations are systematically overestimated. For the conditions simulated, the modelled SOA speciation appears to be rather insensitive to the P^vap estimation method
Wall effects on granular heap stability
We investigate the effects of lateral walls on the angle of movement and on
the angle of repose of a granular pile. Our experimental results for beads
immersed in water are similar to previous results obtained in air and to recent
numerical simulations. All of these results, showing an increase of pile angles
with a decreasing gap width, are explained by a model based on the redirection
of stresses through the granular media. Two regimes are observed depending on
the bead diameter. For large beads, the range of wall effects corresponds to a
constant number of beads whereas it corresponds to a constant characteristic
length for small beads as they aggregate via van der Waals forces
Interstitial gas and density-segregation in vertically-vibrated granular media
We report experimental studies of the effect of interstitial gas on
mass-density-segregation in a vertically-vibrated mixture of equal-sized bronze
and glass spheres. Sufficiently strong vibration in the presence of
interstitial gas induces vertical segregation into sharply separated bronze and
glass layers. We find that the segregated steady state (i.e., bronze or glass
layer on top) is a sensitive function of gas pressure and viscosity, as well as
vibration frequency and amplitude. In particular, we identify distinct regimes
of behavior that characterize the change from bronze-on-top to glass-on-top
steady-state.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRL; accepted in PRE as rapid

Diffusive transport of light in two-dimensional granular materials
We study photon diffusion in a two-dimensional random packing of monodisperse
disks as a simple model of granular material. We apply ray optics approximation
to set up a persistent random walk for the photons. We employ Fresnel's
intensity reflectance with its rich dependence on the incidence angle and
polarization state of the light. We present an analytic expression for the
transport-mean-free path in terms of the refractive indices of grains and host
medium, grain radius, and packing fraction. We perform numerical simulations to
examine our analytical result.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Anomalous single production of the fourth generation charged leptons at future ep colliders
Possible single productions of the fourth standard model family charged
leptons via anomalous interactions at the future ep colliders are studied.
Signatures of such anomalous processes and backgrounds are discussed in detail.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Low-speed impact craters in loose granular media
We report on craters formed by balls dropped into dry, non-cohesive, granular
media. By explicit variation of ball density , diameter , and
drop height , the crater diameter is confirmed to scale as the 1/4 power of
the energy of the ball at impact:
. Against expectation, a different
scaling law is discovered for the crater depth:
. The scaling with properties of
the medium is also established. The crater depth has significance for granular
mechanics in that it relates to the stopping force on the ball.Comment: experiment; 4 pages, 3 figure
