Prepared for decision-makers in South Asia by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), this publication is an important guide to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere. It outlines crucial current climate change trends pertaining to specific countries and geographic regions. It advocates for resilience and urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit damage to the Earth’s oceans and frozen lands (the cryosphere). The most effective solutions will come from integrating knowledge across Indigenous and local knowledge systems and science; and across natural and physical sciences and the humanities.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

IPCC’s special report on climate change and land : what’s in it for South Asia?

A range of policies and practices have been identified which can help people adapt to climate change, mitigate against further climate change, combat land degradation and desertification, and improve food security. This publication offers a guide to the IPCC’s “Special Report on Climate Change and Land” and distills the richest material available on South Asia from the 1,300 pages of the Special Report. It provides information for knowledge sharing, and material suitable for training at various levels, with evidence-based research to back up climate change policy. Integrated governance across sectors and scales is needed to manage the pressure on land and water resources.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

IPCC’s special report on climate change and land : what’s in it for Latin America?

This publication offers a guide to the IPCC’s “Special Report on Climate Change and Land” prepared for decision makers in Latin America. Latin America-specific data, trends and analysis have been extracted directly from the Special Report for this guide. Supplementary material from recently published research is included to extend and explain points made in the IPCC’s Special Report. Community and policy responses can combat land degradation. Improved management of land, value chains and climate risks can deliver climate adaptation, mitigation and development. Insecure property rights and lack of access to credit and agricultural extension services hamper progress, especially of women.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

IPCC’s special report on the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate : what’s in it for Africa?

This detailed and beautiful publication offers a guide to the IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Land, prepared for decision-makers in Africa. Desertification processes are increasing, driving losses in agricultural productivity and incomes in drylands. The report examines the interconnectedness of land policies and their implications for climate change. For instance, if irrigation were to decrease in India, it would result in lower rainfall in Eastern Africa. A range of policies and practices has been identified which can help people adapt to climate change, mitigate against further climate change, combat land degradation and desertifi¬cation, and improve food security.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

The IPCC’s “Summary for Policy Makers” focuses on global issues and trends. This in-depth report distils from it the richest material available on Latin America. Extreme weather events can create cascading impacts on people and the environment. Coastal ecosystems such as sea grasses and mangroves are affected by ocean warming including acidification, loss of oxygen, salinity intrusion and sea level rise. Changes underway in glacier-fed rivers cannot be reversed. Protecting and restoring what is called coastal ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrass meadows can help mitigate climate change by locking up carbon. Types of adaptation actions include wetland conservation and restoration, and hard coastal protection and managed realignment.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherland

Fostering peri-urban resilience : gender-responsive approaches in northern India

Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG) has been working with local people, mostly farmers on small and marginal plots, to address climatic changes and to empower women in a more climate-compatible form of development. GEAG aims to strengthen understanding of the crucial role of urban and peri-urban ecosystems among professionals engaged in policy, resource allocation, urban planning and on-the-ground implementation of development activities. The existing roles of women as stewards of natural resources are part of the project. Gorakhpur is in Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s poorest states.Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Netherland
