This exploratory research design aims to examine the integration process of United States veterans at the University of San Diego. Besides creating a more comprehensive knowledge base on the subject, the purpose of the paper is to be a resource for universities who are striving to better their veteran programs. This paper can be utilized to help make the process of integrating veteran college students more fluid. The paper examines common and emerging themes compiled from a series of qualitative interviews with the target population. This paper hopes to help create a path by continuing the conversation about the journey of veteran college students

"Why have we neglected the girls" : Women's roles in Indian Territory Choctaw education, 1831-1861

After the forceful removal of the Choctaw to Indian Territory in 1831, they quickly established schools for their children. They believed emphasizing female education simultaneously preserved Choctaw culture and encouraged the United States' continued recognition of their sovereignty. Thus, the school system became a meeting point for Choctaw, white, and Black women who supported female education efforts. These schools were not the first attempt at western-style education for the Choctaw. After attempting to utilize mission schools in their Southeastern homelands as well as the boy's Choctaw Academy in Kentucky, the Nation built a school system they controlled. Utilizing Choctaw women as teachers and administrators at many of their public schools, the high demand resulted in external support. Accommodating the influx of students, Choctaws contracted white American teachers and utilized Black enslaved labor to assist in running the schools. A system emerged where the Choctaw tended to run their Sabbath and Neighborhood Schools while whites dominated the academy boarding school system with the assistance of slave labor. Of course, the Choctaw girls who attended these schools also played important roles learning and melding Euro-American education and customs with their own in order to prepare themselves for future contact with colonial powers around them. This work balances the field in numerous ways. Indian Boarding Schools post-Civil War receive wide attention, yet there is little literature on them between the 1830s and 1860s. In addition to studying this earlier period, the work highlights the roles of Black women within schools alongside white and Choctaw women's teaching. Focusing on Choctaw agency in the future of their daughters and Nation, this work explores women's crucial roles in laying the foundations of Choctaw public education

Teaching webside manner: development and initial evaluation of a video consultation skills training module for undergraduate medical students

Background Video consultations are increasingly used to communicate with patients, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, training in video consultation skills receives scant attention in the literature. We sought to introduce this important topic to our undergraduate medical school curriculum. Objective To increase final year medical studentsā€™ video consultation skills and knowledge. Methods We used Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) quality improvement methodology with a pre-post study design to develop a teaching session for 5th year medical students, informed by a literature review and online clinician survey. The 2 hour session comprised an introduction and three practical stations: patient selection and ethics, technology and example videos, and simulation. Subjective pre- and post-session confidence was reported by students across seven domains using 5-point scales (1: not at all confident; 5: extremely confident). Students and facilitators completed post-session feedback forms. Results The 40 students and 3 facilitators who attended, over two separate teaching sessions, provided unanimously positive feedback. All students considered the session relevant. Subjective confidence ratings (nĀ =Ā 34) significantly increased from pre- to post-session (mean increase 1.78, p <Ā 0.001). Conclusions The inaugural teaching session was well-received and subjective assessment measures showed improvement in taught skills. This pilot has informed a UK-wide multi-centre study with subjective and objective data collection

Decoupling of evolutionary changes in transcription factor binding and gene expression in mammals

To understand the evolutionary dynamics between transcription factor (TF) binding and gene expression in mammals, we compared transcriptional output and the binding intensities for three tissue-specific TFs in livers from four closely related mouse species. For each transcription factor, TF-dependent genes and the TF binding sites most likely to influence mRNA expression were identified by comparing mRNA expression levels between wild-type and TF knockout mice. Independent evolution was observed genome-wide between the rate of change in TF binding and the rate of change in mRNA expression across taxa, with the exception of a small number of TF-dependent genes. We also found that binding intensities are preferentially conserved near genes whose expression is dependent on the TF, and the conservation is shared among binding peaks in close proximity to each other near the TSS. Expression of TF-dependent genes typically showed an increased sensitivity to changes in binding levels as measured by mRNA abundance. Taken together, these results highlight a significant tolerance to evolutionary changes in TF binding intensity in mammalian transcriptional networks and suggest that some TF-dependent genes may be largely regulated by a single TF across evolution
