    Type IIb Kähler moduli : inflationary phenomenology

    The inflationary paradigm of standard big bang cosmology provides a mechanism to generate primordial curvature perturbations and explain the large scale homogeneity and isotropy of the observable universe. This is achieved through requiring a period of accelerated expansion during the early universe and requires a deep understanding of particle physics for its correct formulation. With the emergence of string theory as a potential description of a fundamental laws of nature provides a the natural framework in which we can construct realistic models of inflation seems plausible. A common feature of string theories is the requirement of extra dimensions and, in the absence of a complete formulation of the theory, it is necessary to dimensionally reduce the theories to give a 4d effective theory. String compactifications provide a promising approach through which this can be done. However compactifications lead to the generation of a large number of massless scalar fields (moduli) which would mediate unobserved 'fifth forces'. Methods of stabilising these fields give rise to exponentially flat potentials which provide the means of obtaining inflation quite naturally. In the introductory chapters a review of Type IIb flux compactifications gives methods to stabilise the complex structure moduli and dilaton through the use of fluxes. In order to stabilise the Kähler moduli additional non perturbative corrections to the superpotential are required. We introduce the well know class of meta stable de Sitter string vacua obtained when such corrections are included. An additional class vacua at large volume are discussed, these are found when leading order perturbative corrections to the Kähler potential are also considered. The large volume vacua are then shown to give rise to a model of inflaton using a Kähler modulus as an inflaton field. We show that there exists a large class of inflationary solutions corresponding to a constant volume V of the compactification manifold. In a second chapter on this inflationary model the existence of a basin of attraction for inflation with a constant volume is described. We also find a larger class of inflationary solutions when we evolve the axionic components of the Kähler moduli and the phenomenological aspects are discussed. We finally review the standard slow roll analysis and discuss its use in multiple field inflationary models. We introduce two multiple field extensions to the standard single field slow roll approach. We proceed with an investigation into the suitability of the multiple field slow roll approaches in predicting the slow roll footprint of Supergravity models of inflation. This is achieved through comparing the results with single field results and numerical simulation data when more complex models are considered

    Temperature-Controlled Mechanochemistry for the Nickel-Catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura-Type Coupling of Aryl Sulfamates via Ball Milling and Twin-Screw Extrusion

    The use of temperature-controlled mechanochemistry to enable the mechanochemical nickel-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is herein described. Transitioning from a capricious room-temperature protocol, through to a heated, PID-controlled programmable jar heater manifold was required to deliver an efficient method for the coupling of aryl sulfamates (derived from ubiquitous phenols) and aryl boronic acid species. Furthermore, this process is conducted using a base-metal nickel catalyst, in the absence of bulk solvent, and in the absence of air/moisture sensitive reaction set-ups. This methodology is showcased through translation to large-scale twin-screw extrusion methodology enabling 200-fold scale increase, producing decagram quantities of C-C coupled material

    Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) is Sensitive to Hippocampal and Subcortical Gray Matter Changes in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

    Although temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) results in widespread changes in MRI measures of tissue volume, diffusion and functional connectivity, changes in tissue composition in TLE have not been investigated with MRI. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is sensitive to changes in tissue composition, in particular to iron and myelin. Here, we show for the first time that QSM is sensitive to gray matter abnormalities in 31patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared to 23 healthy controls, and showed significant susceptibility changes in the hippocampus in left TLE patients, and in the bilateral thalamus in both left and right TLE

    Resective, Ablative and Radiosurgical Interventions for Drug Resistant Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Outcomes

    Objectives: One-third of individuals with focal epilepsy do not achieve seizure freedom despite best medical therapy. Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most common form of drug resistant focal epilepsy. Surgery may lead to long-term seizure remission if the epileptogenic zone can be defined and safely removed or disconnected. We compare published outcomes following open surgical techniques, radiosurgery (SRS), laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) and radiofrequency ablation (RF-TC). / Methods: PRISMA systematic review was performed through structured searches of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies of MTLE reporting seizure-free outcomes in ≥10 patients with ≥12 months follow-up. Due to variability in open surgical approaches, only comparative studies were included to minimize the risk of bias. Random effects meta-analysis was performed to calculate effects sizes and a pooled estimate of the probability of seizure freedom per person-year. A mixed effects linear regression model was performed to compare effect sizes between interventions. / Results: From 1,801 screened articles, 41 articles were included in the quantitative analysis. Open surgery included anterior temporal lobe resection as well as transcortical and trans-sylvian selective amygdalohippocampectomy. The pooled seizure-free rate per person-year was 0.72 (95% CI 0.66–0.79) with trans-sylvian selective amygdalohippocampectomy, 0.59 (95% CI 0.53–0.65) with LITT, 0.70 (95% CI 0.64–0.77) with anterior temporal lobe resection, 0.60 (95% CI 0.49–0.73) with transcortical selective amygdalohippocampectomy, 0.38 (95% CI 0.14–1.00) with RF-TC and 0.50 (95% CI 0.34–0.73) with SRS. Follow up duration and study sizes were limited with LITT and RF-TC. A mixed-effects linear regression model suggests significant differences between interventions, with LITT, ATLR and SAH demonstrating the largest effects estimates and RF-TC the lowest. / Conclusions: Overall, novel “minimally invasive” approaches are still comparatively less efficacious than open surgery. LITT shows promising seizure effectiveness, however follow-up durations are shorter for minimally invasive approaches so the durability of the outcomes cannot yet be assessed. Secondary outcome measures such as Neurological complications, neuropsychological outcome and interventional morbidity are poorly reported but are important considerations when deciding on first-line treatments

    Quantitative susceptibility mapping identifies hippocampal and other subcortical grey matter tissue composition changes in temporal lobe epilepsy

    Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with widespread brain alterations. Using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) alongside transverse relaxation rate ( ), we investigated regional brain susceptibility changes in 36 patients with left-sided (LTLE) or right-sided TLE (RTLE) secondary to hippocampal sclerosis, and 27 healthy controls (HC). We compared three susceptibility calculation methods to ensure image quality. Correlations of susceptibility and with age of epilepsy onset, frequency of focal-to-bilateral tonic–clonic seizures (FBTCS), and neuropsychological test scores were examined. Weak-harmonic QSM (WH-QSM) successfully reduced noise and removed residual background field artefacts. Significant susceptibility increases were identified in the left putamen in the RTLE group compared to the LTLE group, the right putamen and right thalamus in the RTLE group compared to HC, and a significant susceptibility decrease in the left hippocampus in LTLE versus HC. LTLE patients who underwent epilepsy surgery showed significantly lower left-versus-right hippocampal susceptibility. Significant changes were found between TLE and HC groups in the amygdala, putamen, thalamus, and in the hippocampus. Specifically, decreased R2* was found in the left and right hippocampus in LTLE and RTLE, respectively, compared to HC. Susceptibility and were significantly correlated with cognitive test scores in the hippocampus, globus pallidus, and thalamus. FBTCS frequency correlated positively with ipsilateral thalamic and contralateral putamen susceptibility and with in bilateral globi pallidi. Age of onset was correlated with susceptibility in the hippocampus and putamen, and with in the caudate. Susceptibility and changes observed in TLE groups suggest selective loss of low-myelinated neurons alongside iron redistribution in the hippocampi, predominantly ipsilaterally, indicating QSM's sensitivity to local pathology. Increased susceptibility and in the thalamus and putamen suggest increased iron content and reflect disease severity

    Occupational characteristics, occupational sex segregation, and family migration decisions

    This paper examines the effects of occupational characteristics on family migration within Britain. For the first time in the literature, we explicitly theorise and later test the impact of the sex composition of husbands' and wives' occupations on mobility decisions. The empirical analysis consists of panel regression models estimated on dyadic couple-level information from the British Household Panel Survey combined with occupational-level data from the UK Labour Force Survey. Results suggest that some occupational characteristics are significantly associated with family migration, whereas occupational sex segregation has limited impact. Although working in female-dominated occupations is related to a lower propensity to become a lead mover and a higher propensity to become a tied mover, these associations are mediated by the socio-economic and occupational characteristics of the spouses

    A Longitudinal Analysis of Moving Desires, Expectations and Actual Moving Behaviour

    Residential mobility theory proposes that moves are often preceded by the expression of moving desires and expectations. Much research has investigated how individuals form these premove thoughts, with a largely separate literature examining actual mobility. Although a growing number of studies link premove thoughts to subsequent moving behaviour, these often do not distinguish explicitly between different types and combinations of premove thoughts. Using 1998–2006 British Household Panel Survey data, this study investigates whether moving desires and expectations are empirically distinct premove thoughts. Using multinomial regression models we demonstrate that moving desires and expectations have different meanings, and are often held in combination: the factors associated with expecting to move differ depending upon whether the move is also desired (and vice versa). Next, using panel logistic regression models, we show that different desire–expectation combinations have different effects on the probability of subsequent moving behaviour.
