    Multi-aperture foveated imaging

    Foveated imaging, such as that evolved by biological systems to provide high angular resolution with a reduced space–bandwidth product, also offers advantages for man-made task-specific imaging. Foveated imaging systems using exclusively optical distortion are complex, bulky, and high cost, however. We demonstrate foveated imaging using a planar array of identical cameras combined with a prism array and superresolution reconstruction of a mosaicked image with a foveal variation in angular resolution of 5.9:1 and a quadrupling of the field of view. The combination of low-cost, mass-produced cameras and optics with computational image recovery offers enhanced capability of achieving large foveal ratios from compact, low-cost imaging systems

    Multi-level port resilience planning in the UK: how can information sharing be made easier?

    Port resilience planning is a subset of the wider disaster resilience literature and it is concerned with how port stakeholders work together to make port systems more resilience. Port stakeholders include government departments, the port operator, ship operators, importers, agents and logistics firms. Ports are vital for the operation of cities and whole countries, especial island nations like the UK. Single port systems are multi-level systems with complex operational-level relationships and interdependencies. Additional levels to this include government and the policy-level. Preparing for the crises and disasters that might befall ports requires information sharing between stakeholders about key dependencies and alternative actions. The complexity of ports presents barriers to information sharing; as do commercial and political sensitivities. This paper uses a multi-level case study on the UK's system of ports to propose an approach to information sharing that uses the subjectivity of information from a supplier's perspective and from a user's perspective to reduce barriers of complexity, confidentiality and political sensitivity

    Brightest galaxies as halo centre tracers in SDSS DR7

    Determining the positions of halo centres in large-scale structure surveys is crucial for many cosmological studies. A common assumption is that halo centres correspond to the location of their brightest member galaxies. In this paper, we study the dynamics of brightest galaxies with respect to other halo members in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7. Specifically, we look at the line-of-sight velocity and spatial offsets between brightest galaxies and their neighbours. We compare those to detailed mock catalogues, constructed from high-resolution, dark-matter-only NN-body simulations, in which it is assumed that satellite galaxies trace dark matter subhaloes. This allows us to place constraints on the fraction fBNCf_{\rm BNC} of haloes in which the brightest galaxy is not the central. Compared to previous studies we explicitly take into account the unrelaxed state of the host haloes, velocity offsets of halo cores and correlations between fBNCf_{\rm BNC} and the satellite occupation. We find that fBNCf_{\rm BNC} strongly decreases with the luminosity of the brightest galaxy and increases with the mass of the host halo. Overall, in the halo mass range 1013−1014.5h−1M⊙10^{13} - 10^{14.5} h^{-1} M_\odot we find fBNC∼30%f_{\rm BNC} \sim 30\%, in good agreement with a previous study by Skibba et al. We discuss the implications of these findings for studies inferring the galaxy--halo connection from satellite kinematics, models of the conditional luminosity function and galaxy formation in general.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures.     AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE NORTH DAKOTA CATTLE INDUSTRY

    The analysis was conducted to evaluate the impacts of both the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (FAIR) and the cattle cycle on the livestock enterprises. The North Dakota Representative Farm and Ranch Model, which uses the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute price projections as an input, was developed and used for this analysis. Net farm income and farm debt-to-asset ratios for the average and large beef cattle farms were analyzed. The U.S. cattle industry has been characterized by cyclical variations in production and prices. It appears that the current cattle cycle is in the final stages of expansion. Cattle numbers continued to increase during 1995, but at a slow rate. Industry estimates are that the bottom of cattle prices will occur in late 1996 or 1997. Price recovery is projected to start sometime in 1998 as inventory numbers decline. Prices are forecast to rise through 2002. Net farm income for the representative beef cattle farms is projected to follow the cattle cycle with the lowest net incomes during 1997- 1999. Net farm income for most representative beef cattle farms recovers by 2002-2003. The debt-to-asset ratios for the representative beef cattle farms will likely rise throughout the forecast period.     Knee and Hip Angle and Moment Adaptations During Cutting Tasks in Subjects With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency Classified as Noncopers

    Study Design: Two-factor mixed-design study, with factors including group (control and noncoper) and task (sidestep, crossover, and straight). Objectives: To compare the knee and hip joint angles and moments of control subjects and subjects with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficient knee classified as noncopers, during a sidestep, crossover, and straight-ahead task. Background: Subjects with ACL deficiency primarily note difficulty with cutting tasks as opposed to straight-ahead tasks. Yet, previous studies have primarily focused on straight-ahead tasks. Methods and Measures: Fifteen subjects with ACL deficiency classified as noncopers, based on the number of giving-way episodes (1) and global question of knee function (60%), were included in this study. These subjects (10 male, 5 female; age range, 18-47 years). Position data collected at 60 Hz were combined with anthropometric and ground reaction force data collected at 420 Hz to estimate 3- dimensional knee and hip joint angles and moments. All subjects performed 3 tasks including a step and 45 degree sidestep cut, step and 45 degree crossover cut, and step and proceed straight. Two-way mixed model ANOVAs were used to compare peak angle and moment variables between 10% and 30% stance. Results: The ACL-deficient noncoper group had 1.8 degree to 5.7 degree less knee flexion angle compared to the control group across tasks (P.043). The ACL-deficient noncoper group used 22% to 27% lower knee extensor moment during weight acceptance compared to the control group (P.001). The sagittal plane hip extensor moments were 34% to 39% highter in the ACL-deficient noncoper group compared to the control group (P.025). Hip frontal (P.037) and transverse plane (P.04) moments also distinguished the ACL-deficient noncoper from the control group. Conclusions: This study suggests that individuals who do not cope well after ACL injury rely on a hip control strategy during cutting tasks
