The paper is part of the study "Specific problems of the development of the settlement network in south-eastern Romania. Regions of development 3 (South), 4 (South-West) and 8 (Bucharest-Ilfov)" elaborated during 2004 – 2006, within the AMTRANS programme funded by the Ministry of Education and Research, coordinated by INCD – URBANPROIECT in partnership with the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy and the Qualification in Statistics National Centre. The general objective of the project was sustainable and balanced spatial development of the settlement network and promotion of new relationships between urban and rural. Concretely, the study has produced a model of a polycentric and balanced settlement network according to the European principles. The case study testing and validating this model took place in southern Romania, territory exhibiting acutely the entire range of problems related to the state of the settlement network: profoundly large rural areas, accentuated dynamics of declaring new cities without sufficient evidence, excessive polarization exercised by Bucharest, etc. The paper presents the intervention directions needed to balance in the territory urban poles within the studied area, focusing on the establishment of orientation policies to consolidate the role of each settlement based on the hierarchical level of importance: European, national, regional, and local. The paper also identifies possible functional urban areas: the metropolitan area of Bucharest, areas of potential strategic integration, areas of cooperation between the small and medium-sized cities and the rural regions. Within each of these areas, the paper proposes to establish new relationships between urban and rural based on partnership, involving cooperation and coordination in achieving common goals. The study considers that the poles of development are the key element of proposed model, and their identification, formation, and balanced distribution must represent the main direction of action, orienting policies for the sustainable development of the urban system. The constant financial effort needed to implement integrated policies for a balanced development of the settlement network results into a long term improvement of living conditions in urbane and rural communities

    Humour in food advertising

    Get PDF
Humour is known to help relational outcomes. In business, business sectors (product-based vs service-based) and humour styles (constructive vs offensive) play a defining role. This study aims to identify how humour impacts the selling of food products. This study is based on studies about humour effects in business, management, marketing, and psychology. Food advertisements are analysed in an attempt to identify the ways in which humour determines consumers to buy one food product or another. Constructive humour has positive effects on business performance and work relationship quality no matter the business sector. The only limitation of the research concerns the cultural context (only Romanian advertisements are analysed). This study allows strategic insights into how to use humour in an advertising context. To the best of the author’s knowledge, no previous Romanian study has until now examined the impact of humour on the selling of food products due to advertisements

Laparoscopic versus open surgical treatment of umbilical hernia

Umbilical hernia is one of the types of ventral hernias of the abdominal wall and it represents the externalization of a part of the abdominal contents through a defect of the anterior abdominal wall located in the umbilical region. It is estimated that more than 20 million abdominal wall hernia surgeries are performed worldwide each year. The paper presents a retrospective study on the patients diagnosed with umbilical hernia and admitted to the First and Second Surgery Departments of the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital. The study includes 82 cases diagnosed with umbilical hernias over a period of 4 years, between 01.01.2017 and 31.12.2020. Open and laparoscopic surgical techniques are compared in terms of outcomes and postoperative complications. Most cases of umbilical hernia were within the age group 51-70 years, with a slightly higher incidence in males. Arterial hypertension and obesity were the most frequent comorbidities. The alloplastic, classic or laparoscopic procedure became the most widely used due to benefits such as: rapid socio-professional reintegration, short-term hospitalization and low incidence of relapses and postoperative complications. The current trend is for the IPOM laparoscopic procedure to become the gold standard in the treatment of umbilical hernias

Biblical descriptions of spinal neurological and neurosurgical pathology

    Get PDF
The Holy Bible includes descriptions of the spine with both neurosurgical and neurological implications and most spinal disorders presented have been briefly described and display a mystical nature. The Holy Bible is a book full of sacred precepts and not a medical encyclopedia as it was written in the context of that age, and in a language that had to be understood by people of that era. This paper aims to give a short presentation of several diseases of the spine mentioned in the Holy Scripture in order to identify the most common disease among the Jews during biblical times and attempts to provide their diagnosis

Spinal schwannomatosis of the cauda equina in the absence of neurofibromatosis: Case report and treatment strategies

    Get PDF
Schwannomatosis is a rare tumor syndrome characterized by the presence of multiple benign non-vestibular, non-intradermal schwannomas and by the absence of neurofibromatosis type 1 or 2 syndromes. Multiple schwannomas are clinically and genetically distinct from neurofibromatosis, and the main treatment in case of symptomatic lesions is represented by surgical resection. In case of asymptomatic lesions, the indicated treatment is neuroimaging follow-up (MRI). We are presenting the case of a patient with three schwannomas of the cauda equina, as well as the treatment strategy in the case of this rare pathology
