Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural renewable and biodegradable polymer and mostly synthesized from the bacteria genus, Acetobacter. More recent studies on effective biopolymer in various applications have been conducted due to its uniform structure and morphology superior to those of plant cellulose. In this study, the researchers have observed the effectiveness on antimicrobial activity of BC produced by sweet glutinous rice as a raw material instead of cellulosic materials. In the process, sweet glutinous rice fermented by Loog-pang was fermented for alcohol before further making rice vinegar product by inoculating with Gluconacetobacter xylinum TISTR 086, or mixed with indigenous vinegar producers, isolated Acetobacter spp. from our laboratory. Both these two samples gave comparable BC yields and the antimicrobial activity after impregnating with silver nanoparticles and also comparable to the control coconut vinegar medium (2.20 vs 2.00 g/L within 3 days). The optimum conditions for high BC production were pH 4 to 7, temperature approximately 25-30°C, slow agitation (50 to 90 rpm) as well as static cultivation. The remarkable antimicrobial activities of silver nanoparticles impregnated BC products (Ag-BC) showed high tentative in vitro inhibition on common pathogens in contaminated wounds; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by agar diffusion test. From this study, Ag-BC produced by fermented sweet glutinous rice (FSR) will therefore be one attractive affordable choice for being biomaterials applied in medical interests, especially skin disinfectant

According to this issue, the real-time observation and together with the knowledge base of mechanical properties should be essentially helpful in detection of these defect observations. The objective of this work was established to study the mechanical stress-strain properties of rice kernels via our in-house pneumatic system design. We found that stress-strain of RD6, RD15, Phitsanulok 2 and Khao Dawk Mali 105 were greater than Khao'Yipun DOAI with moisture content of 20% w.b. These results tentatively indicated the mechanical stress-strains occurred were from the difference of rice shapes. Moreover, we could recognize that the characteristics of these various shapes significantly followed the scaling law of the relation between strain and time. We also found that the breaking force was different value for rice varieties. This parameter obtained can be such a high potential approach that can be used for further developing in the quantitative classification of rice varieties.Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakho

This paper presents a study of the water requirement, compressive strength, flexural strength, normal consistency, setting time, and air content of plastering material containing classified fly ash (FA) and ground rice husk ash (RHA). Fine fly ash and fine rice husk ash have a high potential to be used as a good pozzolanic material. The use of finer pozzolan results in a stronger and denser mortar which is due to better Q!spersion and filling effect as well as an increase in the pozzolanic reaction. Fine fly ash and fine rice husk ash can be incorporated into mortar as replacement of the mortar mix cement for the plastering. Mortar mix cement containing 20% fine fly ash and fine rice husk ash can be used to make plastering materials.Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakho

ABSTRACT Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), transparent thermoplastic materials similar to glass, was applied in several wide-ranging applications such as cell phone display screens, transparent windows and signboards. However, they are soft and easily appeared poorly transparent properties when getting scratches on their surfaces of applications under dry and wet conditions. Therefore, in this research, the features of PMMA materials after scratch damage was studied by diamond scratch tester under various loads at different environments. The optical microscope was thus applied to investigate the morphology of scratch track on the materials. In addition, the scratch resistance was analyzed by the scratch tester. From the results, the scratch depth was increased with an increasing load in both conditions as well as with the higher stress concentration. The scratch hardness, specific scratch wear rate and scratch coefficient of friction related with the applied load that it affected elastic and plastic deformation state

After cellulosic material degradation, the products mainly were sugar moiety being the starting materials for further alcohol fermentation and/or possibly being used in cultivation of common microorganisms. In the study, when different 49 bacterial isolates were tested for their cellulase activity on Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), two bacteria, Bacillus spp. CE08 and 49 were selected due to high cellulase activity and thus tested for the physical and chemical properties. Their 16S rDNA sequence comparisons were close to Bacillus sp. isolate obtained from the soil. Both isolates are common aerobic/facultative aerobic bacteria with the length of 1-3 Ξm, Gram positive, and preferring the fermentation of maltose and xylose to glucose while minimal degradation on sucrose and lactose contents. Their optimum digestibility was at 40°C, pH 4.5 for the broth having unpurified extracellular cellulase activity at 3-4 Ξg /mg. The enzyme could use the substrateCMC the best, but rice straw more slowly but better than grass. However, the enzyme displayed the least digestion effectiveness on cotton. Both of these isolates are expectedly applied in the biological degradation process substituting chemicals that cause pollution problems to the environment. Additionally, this is one promise way to bring value of agricultural waste to the community.Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakho
