Constantius III, Galla Placidia, and Libanius the Magician: Olympiodorus of Thebes and the Reconstruction of Imperial Politics in Ravenna in 421

In Fragmentum 36, the ninth-century Photius, patriarch of Constantinople, summarises Olympiodorus of Thebes teratological story about Libanius the magician and the contradictory responses to his presence in Ravenna by Constantius III and his wife, Galla Placidia. The story of the dispute between the couple and of Galla Placidiaā€™s success in having Libanius put to death is to be believed, in the light of what else we can reconstruct about how this married couple operated in other situations. Although R.C. Blockley assessed this story in terms of Olympiodorusā€™ interest in paganism and magic, it will be argued here that it is best seen in terms of the poet-historianā€™s hostility to Constantiusā€”something Blockley noted but did not explain. That hostility is to be understood as flowing from Olympiodorusā€™ aim of providing an encomium for Theodosius II in Constantinople, who was ill-disposed towards Constantius, parallel as it were with the efforts of Claudian for Stilicho, detailed a generation ago by Alan Cameron

New insights into ancestry and health of Polynesians and New Zealand Māori

    Get PDF
We are now moving towards the new era of personalised medicine. In prospect, a DNA-tailored healthcare system will utilise genomic information from patients and populations for the prevention and treatment of diseases. This near-future medicine recognises that there is already evidence of genetic disparity between people of different ethnicity. Our own previous genetic surveys of human genomes have demonstrated abundant genetic variation in New Zealanders. These now include extensive new work on immune system genes. We have produced a comprehensive reference set of genotypes for clinically relevant antigens in transplantation (human leukocyte antigen, major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene A and killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor) and transfusion (blood group and human platelet antigens) medicine in Māori and Polynesians. This report sets these data in context and highlights allelic variations and their implications for ancestry and health. It is hoped that this information may help to resolve some of the present inequalities in Māori and Pacific health status

The Role of Maternal Obesity and Consumption of a Western-style Diet on Offspring Brain Development and Behavior via an Inflammatory Mechanism

    Get PDF
Currently almost 1 in every 3 women of childbearing age in the US are classified as obese. Consumption of a diet high in fats and sugars, such as the average American diet, is one of the largest predictors of increased levels of adiposity in an individual. Further, obesity is characterized in part by a low-grade chronic inflammatory state in peripheral circulation. Maternal obesity is a known risk factor for lasting impacts on neurobehavioral development in offspring. We therefore hypothesized that maternal consumption of a Western-Style diet and obesity-induced inflammation disrupts neurodevelopment of the serotonin system in the amygdala, increasing anxiety behaviors in non-human primate offspring. Indeed, our analyses suggest that maternal adiposity levels were associated with decreased offspring serotonin innervation in the amygdala which were associated with increased anxiety behaviors. Further, the number TPH2+ cells in the raphe nuclei, the site of serotonergic neuron cell bodies, were reduced in maternal WSD offspring. These finding suggested that maternal WSD and adiposity were associated with increased anxiety behavior in offspring through disrupting the development of the central serotonergic system during perinatal development.Further examinations of the mechanisms by which maternal WSD and obesity influence offspring neurobehavioral development suggest that obesity-induced inflammation is driving the observed perturbations in the serotonergic system. As the primary immune cell of the central nervous system, microglia play an integral role throughout perinatal neurodevelopment. Quantifying microglial number and morphology in the offspring amygdala suggested that maternal WSD and adiposity levels influenced microglia function throughout both pre and postnatal development. Specifically, maternal WSD appeared to elicit persistent effects on offspring microglia number while levels of adiposity appeared to have a more transient effect in prenatal development. These findings suggest that maternal WSD and obesity may elicit their effects on offspring neurobehavioral development through modulation of microglia during perinatal development. Thermal profiles within the channel of planar gunn diodes using micro-particle sensors

    Get PDF
The paper describes the use of a novel microparticle sensor (~3 Ī¼m diameter) and infra-red (IR) microscopy to measure the temperature profile within the active channel (typically 3 Ī¼m length and 120 Ī¼m width) of planar Gunn diodes. The method has enabled detailed temperature measurements showing an asymmetrical temperature profile along the active width of these devices. The asymmetrical temperature profile suggests a similar behaviour in the channel current density, which may contribute to the lower than expected RF output power

Epistolary sleight of hand : diplomatic manipulation in Zosimus' letter to Patroclus of Arles (Quid de Proculi)

    Get PDF
Zosimusā€™ Epistula 7 (JK 333 = J3 739, Quid de Proculi) to Patroclus, bishop of Arles, would suggest the normal operations of ecclesiastical judicial procedures: Proclus had been condemned, the validity of an earlier synodal decision had been overturned, and Patroclusā€™ own authority had been upheld. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Other letters in Liber auctoritatem ecclesiae Arelatensis, particularly three written by Zosimus also in September 417, inform us about just how controversial were not only Patroclusā€™ claims to authority in southern Gaul but Zosimusā€™ support of Patroclus and his assertion that the Roman church had a role in arbitrating these claims. The evidence in the collection is of a dispute conducted with anything but diplomacy. This paper sets Quid de Proculi in its broader context to reveal how both Zosimus and the church of Arles tried, unwittingly or not, to promote a false memory about the church of Arles.https://brill.com/view/journals/vc/vc-overview.xml2021-05-23hj2019Ancient Language
