    Localized moving breathers in a 2-D hexagonal lattice

    We show for the first time that highly localized in-plane breathers can propagate in specific directions with minimal lateral spreading in a model 2-D hexagonal non-linear lattice. The lattice is subject to an on-site potential in addition to longitudinal nonlinear inter-particle interactions. This study investigates the prediction that stable breather-like solitons could be formed as a result of energetic scattering events in a given layered crystal and would propagate in atomic-chain directions in certain atomic planes. This prediction arose from a long-term study of previously unexplained dark lines in natural crystals of muscovite mica.Comment: 6 pages, 2 Figs. Submitted to PR

    Compositional analysis of the association between mortality and 24-hour movement behaviour from NHANES

    Aims:Previous prospective studies of the association between mortality and physical activity have generally not fully accounted for the interplay between movement behaviours. A compositional data modelling approach accounts for relative scale and co-dependency in time-use data across physical activity behaviours of the 24-hour day. Methods:A prospective analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2006 on N = 1468 adults (d = 135 deaths) in ages 50-79 years was undertaken using compositional Cox regression analysis. Daily time spent in sedentary behaviour, light intensity (LIPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was determined from waist-mounted accelerometer data (Actigraph 7164) and supplemented with self-reported sleep data to determine the daily time-use composition. Results:The composition of time spent in sedentary behaviour, LIPA, MVPA and sleep was associated with mortality rate after allowing for age and sex effects (p < 0.001), and remained significant when other lifestyle factors were added (p < 0.001). This was driven primarily by the preponderance of MVPA; however, significant changes are attributable to LIPA relative to sedentary behaviour and sleep, and sedentary behaviour relative to sleep. The final ratio ceased to be statistically significant after incorporating lifestyle factors. The preponderance of MVPA ceased to be statistically significant after incorporating health at outset and physical limitations on movement. Conclusions: An association is inferred between survival rate and the physical activity composition of the day. The MVPA time share is important, but time spent in LIPA relative to sedentary behaviour and sleep is also a significant factor. Increased preponderance of MVPA may have detrimental associations at higher levels of MVPA

    Resolution of Nodular Fasciitis in the Upper Arm

    AbstractNodular fasciitis is a benign fibroblastic lesion that was historically misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm. Patients present with pain and swelling of relatively brief duration. The clinical presentation is suggestive of an aggressive lesion, usually occurring in muscle fascia. Histologic features can cause it to be mistaken for sarcoma. After the diagnosis is established histologically, observation is the suggested treatment. We present the case of a patient who had a large soft-tissue tumor in the upper arm with a clinical picture indicative of sarcoma, which ultimately was diagnosed as nodular fasciitis. The patient was treated with anti-inflammatory agents and observation. Within 7 months, the mass almost completely resolved, as documented by magnetic resonance imaging

    Critical success index or F measure to validate the accuracy of administrative healthcare data identifying epilepsy in deceased adults in Scotland

    Background: Methods to undertake diagnostic accuracy studies of administrative epilepsy data are challenged bylack of a way to reliably rank case-ascertainment algorithms in order of their accuracy. This is because it isdifficult to know how to prioritise positive predictive value (PPV) and sensitivity (Sens). Large numbers of truenegative (TN) instances frequently found in epilepsy studies make it difficult to discriminate algorithm accuracyon the basis of negative predictive value (NPV) and specificity (Spec) as these become inflated (usually &gt;90%).This study demonstrates the complementary value of using weather forecasting or machine learning metricscritical success index (CSI) or F measure, respectively, as unitary metrics combining PPV and sensitivity. Wereanalyse data published in a diagnostic accuracy study of administrative epilepsy mortality data in Scotland.Method: CSI was calculated as 1/[(1/PPV) + (1/Sens) – 1]. F measure was calculated as 2.PPV.Sens/(PPV +Sens). CSI and F values range from 0 to 1, interpreted as 0 = inaccurate prediction and 1 = perfect accuracy. Thepublished algorithms were reanalysed using these and their accuracy re-ranked according to CSI in order to allowcomparison to the original rankings.Results: CSI scores were conservative (range 0.02–0.826), always less than or equal to the lower of the correspondingPPV (range 39–100%) and sensitivity (range 2–93%). F values were less conservative (range0.039–0.905), sometimes higher than either PPV or sensitivity, but were always higher than CSI. Low CSI and Fvalues occurred when there was a large difference between PPV and sensitivity, e.g. CSI was 0.02 and F was0.039 in an instance when PPV was 100% and sensitivity was 2%. Algorithms with both high PPV and sensitivityperformed best in terms of CSI and F measure, e.g. CSI was 0.826 and F was 0.905 in an instance when PPV was90% and sensitivity was 91%.Conclusion: CSI or F measure can combine PPV and sensitivity values into a convenient single metric that is easierto interpret and rank in terms of diagnostic accuracy than trying to rank diagnostic accuracy according to the twomeasures themselves. CSI or F prioritise instances where both PPV and sensitivity are high over instances wherethere are large differences between PPV and sensitivity (even if one of these is very high), allowing diagnosticaccuracy thresholds based on combined PPV and sensitivity to be determined. Therefore, CSI or F measures maybe helpful complementary metrics to report alongside PPV and sensitivity in diagnostic accuracy studies ofadministrative epilepsy data

    Approximative Analytic Study of Fermions in Magnetar's Crust; Ultra-relativistic Plane Waves, Heun and Mathieu Solutions and Beyond

    Working with a magnetic field periodic along OzOz and decaying in time, we deal with the Dirac-type equation characterizing the fermions evolving in magnetar's crust. For ultra-relativistic particles, one can employ the perturbative approach, to compute the conserved current density components. If the magnetic field is frozen and the magnetar is treated as a stationary object, the fermion's wave function is expressed in terms of the Heun's Confluent functions. Finally, we are extending some previous investigations on the linearly independent fermionic modes solutions to the Mathieu's equation and we discuss the energy spectrum and the Mathieu Characteristic Exponent.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science, 15 pages, No figure

    Models of cognition and affect in perceptions of well-being

    How do people arrive at assessments of their own life quality? A series of models was developed to provide an interpretation of the way the factors of cognition and affect operate along with evaluations of specific life concerns (domains) in the perception of well-being. Following previous research, cognition was defined operationally as a factor which accounts for the covariance among a set of assessments of life-as-a-whole after affect, as measured by Bradburn's scales, is partialled out and after allowance is made for the presence of correlated measurement errors. It was found that loadings on the cognitive factor, and hence the interpretation of this factor, changed little despite quite large changes in the models. Moreover, in all major comparisons, models that contained the cognitive factor fitted the data better than models that did not. Models that included affect as the only variable intervening between the domains and the life-as-a-whole factor led to results that were intuitively difficult to accept. In the preferred model both affect and cognition were positioned as intervening variables. In this model it was found that the domain evaluations had no direct impact on life-as-a-whole assessments — the contribution of the domains was indirect by way of their association with cognition and affect. It was hypothesised that associated with each domain was a domain-specific element of affect and a domain-specific element of cognition. The linear additive relation found by previous researchers between domain evaluations and life-as-a-whole assessments would then be explainable as a statistical result arising from the summing of the domain-specific elements of affect and cognition.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43703/1/11205_2004_Article_BF00292640.pd
