Plan B?: Reconsidering Australian Security in the event of a post US alliance era
The rise of China combined with a growing “America First” approach to US foreign policy has generated a debate in Australia about the status of the alliance with the United States. This article contributes to this debate by exploring what a Plan B, for Australian security outside the alliance, might look like. It assesses existing scholarship on the subject, highlighting how recent arguments that Australia can “go it alone” are fundamentally flawed as they fail to address requirements to protect the economic and human security of Australians. The article goes on to examine why it is still necessary to consider a Plan B, and what Australia’s core national interests are. It emphasises the importance of protecting the lives and livelihoods of Australians, as opposed to the pure focus on the territorial defence of Australia that has marked out much of the existing literature. This leads the article to conclude that, outside the US alliance, Australia would need to rely on a more holistic concept of security, and less on a military approach. It concludes by putting forward suggestions for how Australia could provide itself with security outside the US alliance, primarily through building resilience and adopting a form of neutrality
Australianised military off-the-shelf: Australia's naval ship design ethos and the Anzac Class frigates
Australia adopts an Australianised Military Off-the-Shelf approach to naval ship design. It does so in order to reduce risk and cost whilst also delivering appropriate vessels for the Royal Australian Navy and maintaining sovereign capability. This article examines Australia's approach to naval ship design, outlining its strengths and weaknesses before using the case study of the Anzac Class frigates to consider the criteria for the successful application of this approach
Small Mobile Pieces of National Sovereignty?—Uncrewed Vessels, Naval Diplomacy, and the Challenge of Signaling
Naval employment of uncrewed platforms is expanding, but their status and perception among both operators and adversaries are still evolving, with key differences from crewed platforms that affect diplomacy, political signaling, and conflict escalation
The determinants of corporate risk management
Bibliography: leaves 123-128.Traditional financial theory which is based on the Modigliani-Miller indifference paradigm, suggests that a firm's financial policies, of which risk management is one component, are irrelevant. However, this conclusion is seemingly contradicted by the observation of widespread use of derivatives by companies, particularly for hedging purposes. This apparent conflict is receiving attention from international financial researchers. A number of hypothesis have been proposed to explain corporate risk management. To evaluate the strength of these theories, this paper begins with a formalised process of identifying the assumptions underlying the hypotheses. The theories are classified according to which assumptions are relaxed. A limited number of international empirical studies have been performed to date. The results have been varied; four of the important studies are discussed. For the first time, an empirical investigation into the determinants of corporate risk management in South Africa is conducted. The most significant findings are that larger firms are more inclined to undertake risk management, and the likelihood of a firm hedging increases with the size of the director's ownership in the company
Rebuilding the Mills of Sea Power: Interwar British Planning for Economic Warfare against Japan
Throughout the interwar period the British government viewed economic warfare as one of its most important strategic weapons, particularly in the event of war with Japan. This article explores the detailed steps taken to ensure that Britain would be able to deploy economic warfare tools in any future conflict. In doing so it reveals how a defence organisation with detailed practical knowledge of economic warfare planned to convert global naval power into meaningful strategic effect in the face of a major regional adversary

Do Archive Catalogues Make History?: Exploring Interactions between Historians and Archives
Archival research is foundational to the writing of most works of academic history and is a central part of the professional identity of historians. Despite this, we know very little about what historians do in archives, and how it shapes the process of writing history. This article uses quantitative data from The National Archives of the UK to analyse one part of this puzzle, namely how historians choose what to look at in an archive. It explores the nature of archive catalogues, and their relationship to the collections they describe. It goes on to assess how catalogues shape what historians choose to view when they visit an archive, and concludes by looking more widely at historians’ information seeking practices. Through this analysis the article will argue that external factors have a far greater impact on archival research, and through it the writing of history, than is traditionally acknowledged, and as such historians need to pay considerably more attention to the ways in which their access to archives is shaped by these factors
O desejo de saber no envelhecimento como uma forma especial de sublimação
The concept of sublimation runs through the entire Freudian work, taking on different contours. Its construction is an example of a theoretical practice that is always unfinished and renewed, which demanded from Freud the transformation of the forms of partial satisfaction of drives both in relation to their goals and to their objects, always in a singular way, by a given subject in culture. It is thus a psychoanalytic concept of great value not only for psychoanalysis but also for Medicine and Public Health, with whom we are in dialogue at the moment. We consider that it can contribute to the clarification of the psychic bases of active and healthy aging, so rightly valued by health institutions that are concerned with the better being of an increasingly long-lived global society. This is the case of Universidade Aberta da Terceira Idade – UnATI/UERJ (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro), where we are conducting in 2022 a course on psychoanalysis as transformative knowledge at any age, for lay people, over 60 years old, unprecedented in this regular fortnightly format.
